Yes; I just listened to it last night for the first time in a while and found it fantastic. Beautiful production, full of imagination, surprises, atmosphere, wonderful melodies and even humour. I've always loved that album, though. I never did understand the way it was treated. But it does seem to be getting even better with age.
@@Inharmonics I initially had mixed feeling about it, but last summer I was taking a walk outside and decided to give it another spin after so many years, and all of sudden it clicked hard.
Really fantastic to hear Nicolas telling about what's in his back at Amoeba! 👍❤✌ There was a time you could hear songs by Air on the radio in Puerto Rico, just like in the old days when a tune "hit" you through the airwaves on the street, the shops, the bus stop, the markets... and you search for the record and play it to death at home. Man I just love my Air records!!! ... Bacharach is such a smart choice, encyclopedic timeless Burt songbook with top voices, no misses there!
Superb choices. You have given me several albums I simply must have. I adore your Pocket Symphony, Talkie Walkie, and Moon Safara albums, I must surely have played these album hundreds of times. Thank You for the pleasure your music have brought me. Concrete And Glass is also a wonderful record. Merci for the escapism.
Wonderful short video highlighting Nicolas modesty and reverence of his inspirations. Premiers Symptomes will always be the best AIR release in my opinion.
Great choices. The Elton John footage is wonderfully fey looking. Love the shots of Elton and his band floating slowly down the river at the height of Southern France Summertime. Heaven on earth.
OMG! I am glad to see you can actually get that White Noise album at your actual store! I found them when I had to look up different electronic music albums for class. That album is amazing!
Wow, there was an unexpected flashback for me. As soon as the clip of "Here Come the Fleas" by White Noise started playing, I immediately recognized it, but without knowing when I heard it before. I pulled it up and knew the lyrics as they were being sung, but I could only assume it was from the Dr. Demento show that I listened to regularly in the 80s. It's probably been about 35 years since I've heard that track!
I would like to see a few videos of the same format but with each stores most hardcore collector, customer. The ones you see every week picking up diverse deep catalog.
Since I was a teenager and I discovered Air like most people with Sexy Boy and All I need. I became obsessed with their style and courage of experimenting in music. They are and will always be my idols as a music producer.
PS: many tracks have blown me away. And "Tropical Disease was one of the last I can clearly remember. With just one sentence that explains what message every love song ever is truly saying. And since they made a lot more songs by this time I am going to return and probably discover many more. So please keep them coming Air !
He’s picking stuff I like, and one of the rare guys on here who is ok with it picking up everything on vinyl. Damn, Air went a little quiet, need to check out the discog on what I missed.
Damn!!! Your a Portishead fan? Me too!!!! I'm the only guy in my whole state that even knows who they are!!!!! I'm a huge Zappa fan too but my fav from him is Joe's Garage Acts 1, 2 and 3.
Yup. After you have listened to that a few times you can graduate to Weasels Ripped My Flesh. Just kidding. Sheik Yerbouti is probably a good next step down the road of Zappa.
He makes a good point that less technically accomplished musicians make better records, because they have to get more creative and work around their limitations. This even applies to Frank Zappa. I think his early 60s stuff is his best, when he was working with less competent musicians. When he got a bunch of virtuosos backing him in the 70s-80s, his stuff got less interesting, imo.
This is exactly why I appreciate Buckethead, but don't listen to him often. Amazingly skilled and inventive, but his music mostly lacks something undefinable.
a good episode. 'to make great records you have to be bad' seems disingenuous but thinking about the yngwie malmsteens of the world - this makes so much sense now.
Great selections. Very cool. Got a question Amoeba. Ever tried to get Tori Kelly or Asia Argento in your store for a "What's in My Bag" segment? I'd be curious to see what they would select..
We haven't tried to get either of them before but we'll keep them on our radar. I'm not sure how often Asia Argento is in LA, but she's awesome, that would be great.
Glenn Gould is a freaky genius...Watch Glenn Gould Off The Record. Truly a strange and ridiculously gifted man. His recordings of Bach's Goldberg Variations (whatever that is all about) are breathtaking. The White Noise album is an interesting choice, even though it is awful, apart from the track that sounds like A Saucerful of Secrets....which is great.
Here's our write up of it for a little more info: www.amoeba.com/an-electric-storm-cd-white-noise/albums/765852/ I don't think there are any official streaming posts of it. You can hear it here though: th-cam.com/video/p_54auCNqao/w-d-xo.html
Moon Safari is such a beautiful album. Soundtrack to the late 90's.
La femme d'argent is one of the best songs ever to listen to when you are high...amazing album indeed!
@@HumanThoughtExpression Yes! And also raining outside!
Agreed. And Premiers Symptômes
is also quite good.
GAWD I love that album. It is timeless.
Ive Listened to it lots of times I love Moon Safari
Could listen to this guy talk about records all day
didnt understand a word really....
He is so humble, a man you made the fucking Moon Safari. Love you.
Cherry Blossom Girl, all time fave track from AIR. Can never get tired of it.
Same here! And Playground Love!!!
I think 10,000 Hz Legend needs more love than it got back in the day.
Juckey absolutely, Radian is amazing

