    I grew up in Malaysia and wet market is common, we get our daily fresh produce from wet market growing up. Even in Korea and Japan. Wet market is a good way supporting small grower and cheap business set up for small business owners. It is our culture and we don't see what is wrong with it other than keeping a better management and better hygiene practices.

    Matt I feel your frustration with whats going down mate. I also have a very strong connection with China and the USA and I have to say that while I am not by any means a CCP supporter I also cant help contrast the way that China and the USA have handled the pandemic. I am appalled by the way the amateurs in the Trump administration has handled this whole crisis . The USA under Tumps watch is more politically polarized and divided nation than ever before and in my opinion the animosity that Trump has caused between the federal government and the states and the politicization of key institutions during this crisis has lead to a massive break down in trust , cooperation and coordination leading to national disunity and a failure to cope. As a result every one of us now needs to be acutely aware that the blame game has already started , Trump will leverage off ignorance and fashion this in to a vehicle for saving his own skin. God help the Amercian people and the rest of us that that are likely to get dragged under by the wake of this horrific mess.

      Ron Bentley Agree! Some many Americans don’t know how China is. When the western media especially the USA media controlled 90% of the world’s speech, it’s so easy to inspire their citizens to shift the blame all the way towards Chinese and other Asians. I live in NY, now it is the epicenter. The crime of anti Asian is soaring up here drastically. People are buying guns to protect themselves. Cops are relatively useless now. There are more than 1500 city cops infected and couldn’t be on the job. Plus, they are afraid of being infected and wouldn’t even wanna do anything if nothing is serious.

    • @juleshi4124
      @juleshi4124 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Miliyaliyahe Yes, I lived in China and SE Asia for many years. It's a little less like a 'farmer's market kind of thing' and more like an outdoor butcher with dead animal parts everywhere, no refrigeration, no gloves, no masks, no hand washing, no containment, no testing for pathogens... Sure, if the stall is selling bad food, the people won't buy it (and there is something to be said for caveat emptor to correct bad practices). However, in the west we pay a lot more for our food, because this includes our health inspection and safety standards. We pay so that something like the COVID19 global disaster doesn't happen. In my opinion, the real problem isn't even that the health system doesn't exist, it's that if they put it into place the system is corrupt. Inspectors can be bought for a price and farmers can continue to sell what and how they want.This is evident already in China's history of food safety issues. It's a big problem, and will be interesting to see how things evolve in China moving forward.

    I also agree this caught America way off guard. The lack of preparation was due to how supply chains became globalized over several decades. So many masks for instance were primarily still made in America until one day 90% went overseas. This is not a wakeup call to America only, but the entire world, that production facilities need to be spread out around the world to not have to depend on 1-2 countries for supplies. When in a pandemic of this scale, the very country you are depending on supplies will be needing those same very things. COVID-19 is the perfect case study where globalization fails humanity. Because it only stays together when business is as usual.
    COVID-19 is not a call to return all manufacturing inward for each and every country. It is a call that a balance needs to be established that allows the manufacturing capabilities for a regional area to be big enough to sustain that region, but still work in a global market.
    How everything was centralized because it was more about the bottom dollar. That is what has to change.

I know you want to offer your perspective to others with your unique experiences through your traveling to so many places. That is very noble of you. However, you can't change the world or others' opinions. Don't stress over things that you have no control over. That will just drive you crazy.

People had heads up and knew this was coming but down played it. Even today its being downplayed and it makes me sick. Its putting so many in danger. Including those of us who are immunocompromised. Like me and my daughter and my soon-to-be born son. And yet my husband can't quit his job or stop because he's needed. So every time he goes out it comes home the risk of us getting sick skyrockets. And if something would happen and we were to get sick we won't make it. We are too sick normally to be able to make it. You're not the only one who's upset about it. I unsubbed the 2 motorcycling guys you mentioned after being a 5 year subscriber. It was a sad decision for me but their videos has clearly turned very politically biased. They talk as if they are experts on things they only have a fraction of knowledge on, probably only read a few paragraphs from wikipedia. They have also clearly resorted to clickbaits and only offer one side of the perspectives which makes their videos very misleading to their large audiences, and currently it has generated a lot of visible anti-Chinese sentiment.
      I grew from loving their videos and defending them against over-nationalistic Chinese comments to feeling disgusted by their content over the past year. I would suggest that you take the current videos produced by them with a huge grain of salt, or stay away if you can.

    You did it of your own volition, and no-one told you and others anything. This could have been done by the airlines easily and at zero financial cost to anyone. A simple opportunity missed, all that was needed was a directive from the US government for it to be done, such a simple thing.

