  • Learn to make a common Colonial American drink, Shrub. This vinegar based beverage can be an alternative to citrus juices and was used to preserve berries and other fruits. Recipes are plentiful and varied, including both alcoholic and nonalcoholic. In this family-friendly video, historical interpreter Becky Whippie of the Historical Society of Cheshire County in Keene, NH, makes two recipes-- strawberry and rhubarb.

" Shrub " and " Lovage " a herb based liqueur , were still available as commercial mixers in pubs in Northern England in the 1980s . They were stored in brown glass stoppered bottles . In Alford, Lincolnshire they would drink it with Rum especially around Christmas time . Very nice too .

I have made a raspberry shrub and a blackberry shrub. Blueberry next. Seasonal fruit. Because it is equal parts just measure the fruit you pick and add the same amount of vinegar and sweetener; honey, maple syrup, sugar. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!