Might be their best album

Dummy inspired Moon Safari ooooo I like this very much!
of course this dude is articulate, lovely when idols do not disappoint;)
Air is one of the greatest band!
We love you Nicolas!! So charming and glorious choices!

This series is such a great way to discover new music.
Love that he starts out with Glenn Gould. I listened to him for hours today. ❤
All the good musicians that I know, they don't make good records.
" super quote!
I love him! So happy you guys had him.
What a cool guy. Air's studio in paris is awesome. Inspirational
Great choices. The Elton John footage is wonderfully fey looking. Love the shots of Elton and his band floating slowly down the river at the height of Southern France Summertime. Heaven on earth.
Hérouville is near Paris. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Masses Esclaves bubble's not burst. It's still incredibly beautiful.
It is. No wonder french impressionists were inspired by the settings of the outer Parisian countryside.
Masses Esclaves Yes, beautiful works of art. ^_^
Low was recorded in France and mixed in Berlin, Lodger and Heroes were recorded in Berlin..
Yeah, question of latitudes.
totally right about the Portishead live album, I had the same impression
That White Noise album is absolutely mindblowing. Good picks all around, not surprising, Air is awesome.
I'm looking on Spotify and I cannot find it. Where can I listen to it?
I love that he loves Glenn Gould!
what a nice, genuine guy..thanks for uploading
These keep getting better and better!
Awesome! Thanks for watching.

AIR is great. I accidently found them on internet radio and have been a big fan ever since. Nobody really knows them in the states...
i used to have that Portisehead Live on VHS…..it was awesome

My favorite band. Really interesting to see how Dummy inspired Moon Safari. You can tell that this main really knows himself well.
I would like to see a few videos of the same format but with each stores most hardcore collector, customer. The ones you see every week picking up diverse deep catalog.
I LOVE Nicolas
Portishead is so cinematic and so good. Soundtracks was so important me for discovering music outside the charts.
Finally, some Zappa! I love that album.
this made me smile, and giggle with enthusiam
The part about being bad, was very inspirational and odly seems true from my experiences in life.
Since I was a teenager and I discovered Air like most people with Sexy Boy and All I need. I became obsessed with their style and courage of experimenting in music. They are and will always be my idols as a music producer.

One of the best episodes imo.
Fascinating!!

