OMG, this is amazing. I LOVE hearing the origins and players of Melf and Mordenkainen!! Always waonered if the rumors behind Tasha's Player are corrent!
Who's Bigby? Who's Tensar? Who's Evard?! Who are all the Name Spells Namesakes IRL???!!!
Tasha was never a character, it was based off a letter someone wrote to TSR, Tensar was an anagram of Ernest, who was Luke's older brother, Bigby was an NPC who was Mordenkain's Henchman after he was charmed.
Drawmij was Jim Ward's character; try and guess how he came up with the name. Leomund was created and played by Lenard Lakofka, and Rary was the PC of Brian Blume.

Luke, hopefully someday my kids look back on their characters in my games just as fondly! I was fortunate enough to meet your dad a few times many years ago on the convention circuit. The world owes him a debt we can never repay. Rest in Peace Dungeon Master!
My brother and I got to play a game of Car Wars with Luke at gencon one year. He’s a great guy. I never got to thank his father for creating the hobby that has bound my friend group together for 3 decades but I did get to tell Luke how much I appreciated his fathers work.
I truly hope we see Greyhawk released for 5e.
I don't know much about Greyhawk, honestly, but I'd really like to see it, myself. Tasha and Mordenkainen both sound really fun.
I do too; I just don't know how they'd do it with political nitpicks going around. While rare in the Forgotten Realms, the idea of a Good Orc or Drow is pretty much unheard of in Greyhawk. Mordenkainen himself, in his Tome of Foes, made it pretty clear that he believes no Drow should ever be trusted.

Nice job! As a Finn, learning about the connection between Mordenkainen and our Väinämöinen was surprising, but oddly satisfying
Although Vainamoinen was very wizard-like, doesn't the name Mordenkainen more closely resemble Lemminkainen?
@@kedabro1957 Hard to say, hadn't thought about that before. Both names end in -nen, common to heroes in our national epic Kalevala. Haven't read it due to its heavily poetic and archaic style, but it holds a similar as Beowulf in English literature.
-nen itself is a diminutive form of the nouns that make part of the names, but the nouns themselves don't make any sense since they are some ancient words that aren't in contemporary use. Anyway, plenty of surnames these days end in -nen, maybe also inspired by Väinämöinen, Lemminkäinen, etc.
Fun fact: Lorewise, Lemminkäinen was more of a bard who tried to seduce all the females and ruined a mythical heist with his bad singing (no, not making this up :D)

Yeah, I always assumed they claimed Vainamoinen as the source because the character of Lemminkainen wasn't wizardlike at all.
@@kedabro1957 you got it right all along! I had a look at his wiki page, and it turns out that Mordenkainen is Mordecai & Lemminkäinen combined. It also says his background mentor was "Old Waino" and Wäinö is short for Mr. V.

Ask him what Melf’s real name is next time! Haha, apparently Artifact of Evil says it’s “a simple name, as good as any...”, but somehow I imagine something like Gary asking Luc what his elf character’s name was and being told, “uh...mmm-elf?” “Melf??” “Yeah” “...okay.” Ha

A lot of us know Gary had Mordenkainen as his PC, remind me who Dave Arneson famous PCs were.
I believe Arneson was already out of TSR by the time these "iconic player characters" started becoming published / public knowledge / the norm. Not to mention he was more known for being a DM than player.

I thought Mordenkainen was named after Mordecai, from the Book of Esther in the Bible, and Lemminkäinen, another Finnish mythology character.
Lemminkainen certainly is a closer match.

Well, the Grandmaster usually intends for there to be a winner, while Mordenkainen is trying to prevent there from being one.
I can't believe origin of his name is literally "Male Elf"
