You’re not kidding. I slowed down the solo section and still can’t figure it. Looks like octaves with added notes and some crazy fast triads and single note lines all over. How do you even come up with that? Nothing is basic linear. Everything’s about as difficult as can be including the right hand. Melody isn’t easy to sing either. But the mark of a genius, beyond any and all analysis, it’s a beautiful piece of musical art.

We are so so lucky that Elliott lived during an era when video was common & accessible....while I wish every day that he was still with us; I am glad that @ least we have so many wonderful recordings of him live - and that his estate does not try to stop us seeing them. Thank You

Me, too....it is especially easy to feel this way watching a show like this one - Elliott is in top form at this time in his life, his face and hair are bright and clean, he is totally zoned in on and ultra focused - he just goes right into picking away like that...it looks like a restaurant or similar type venue, and talk about up close and right there....I hope to have a dream about this show only I am there, and I will save you a seat, Unlucky Charm.

Danielle Marin I can see why you think that, (also it’s Amoba record’s- a historic San Fran record store) but ‘99 was a bad year for him drug wise. Prime was ‘96-‘98, in terms of his immaculate, otherworldly live performances. This is pretty good, but his voice isn’t all there. Check our the live tracks on the either/or expanded- it’s right off the board, and absolute perfection. I love the electric stuff too. But that either/or tour.... never seen anything like it since.
He was a very kind, very funny guy, and a songwriting savant. It’s unbelievable how many unreleased studio tracks universal and the estate still has locked away. “Taking a Fall.” “Stickman.” As good as any of his best.

I know my comments are late to the party. But Elliott is displaying such fabulous guitarmanship 😢 and great understanding of craft,at such a young age. A marvelous, tortured talent for sure. His story and life were mythical in its form. His songwriting was so sweetly piercing of tender places. darkly melodic and paired with a feminist take of his life experiences while combining them with inspired storytelling. He had a unique falsetto, a conscientious lack of vibrato and a strong pure artistic identity. This man is an icon.

Ahead of his time is one way to look at it, but Elliott transcended time. He's not a stepping stone in musical evolution. He like, went off on his own crazy evolutionary path. Elliott's music was insular, and will never be repeated or even faithfully mimicked. At this point, we're working AWAY from his sound of anything. His musical intuition is a total enigma, when you consider "similar artists" sound nothing like him.

Ciao

My observation, which could be totally wrong, is that Elliott Smith was a person who was uncomfortable in his own skin. And also a person that didn't enjoy performing live. Most of his albums are masterpieces, but I've rarely seen good live performances. I know people are digging this video, but I don't think he sounds particularly good here. I saw him live at the end of his life, and he was pretty terrible sadly. But he was a musical genius and I"m glad we have the music and the albums. He left an incredible catalog.

Thomas, well said. It is quite a surreal story, once I gathered the information. I am one of the weirdos who never heard or heard of this guy until very recently. A channel I regularly watch included one of his songs as a background track and my jaw dropped & I went right to the link for artist info and was incredibly excited and within an hour I learned he died in 2003. It was a weird day, bittersweet. I am still discovering his music but it is so odd, for the first time ever, to hear music, though old to his long time fans, it is new to me, and it gives me a lump in my throat.
I read so many unbelievably excellent comments from his fans in this video comment sections and I know people get it and there is nothing weird about it.
I felt so sad to know he was dead and after I felt better I relentlessly looked for whatever I could dig up and while we may never know with 100% certainty, it doesn't much matter.
The older I get, the more I realize it is true that God is not of this world, this world belongs to the Prince of Darkness, where up is down and black is white, amazing humans get murdered and their Hang man moves on, living a comfortable life with her adoring husband.

@@kitpalmer1583 You are naive, or brainwashed. You don't honestly trust ANY system in this country, let alone the Justice System/Law Enforcement? You don't really sound like a fan of Elliott's, because I can't imagine how you can so coldly allude to HER life being ruined by "reckless accusations", while she still lives and breaths and even got married, so apparently LOVE was still in the cards for her - and Elliott was snuffed out like a crappy birthday cake candle. Do the reading - YOU will come to find that while there might not be a smoking gun, there is an overabundance of factional information that can, does and will lead any person with a brain who reads it to knowing Elliott did not kill himself. The numbers don't lie.