    I'm an American-Filipino (mother is Filipino). I don't see the issue with the mere existence of a wet market. The change needs to be in the health and safety in wet markets.
    From more sterilized areas in markets, the separation of species to prevent transfers of viruses from species to species or zoonotic transfer into humans, et cetera.
    You are right that China isn't the only country with wet markets. Because they exist wherever refrigeration is not common. I think focus is put on China because of their immense appetite because of the amount of people in the billions that exist in China. That requires a lot of food, that many people surely do not take a moment to try to comprehend.
    All in all, my position is not the elimination of wet markets as stated, but the implementation of health and safety regulations for wet markets that exist all over Southeast Asia and the rest of the undeveloped world.

      wet markets aren't as common as you might think, lots of young people just go to convenience stores to get the hormone injected whatchamacall it that Matt was referring to. Also note that china cannot make itself sufficient on pork and poultry due to the fact that they don't have the legal, and ethical standards in place to not have individuals at various levels of the supply chain not cutting corners or risking contaminating their stock just to save some money, so you have seen pokr prices rise astronomically now that china is trying to be self sufficient in pork.
      Lots of "oopsies" last year for china and alot of it was no coincidence. Wet markets might have served as a "super spreader" but peronsally I think Laowai86 has a far better theory with the lady who was doing some weird traditional chinese medicine studies. She probably had individuals consuming bats. TCM probably has some good things too it by focusing on nature over synthetic remedies but it also promotes blatant barbarism and superstition such as eating dogs and if the dogs suffer while they are killed then the meat is supposed to be more "revitalizing". There is far too much happening in china with far too little accoutability because the chinese communist party uses accoutability as a political tool and rarely enforces it beyond the realm of their own self interests.

      Ancient Time actually, it may have a lower population than the US etc, however it has been a concerted effort to 'flatten the curve' across the country, that has helped keep our numbers down. No 'herd immunity' crap. We don't have sufficient icu beds and ventilators, so Australia has implemented laws to help keep numbers lower. The infection rate:death rate is far lower regardless of population numbers.
      I must add, it hasn't really hit here yet and is expected to peak around November this year now. Each State has different rules and laws. The Eastern states have a far higher incidence of infection and higher deaths. WA was the first to go hard. Aud50.000 fines and /or jail for breaches. They now have aud1000.00 on the spot fine for breaches of social distancing. Police patrols, closure of the State Border with only certain exceptions. Other states have now closed their borders also. Testing regulations have now changed as it is being community spread. I generally don't like our government, but even though they got off to a slowstart, I have to commend them on listening to experts and making the hard decisions, and having a plan of sorts. Our country went through the absolute horror of the devastating bushfires recently, this virus on its back. Many communities are far from recovered, many still don't have homes. Wild animals are sold at many wet markets. I think most people around the world are fine with an outdoor market, it’s the regulations that need to be tightened. If China has the ability to check temperatures and create a code for every citizen green yellow or red, then they have the ability to properly regulate the markets. It’s not just about wild animals though, any meat products or dairy that isn’t properly handled & refrigerated puts people at risk. Even vegetables handled in a unhygienic way have the potential to pass illness or disease. 100s of people touching everything to check it before it’s sold and butchering on site without proper hygiene protocols or basic food safety handling protocols endangers everyone. Educating the seller & customers on food safety protocols is imperative to keep China and the rest of the world healthy. I understand people need access to food but Business as usual is irresponsible to say the least. If most of China is reopening right now a huge priority should be education and regulation of the wet markets. If China can build hospitals in a few days they can also handle regulation for food safety and taking the sale of wild animals seriously. Not just saying it’s illegal and pretending not to notice the restaurants selling pangolins bats and dogs for example. This goes for EVERY country in the world where this is happening. If it doesn’t change the virus will continue and new viruses may pop up. Let Educate and regulate be the mantra. Education..Regulation! Educate ..Regulate!

    I agree Matt, it’s hard to explain it to those who grew up never knowing what a wet market is, then having this issue come up with covid-19(even SARS), and having the media paint the picture for them. Then they only fear and doubt, without truly understanding what a wet market is. There has been a lot of anger directed at Asians in America without truly understanding the situation. The best way I have been able to explain to America is that Pike place market in Seattle is essentially a wet market. There has been so much hate toward Asian countries until people realize that a wet market is not entirely how media portrays it. It is hard for people to open their minds to different cultures and understand that this is a time of struggle for everyone. There is no need for anyone to attack anyone right now. Rather we need to help each other.

