    Heyy Gittemary,
I am writing to you here after trying to research on coping with climate crisis anxiety in third world nations. I come from a third world nation where air quality index is hitting 2000's when the scale ends at 500. Its extremely toxic and because we are still dealing with glaring inequalities and basic needs, the people who had nothing to do with climate crisis bear the brunt of it.
It is 3:38 AM here. Yeahhh, it keeps me up at night. The fact that I couldn't find proper research on developing nations and climate crisis is worrying.
Just wanted to say it to someone.

      What's wrong with polyester?

    • @umbrequil
      @umbrequil 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

@trekkie-cat Gittemarie alluded to it in the video, but polyester is made from plastic fibers. It's less durable than a natural fiber, and when washed, it sheds microplastics into waterways. Considering the textile industry is one of the highest producing industries, it creates a lot of waste, the majority of which is plastic synthetic waste

As a nurse, I’m not allowed by the hospital I work at to wear any of the gel nail polishes, artificial nails, nail wraps, etc, and they strongly discourage traditional nail polish, too. This is for infection control, and to prevent any of these things from getting into patients’ wounds and orifices. They also don’t let us have long nails, also for infection control and safety. Nail fungus loves to live under artificial nails, and it’s harder to keep your nails clean if they’re long. I actually prefer having very short, polish-free nails, because I have way better dexterity that way. This just reinforces that nail polish is not the way to go for me. Thank you for telling us how to dispose of it properly!

Thank you for your research into the topic. I’m just like yourself, I haven’t worn nail polish for many years because of chemical exposure concerns, without knowing precisely what is in nail polish it’s not difficult to suppose it’s not all that great, but I have never dived deeper into the subject. A few months ago I came across 10-free label on a nail polish from Benecos, that got me curious…and sold🫣 I did buy into this label and started wearing nail polish again on daily basis.
But I’ll have a big rethink after watching your video and will most likely be saying goodbye to nail polish once again!

👏🏻👏🏻 great summary! I dabble in pottery so I basically never have nail polish on my hands, but I do like putting (air dry) polish on my toes from time to time. The dosage makes the poison in a lot of ways, so me using air dry polish every once in a while is a less dangerous source for toxin exposure than many other choices I make day in day out. That being said, I do think it's important these polishes get regulated specifically for the nail technicians!

Recently there was a news article in the Netherlands about a research. It talked a type of silicon used in nailstudios and home nailstudios when used wrong or gets in a small wound can cause allergic reactions. The big problem is that if you’re allergic you won’t be able to get some medical aids wen necessary anymore because it uses that kind of silicon. It had large numbers of people already suffering from it. (If I can find the research or the article, I’ll update the post)

When I wear nail polish I like to use the brand Benecos! Their other products are eco certified and they have been very transparent and open about the fact that you can't make a nail polish that would pass the certifications they have for everything else, so they have stated they made a nail polish that is the least amount of bad that's possible. Combining the brand's overall ethos and the transparency on the nail polish I'm inclined to believe it's truly not as bad as some other brands' nail polishes, plus for me it has worked equally well as "regular" nail polish! Would recommend.

I haven't used it for 2 years. Now that my mind is free of it, it looks like such a waste of time and money. We create our own traps to the point where it feels wrong not to use it. It's so good to be ok with not using it.

As someone who developed an acrylate allergy (not from nail polish, but from working in manufacturing and they didn't properly protect us 💀) it is not only lifelong, but acrylates are sensitizers so the allergy can get worse if I am exposed again. And it's not just gel nail polish / false nails, which is a common belief. Because of it I can't use certain types of adhesive tape and glue, including dental/surgical glues.

    Hey Gittemary,
First of all this blouse looks so good on you!! Love it. Thank you also for this very interesting video. I just painted my toe nails a couple of days ago just to feel a bit fancy. Now I am thinking maybe I should skip this step too. Although I do not put on nailpolish this often I am concerned about the negative effects you mentioned.
So thank you for sharing. What I would be interested in would be an overview about makeup in general. What is ok for our bodies and what is too much? How about mascara and eyeshadow etc. maybe you have time to focus on this topic in one of your future videos. I would be happy to hear your thoughts about it. 😊

I stoppped using nail-polish when I stopped using cosmetics with animal testing. It was too time-consuming to find a company that didn't use animal testing on their nail polish. (That was in the beginning of the internet, information was not that easy to come by.) I found a manicure who works on natural nails and sometimes I get them done by her. No colour only bringing them in form. And I buff them with diatomaceous earth (if I feel like it).

This explains a LOT. I'd be curious to know how the ingredients in nail polish now compare with say 30 years ago? Reason I say that is I used to wear nail polish regularly when I was in my 20s and 30s. No issues. Recently a friend gifted me some nail wraps and I loved how they looked. They were supposedly made from the same ingredients as regular nail polish. However, my nails were wrecked afterwards!!! I'd never experienced anything like it before and it took almost a year for them to grow out all the damage, but they've not been the same since. Never again.

I didn't even know that those chemicals cause thyroid issues... I've had subclinical hypothyroidism for years but now for some reason my thyroid has been more active recently. It might be some other hormonal stuff but I also did stop wearing nail polish in the beginning of the year (not a concious decision, I just don't have the time and I am starting to like my natural nails).

I gave up nailpolish 10 years ago when I started working in retail and it would chip all the time. I have thought about buying a nice colour for myself and using it occasionally, but I don't think I'll bother now xD also, I'm not keen on nailpolish remover either, and you didn't even touch on those...

The first time I saw nail rings (also called wudu nail rings), I felt the surge of I wanted it. Its basically a wire ring that you glue a press-on nail on it and you never have to actually paint your nails, just put the rings on. I have seen that it is very popular for Muslims because they are halal.
To me this sounded perfect because I don't want to waste so much time while getting ready just to wait for my nails to dry. They never end up great anyways and I don't like to get acrylic or gel nails because they thin my nails so much.