@@Dani92670 Based on your playlists, you are a flat earther who also doesn't believe in the moon - Nazi NASA conspiracies? Ok, you're not allowed to have an opinion, let alone on Elliott's death. Lol typically it's the tinfoilers that believe in the murder theory so whole heartedly. Remember people, Danielle here is a flat earther who also firmly believes Elliott was murdered. These are the kind of fools perpetuating this theory, based off one word: inconclusive. Conspiracy theorists saw that word and ran with it from day 1, grasping at straws along the way. They don't even get the whole scope of what that means.
The fact the autopsy came back inconclusive ONLY looks at physical evidence - The coroner isn't an Elliott Smith biographer, and probably cares little about him, his life, and his music. The inconclusiveness isn't weighed against circumstantial evidence, and there is mountains of circumstantial evidence that points toward suicide!
Also, they do sound like a fan, it's YOU who "just recently discovered him", don't even know all his music yet, and believing the "off" theory, that most fans don't agree with, but thinks they do, YOU come off as not much of a fan. You're just dumb, that's the only thing happening here. Lady, please. You need to be more objective in your research. Evidence for suicide is overwhelmingly more prominent than murder. You act like people accept suicide at face value. No. We've all done the reading. Some people are just better at reasoning, and discerning truth from smoke, than others. Also, WHAT NUMBERS don't lie?
There is some physical evidence that works both for and against either theory, so that's a wash IMO, even still, physical evidence leans toward suicide, and circumstantial evidence STRONGLY leans toward suicide. Also, for murder there has to be way more evidence before you can start pointing fingers, as it is a much rarer act, than suicide. Elliott seemed more like a suicidal person, than Chiba seemed like a murderer! lol no one ever thought "she seems like a murderer", but people sure thought "Elliott doesn't seem like he's okay...", yet you easily believe she committed this rare act of murder, over a suicidal person committing the relatively more common act of suicide, despite investigators all agreeing there's not enough evidence to charge a murder. Not even close actually! If you understood law, which is based around reason (when it works how it's supposed to at least). That's not naïve, it's common fucking sense, lady. Then again, so is a spherical earth, and you failed to piece that together.
I think the only braindead person is you. You say you KNOW he was murdered? Wow that's great, because nobody else does. You found proof? Please share.
Oh wait, you don't know shit. Looking at it all, it seems an obvious suicide to me, with a remote possibility of murder, cos', ya never know. YOU NEVER KNOW! Get it? The fact you don't understand this simple concept, throws any credibility your opinion might have had, out the window. Well, flat earth already did that... But you are being aggressive over a harmless, reasonable comment. You sound stupid. Factional? It's _factual_. You can't even say the word, yet you claim to know the facts. That's like saying "i'm a pro chef" and spelling it shef. Like, no you're not.
Just so you know, cos you're a new fan, the vast majority of fans do think the murder theory is unlikely. You are in a small minority of tinfoilers so quit acting like everyone thinks he was murdered. His family and friends don't, for the most part. "Can and does lead any person", actually no. The small fraction of people who think Elliott was murdered, or claim to "know" he was, are just very loud, the rest of us are usually focused on the music, and understand reasonable doubt. IF our justice system acted on your principles, half the country would be locked up. Brainwashed and naïve? No, they are reasonable.. You are being childish, unobjective, and you clearly lack critical thinking ability. You have zero understanding of how justice is carried out reasonably in western law, or what the difference between proof, facts and evidence is. Three very different things. You're letting emotion for Elliott twist your perspective. I love him too, but I don't turn into an idiot trying to find a scapegoat for his death. It usually seems to be women who go hard in the paint for the murder theory and absolutely HATE Chiba based on a hunch, but Elliott loved her, she loved him. You can blame Elliott, it's okay. He was far from perfect. All is forgiven as far as I'm concerned. I can't understand it, but accept it made sense to him in the moment. It's a terrible, nearly unbearable thought. But hey, life.
Also, try imagine for a second he did kill himself, if you're even adult enough to entertain the opposing argument for that long - How much would Elliott fucking hate the fact his suicide unintentionally led to his lover being vilified by a group of internet conspiracy theorists? If you're wrong... Well... you'd be making Elliott spin in his damn grave. That's worse to me, than letting a murderer go free. By far.
And not trusting anyone, is just as dumb as trusting everyone. Most people, smart people, take all into consideration and form their own opinion with each situation. They don't just blindly distrust law lol. Cos, sometimes, there are just good, normal people, doing their job to the best of their ability. That's right! Sometimes reality is just normal, and boring. Almost always is, actually. Ask any judge. And if it isn't, well how about get some fucking proof to show it isn't? You seem to just distrust law and agree with anything that's opposed to it, which... is just... low IQ shit. All conspiracies are based off bits of evidence. For once I want proof from one of you Loony Toons.
The numbers don't lie? WHAT NUMBERS? What are you talking about? What number, what figure, did you see or hear or read that somehow proves Elliott was murdered? Seriously you can't just say whatever you please in order to make you SEEM more valid. There are no numbers lol. And of course they don't lie, if there were any. Numbers mislead though. You are misled. Which is fine, but don't be misled AND act like a bitch. That's a shit combination, a know it all who knows shit? Fuck that person.
If everyone knows he was murdered, how come this is even a conversation? You have a HUGE disconnect from the general opinion on the circumstances of his death. From reality. It really is a small portion of Elliott fans who would agree with you. You're living in a fantasy. Who wrote the articles that convinced you? Some random person with about as much perspective as you. Not much. _It's a cloud of smoke, I can guarantee you this,_ in our boy's words! Or have you even heard that song yet, super fan?
Also most of Elliott's friends and loved ones believe it was a suicide. So WTF are you talking about, anyone who reads up on it will know he was murdered? I guess none of them have heard the theory he was murdered? xD you're so foolish. When people claim the only reason the opposition doesn't agree with them is because they are naïve, I find 99% of the time, that ACTUALLY means the speaker is just stupid. Like people who say masks are for sheep. Just dumb.
And the moon isn't cheese, ffs.

Oh this guy ALSO has conspiracy theory playlists, and believes in the murder theory. MK ultra, chem trails. ugh. Big surprise, another idiot perpetuating stupid ideas thinks Jennifer killed Elliott. Stating your weird theory as fact? Hallmark of an idiot. You never hear reasonable people say "Elliott killed himself 100%", because a reasonable person would conclude that he most likely killed himself, but allows for the possibility of anything. 100% anything is shortsighted and the fact you think that way all but proves you didn't look at the research objectively. You and Danielle are perfect representatives for your side of the debate. Earth is flat, NASA are Nazis, MK Ultra is a thing, chemtrails be real, and Elliott was murdered. That's you guys :p hilarious. Childlike lack of understanding of reality. You refuse to believe sometimes life is just, what it seems - normal and boring. We're not in a movie.
