Wish I would have done my CMEL before CFI. Having the CMEL opened my options. Went from instructing in a 172 to an SIC on a jet.

Great video! I love how you say take action today to move forward your with your career goals. For someone like myself working on my PPL certificate. Having individuals like yourself helps me as I continue to grow in my Aviation ✈️ career. Thank you and God bless.

💯 correct. I pushed my son to get His ME commercial rating at about 750 hrs total time. That put him on top of the applicant pool.

I pushed my son to join the military. In the course of 14 years he’s served his country, earned a college degree, was gainfully employed and earned all rating (with exception of seaplane). He’s undergone some the best training in the world. He’s on a heavy jet and well trained in the CRM that airlines operate under. He’s bypassed having to endure the riskier flying others have had to do gaining experience to earn their ATP. He’ll soon leave the military bypassing regionals and go on to a major “on top of the applicant pool”. I often urge folks to consider active or part time military aviation to jump start their aviation careers.

Staying current on an ME plane and review on one is what gets tricky about this rating if it's not what you typically fly.

Very true. Also staying proficient can be a challenge. That is why Many people try to get their ratings close to their getting hired at a job requiring the rating. This can also be a challenge because I have counseled many pilots unable to schedule a check ride or training before their start date at the new job.

💯% correct! I’m so glad that I got my multi commercial first and single as an add on.
Have a few friends who are struggling to get in the airlines for not having it as you said.
I made my hours as a CFI, but I’m considering getting my double I after type rating.
At some point I would like to still teach on the side and be able to teach instrument as well.

The multi rating is the shortest training, easiest, and least expensive rating to get get. Or at least it was.

I talked to a friend yesterday. We both love aviation, but I think we are not alone in that we are thinking about calling it quits. It just isn’t any fun anymore. It has just become a lot of work and regulation without much fun. My friend had his license pulled because he had sleep apnea 20 years ago when he was overweight. Another friend quit his job and got all his ratings and got a job with Skywest. After six months he quit and is now working for an A&P. General Aviation is dead. Commercial aviation is not far behind: it just isn’t any fun getting crammed in a tube without any services. If it keeps going in the direction it is going, I’ll be out too.

If I have met all of the hour requirements for a R-ATP, have CFI, CFII, MEI, and have completed the ATP written, what else can I do to stand out to recruiters if I want to work for an airline or corporate gig?

Volunteer and be a good human. I have a friend who was recruited while volunteering at a booth for an aviation organization. The second show where the recruiter noticed them, they asked if they would like to do an interview, and they did it right at the event. This is a true story and it happened in October. (Edit: They met at PAPA then again at LPA. Going to the regionals.)

Maybe volunteer at an aerobatic contest. Several of our friends from the local chapter were pretty senior pilots at majors. Unusual attitudes training isn’t bad either, if you haven’t already done it.

Do you think people starting now have missed the boat? I'm 24 and have just started on PPL a few weeks ago. I want to go for this as a career but I'm nervous about the future. I have a bachelors degree and worked in corporate for two years but I didn't want to spend rest of my life behind a computer.
I don't have any debt from college and between my savings + my parents loaning me money should have enough to get through 0 to CFI without loans. I'm just worried I finish flight training and there's no CFI jobs. Or there's another recession and I'm stuck in CFI for 8-10 years.

You will never regret having your full qualified Pilot license. You have a degree already so you use that for a just incase... End of. Good luck

I noticed that even with 1000 hrs many places won't hire unless you have CFI. They just want to see CFI regardless of hours.

Many of our clients decide to fly instead of obtaining the Flight Instructor Certificate and get hired because of their experience. To find out more on how we can help you get hired visit: www.aviationcareerspodcast.com/coaching/
