    I have the G9 II and OM-1. For travel, I’d take the OM-1 - it’s smaller, lighter and has better
    battery life. My thing is bird photography. I find OM-1 has better AF for birds in flight, but the G9 II has an uncanny ability to focus on partially hidden perched birds. Compared to the OM-1, the G9 II is very slow to start up, which can be frustrating at key moments. The low light, JPEGs from the G9 II are cleaner and retain more detail than those from the OM-1. Indoors the G9 II’s handheld high resolution mode is less reliable than that of the OM-1. The former’s capture rate slows a lot, increasing camera shake. Size and weight aside, I prefer the ergonomics on the G9 II - but miss the OM-1’s function switch. I use it the flick instantly between all points AF and single point AF area for birds in flight/perched birds respectively.

      I think some of the benefit of the G9 ii in low light is extra pixels somehow seem to smooth out noise. It's counterintuitive. More pixels do seem to help in this way. It also might have to do with the jpeg engine, however it processes them. I find it kind of hard to know with the OM-1. Sometimes it does great in low light. Others, not so much. I do like the function switch and use it to switch between SAF and CAF. I'll use back button focus at times, so I didn't assign that a similar function. I have the function button on the level set to turn subject detection on and off. It's nice how many options there are.

    • @mikestewart6669
      @mikestewart6669 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonathanscherer8567 I use the two front buttons, one for subject detection, and the other for human eye detection. I think you right about the jpeg engine. At the moment I can’t compare how well the noise cleans up as my software doesn’t yet support G9 II RAW. The OM-1 files clean up really well.

    Welcome to our land again, Emily! You have an amazing life! When I see the G9II in your hands it dispels some of the fears I had about handling and size. Yeah, it's big-ish compared but with the stabe and the small-ish lenses I may have to look at changing it up for my events and travel / wildlife photography. My hesitation though is I do NOT shoot video. I am worried this will be overkill for me. If you were strictly a stills shooter, would you still be shooting with it? If not, what other M43?

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ooooo even if it shot zero video it would still be the best stills m43 camera by far!! No problems there 😁 the issue is.... should lumix ever bring out a stripped down version, with all the photo and none of the video, perhaps in a smaller form factor... it would tick all your needs and likely be miles cheaper!!! I have absolutely no idea if that would ever emerge, mind, but that would tick a lot of my boxes too... so I live in hope 😂 otherwise... yes if you can get over the size, the g9ii is the gem of the system so far!

    Emily, thank you for your great channel! I have just started my photography journey, mostly to chronicle my new grandson and take pictures on my motorcycle rides. I decided on M4/3 due mostly to size and being able to carry a kit in a saddlebag. Your channel is a great resource, along with others, and helped me make my decision. I went with an Olympus M10 Mk IV for my first body, but at some point will add a Lumix as a second body. The first ever Lumix Collective? How (insert expletive of preference) cool is that! I recently put a lot of my savings pots into my own collective and got hold of a G9ii. I'm not going to lie, it's a huge learning curve from my trusty GX9 and FZ2000 (I'm not getting rid of either - the FZ2000 has built-in ND Filters!) and I'm going to have to study LUTS a little bit more before I feel confident enough to be able to use them well. @@PacisJusticia because I use the GH5 for video mainly I have the Olympus 12-40 pro pretty much permanently stuck on it. It produces excellent results and has a pretty small CFD. However, I do have all the pancakes made by both Oly and Panny (12, 14, 17.5, 20, 45) as I have other m43 cameras. I prefer primes for photography. Now I ask these questions here as well as I realised just now that my question was added to an older video...
    :)
    how would you compare now in 2024 the G9 ll with the GH5S?
    I am asking because I found a GH5S for about 1100 euro locally in my city, while the G9 ll of course is about 1000 euro more...
    Is it still more valuable to get the GH5 S and a good rig set up and tripod for that extra 1000 euro than to accept the future of Phasedetect and greater continuous autofocus is here and one should then clearly choose the G9 ll in 2024 if one wants to make money on one's videos?
    I want to both do short documentaries as well as start doing short plays, short one-person acting films, like 10-15 min monologues at home or in certain outside environments with natural light, like finding interesting plays, creating a character and setting up a scene with stage blocking so I can walk from one object to another in front of the camera and talk on some kind of wireless mic and record it on the camera to have less gear to worry about and so focus more on the directing of myself and the acting...
    But will the Gh5S be great enough and still a better value for me when I am not yet making money off my equipment? Not saying I should not start making money off my skills, I want to..
    Just trying to understand if is better to be using a five-year-old camera or getting on the horse of these new cameras now...
    Some people say, save the money for the GH7...
    I am not really sure where to put my money as I have not used these cameras, I got an old GH3 and three very good lenses from 2013... And I feel is time to make an upgrade and start doing more professional work...
    Sorry, for the long rant face-blue-smiling
    and really appreciate it if you could get back when possible!
    thanks, Chris

    My issue with the C1 C2 C3 spots on the dial are that they need the ability to be named with a bit of text that's shown on the screen when turning the dial to select them. I rarely use them because I either forget I set them, or I forget what I set them to. A bit of text on screen would solve that, making the custom settings so much more useful.

    Thanks--I'm waiting until DxO creates profiles for the G9II before getting one but the G9 "I" of course also has pre-burst up to 20 fps but I've managed to get some great hummingbird shots with "regular" burst mode (and even single-shot) but it's a great feature. As impressive as 60 fps is, even 20 fps can easily produce way more images than I care to sort through! What lens did you use? They're so skittish around here that I need the long end of the Leica 100-400.
    Personally, I shoot RAW+JPG to both cards and only format them after saving the images to one external HDD, curating them, and copying the remaining images to another external HDD, which I back-up periodically to a third external HDD I keep in another location. Overkill perhaps, but better safe than sorry. I also use two 128GB cards (only V30s at this point as I don't shoot a lot of burst or video) which gives me about 3,600 images with the G9 "I"--obviously that'll decrease with the II but I think of it as 100 rolls of 35mm film--way more than I'll likely use on any trip!

    I don't see how anyone would even buy MFT cameras in 2023, when FF cameras and lenses are almost the same price and not to mention that the G9II is the same size as a FF camera too. You get better image quality and low light on FF cameras, regardless of how "improved" the G9II is. I love my GH5, but I think MFT is dying a slow death and ultimately should only be used on certain occasions for weight savings and portability such as for traveling and wildlife.