People like us probably need to start educating others more, if they don’t listen, we just need to keep trying until they do. It’s kind of an irony, growing up in S.E Asia in the 70s and being drummed into your mind how bad communist is and all that from early school years, until you get to China and understanding the cultures and people and “unlearned” or more correctly fine tuning one thought, then you see the two sides of the coin, which for some people is a difficult thing to do. Unfortunately we have people that are doing this to get personal gain be it wealth or power and will just need to see them as different from us.

      I've never been to the shadier ones but when I was in China I've been to wet markets. It looks just like a farmer's market in Canada. You have stands where people bring their stuff to sell, mostly fairly normal stuff too. Veggies, fruits, etc. Granted there's also meat like pork, which is unusual for the farmer's market comparison. Those are like the meat counters in Walmart, so those aren't that weird to me either.
      Point is blaming wetmarkets in general for this is like blaming supermarkets in general for what something that happened at your local safeway.

    You have to remember that the US is a federal system. The people are sovereign and have delegated authority to govern in different shares to the States and to the federal government. The responsibility for the response to pandemics is bottom up. This is the National Incident Management System that operates under the Stafford Act. (This is the same law that guides response to hurricanes, wildfires and floods.)The local governments are responsible for initial response until they are overwhelmed, then they declare an emergency and draw upon the State for resources. (Each county has an Emergency Operations Center which would enter into Unified Command with the local public health Dept. and a Pandemic Plan that they are supposed to update and practice.) If the state is overwhelmed, it can declare an emergency and request that the feds recognize that emergency. Then it can draw upon federal resources (the stockpile.) The federal government acts in a response support role to the States through FEMA. Specific requests for type and amounts of needed supplies and resources flow from the bottom up. It is the States which have been delegated the authority and responsibility to protect the general public health, safety and welfare from harm. The counties and the states failed to set aside pandemic supplies, such as masks, gloves and gowns. In some cases, they failed to rotate outdated supplies or refill after the last flu outbreak. (To be fair, some - such as the amount of ventilators needed, could not be anticipated.) The federal government also failed to update supplies after flu in the Obama era. There is plenty of failure to go around.

      Why set up such inefficient systems and get entangled in knots whenever emergencies of life and death situations occur. That's when you'll say f**ck the system, but unfortunately the damage has already been done. It's what common sense would interpret as a complicated solution to a simple problem! To my simple mind this tangled web of rules and laws are drawn out of distrust and lack of faith in the central government. Another minus point to America's system of blinkered democracy. Politicians there have to spend billions of dollars belonging to the very same people who they raised from who also vote them into office every four years. It's a huge two sided partisan driven political carousal!

    • @marciaarmstrong2157
      @marciaarmstrong2157 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@khanniniah Freedom is not as efficient as top down tyranny. It requires individual responsibility to assess personal health risk and exposure with available information/advice and to take individual action to avoid, minimize and mitigate the risk of exposure. In the US, the American people, not the government, are sovereign. The government has been delegated limited power and authority. There are legal challenges right now to state attempts to regulate religious gatherings, the madating of mask wearing and force lockdowns. Americans prize individual liberty. These are values that may not be shared with other cultures. What has been accomplished here in mitigation is largely based on voluntary compliance.

    When I first went to China back in 2008 my first reaction when I visited a wet market was that this is kind of like a farmers market here in the States but only more exotic. The things that I saw being sold and eaten were surprising to me but I didn’t give it too much thought as my Grandparents grew up in China and that’s what they ate. I’d hate to see those markets go but I do think that they should be a little more regulated and exotic animals should not be sold there for obvious reasons that were now stuck with. I agree that both China and America should have done things differently but now it shows that we were unprepared. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and stay safe.

    Good video. On the topic of wet markets, I think the issues that need to be considered are food sourcing, hygiene, and sanitation. The foods that enter the markets are not regulated, and can come from any source. The source may be a very clean private farm or some animals that were obtained through not so good means. For example, there have been scandals with lab animals being sold for meat to wet markets. As for hygiene, not separating butchering areas from vegetable areas, and not cleaning or using refrigeration is a great way to breed and spread disease. On the topic of sanitation, the wet market near my last home in China (I still live in China) was located near a sewage plant that dumps sewage into a canal. Literally, less than 50 feet from the canal, and it smells like sh##. So what I'm trying to say is the concept of a wet market as a farmers market, is good. Having all that fresh food in one spot is awesome. The problem relates to standards and regulations. China is really sloppy about implementing those regulations. Guanxi usually wins out.
