I've had cats all my life, & currently have two. But I couldn't tell the cat face was swollen. My cat, that passed away a few years ago (he was 17). he had a bad tooth, but I only knew b/c he cried in pain. I took him to the vet, they pulled it, & he lived a long happy life. Thank God for vets.

Its not always easy to tell. Also depends on the cat race I would say. I had oriental shorthair and you could see any single discrepancy. Now I have siberian cat and I have hard time recognizing if shes getting fat or if its just her fur

My poor boy kinda-sorta had the same thing when he was about 6-7, but w/o a burst abscess and/or other rotten teeth like that cat there. He never had another tooth issue all the way to his passing at age 15. I felt so bad for him I almost wanted to cry and I'm a GUY! I didn't even notice it til I came home from work for lunch and he was still in his sleeping spot from the morning and I looked at his face. It was a little harder to see the problem as he was a tux cat instead of a lighter colored one. Poor guy. I called back into work w/ an excuse and desperately looked for a vet who could get him in before closing and was able to. They pulled 2 molars. He must've been in such pain.

Wow, surprised to get 16 thumbs up or 16 reactions at all after only 18 hrs of this. I wasn't expecting a single one. My cat did well after that dental work, he had to chew hard food a little oddly, but never had another tooth prob glad to report. I dearly miss that puss, reason being because it was the classic left-behind runt that was half dead and wet and almost nonresponsive and my mom was able to quickly nurse it into a fire siren of meowing for milk and ultimately it bonded to me mostly. He was bonded to the point that he used to sleep in the corner of my bed against the wall in his own little separate bed. He was smart enough to know when I was asleep because he would jump up onto the bed and then stand on my back and stay there for a minute to test if I was truly asleep, sometimes w/ all 4 paws (little bugger). I'd be awake a few times unknown to him, but he wanted to see if it was ok for him to pass out and be "vulnerable", even tho I was his friend I would gently touch him w/ my foot when I woke up and he would purr.

About 10 years ago I had a very similar situation with a badly infected wisdom tooth that had begun to migrate into the jaw, I have to say Misha is so much better tempered than I was! Infections like this seem to come on really quickly, so Misha's lovely owner did the right thing and called Audrey in as soon as she realized there was a problem. For me, with local anaesthetic, it won't work if you have an infection, so I had to have strong antibiotics and wait out he infection before the tooth could be removed. Whilst it may be deeply disgusting, the relief when the abscess burst out was enormous, and meant I could get the tooth gone sooner. I have a pretty good idea of just how much better Misha must have felt when she woke up and didn't feel like her face was splitting in two!! Such a beautiful old girl too.

    • @nonplayerzealot4

And your name is Kat, ironically. I've had hellish, white knuckle root canals and all that, too. I've been there, gurl. I've never had the luxury of an abscess completely rupturing, tho. I only wish I did, and I wouldn't care how gross. Every tooth infection I've ever had, I had to do the full antibio course just to get the root canal. One time there was a sac hanging on a tooth that actually had to be extracted. It was hanging off of the roots like a little punching bag. Even after a full week of anti-B's there was still a little bit of infection remaining.

My dog was having trouble chewing so I took her to the vet, suspecting an infected tooth. They told me she was fine. I asked for antibiotics and was told she didn't need any. Fast forward ten days and the side of her face swelled. I took her to the emergency vet at 3am and they saw the infection. I begged them to hospitalize her for IV antibiotics but they said it wasn't necessary. They gave oral antibiotics and her dental was scheduled for 4 days later. She continued to go downhill, getting sicker and sicker. We took her to back to both our primary and emergency vets every day trying to get someone to admit her for help. They both said she was fine on oral antibiotics and would be good after surgery. I dropped her off the morning of surgery and got a call a few hours later that she died during the dental procedure. As I suspected, they said she was most likely suffering from sepsis and it infected her heart.
My point in sharing this is to let everyone know not to take any infections, especially dental ones, lightly. We're absolutely heartbroken over losing our girl because she was young (6) and otherwise healthy. If one doctor had taken action, she'd still be with us. These folks are so fortunate to have this kind of amazing vet care. ❤️❤️

I once operated on my neighbors' kitten [don't try this at home] who had a huge abscess on top of her head. I didn't think there was that much pus in the world. The neighbors, who were supposed to hold the kitten wrapped in a dishtowel, were so grossed out they both let go and lay on the kitchen floor. The kitten screamed and pus spurted at the least pressure and it was pretty awful but when you don't have money for a veterinarian you have to go looking for an amateur surgeon. • @haneiyu

Dry food isn't good either. I think it depends on the brand and how worried you are about your cat'(s') life. Dry cat food cat lead to obesity, it's the leading cause behind most urinary tract problems, and it can cause diabetes. But that doesn't mean wet cat food isn't the best either. Nothing is "good," per se. It all depends on you. If you leave the dry cat food out, it can lead to obesity. It depends on how involved you want to be in your cat'(s') life. But of course, if dry cat food is best for you, then I think that's awesome. I hope you don't take this as me trying to be rude, I just wanted to point out that it all depends on you if you want to make sure your cat lives the best life. Have a good day :)