Ive always craved more records from Air... Mooooooooore. Pocket Symphony was only 2007? It feels like I've been listening to that all my life...
Wow, a Glenn Gould shoutout.
Damn!!! Your a Portishead fan? Me too!!!! I'm the only guy in my whole state that even knows who they are!!!!! I'm a huge Zappa fan too but my fav from him is Joe's Garage Acts 1, 2 and 3.
somehow i've always connected portis and air... so this was so suiting to watch. great stuff!
Geniuses. Love your art AIR. My fav. Beauty music ❤️💐
That was great. Thank you.
wow I like Air, more stuff please
What a sweet heart.
Really great show, I have not caught WIMB for a long time but I'll be catching up now. Thanks, Amoeba.
Thanks for coming back!
:)
AIR=Greatest ever!!!
Frank Zappa's Apostrophe is arguably the most accessible album Frank ever made. A great place to start for Frank.
Yup. After you have listened to that a few times you can graduate to Weasels Ripped My Flesh. Just kidding. Sheik Yerbouti is probably a good next step down the road of Zappa.
i feel like apostrophe/overnite sensation is the place to start, followed by one size fits all or hot rats, and then off the deep end...
HOT RATS
sweet, love those guys
Excellent band, good dude with good taste. This is a nice video.
Once again some interesting choices
Not surprised that Dunckel loves Portishead. They both have similar aesthetics
cant go wrong with Zappa and Portis,i have the white noise on cassette (re issue)
I love how AIR were influenced by Portishead. It blows me mind!
have you watched this at all ?
Great test in music Nicolas
If you haven't check out his Red Bull Music Academy interview, brilliant mind and artist
Agreed, a must listen!
"you have to be bad to make good records" this guy is the loml
What he said about the Portishead live album is the easiest description of the meaning of this milestone in music history ever given 😊.
Good point. I never put that together, why I don't like much Zappa past the 60's.
This is exactly why I appreciate Buckethead, but don't listen to him often. Amazingly skilled and inventive, but his music mostly lacks something undefinable.
Lovely
THANKS FOR THIS!!! ( from Chile)
Thanks for watching!
Now I understand you... well presented..
really good stuff
"In America everybody is a comediant". I laughed.
Interesting guy with interesting ideas.
in 2017 everybody is a comedian:(, every artist including mozart
Yes Zappa’s best album in my opinion!
Have you guys had Thee Oh Sees do 'What's in my Bag?" Yet? I think their choices would be very interesting and they're a humble bunch!
We're working on getting John in here for it. It'll definitely be a good episode when it happens.
was just about to say this. fuck yeah
Will you guys ever invite Baroness to be in an episode of What's in my bag ?
very nice
air created sceneries in each album.
You Should try getting Gilles Peterson on the show
Christiaan Valens love Gilles!
Do you really want a five hour episode? :)
Masses Esclaves yes
Or Mr Scruff. It would have to be a few days long tho!
Whoa that was the best what's in my bag. What is that recording of Bach bwv 848 C# preulde at the end?? It's so dope. Woo Zappa and Gould
It's the first track from one of his solo albums, "Contrepoint". The track is called: "Orca". :-)
a good episode.
'to make great records you have to be bad'
seems disingenuous but thinking about the yngwie malmsteens of the world - this makes so much sense now.
LOL...dude, Yngwie is my go to example for comparing guitar masterbation to a simple pop song with good melody. Less is more!
Get Hinds (spanish band)!Pleaseee!!
Wasn’t the Bowie Trilogy recorded in Berlin?
Nicko - lah ! Le cool mek

We haven't tried to get either of them before but we'll keep them on our radar. I'm not sure how often Asia Argento is in LA, but she's awesome, that would be great.
Put her on your Visit Bucket List lol. She has very eclectic tastes. I follow her on twitter. And Tori is just wonderful. :-D
Glenn Gould is a freaky genius...Watch Glenn Gould Off The Record. Truly a strange and ridiculously gifted man. The White Noise album is an interesting choice, even though it is awful, apart from the track that sounds like A Saucerful of Secrets....which is great.
Yeeay
French teaching us about US culture gotta love them God Bless America and Vive le France I am South African by the way
They've been at it a long time. We still call bleak American crime films from the 1940s "Film Noir."
Bowies trilogy was recorded in Berlin not France
"Im not a comedian".
That was ironically hilarious!
4:25 Truest statement ever
wow I thought Bowie's trilogy was recorded in Berlin with Eno. A reminder not everything written on internet's true
what!? this is PREPOSTEROUS! there was not one SINGLE bag in this video, so how can it be a whats in my bag?!
I was before Portishead and Air, and French, but in Versailles, they don't know ...
HI, does anyone know where I can find that Elton John footage?
It's on this DVD: www.amoeba.com/elton-john-goodbye-yellow-brick-road-dvd/movies/dvd-and-bluray/20853/
❤
Is it weird that the answer to the question is already in the title?
APOSTROPHE. Stink Foot really says it all.
Is there a way to get Sufjan Stevens?
We'd love to have him on the show. We'll stay on the lookout for the next time he's in LA.
Jenny Hval next plz.
We'd love to have her on. It doesn't look like she currently has any US dates, but we'll stay on the lookout.
What's the White Noise one? I've tried to find more about them on youtube but can't find anything.
Here's our write up of it for a little more info: www.amoeba.com/an-electric-storm-cd-white-noise/albums/765852/

thanks :) actually parts of it remind me of Raymond Scott.
Any chance of getting PJ Harvey or The Pet Shop Boys on future episodes.
like before watch it 👍
nah nah el amor que te tengo nico de mi cuore
Where's the other dude? Darkel...
Jean-Benoît's flight came in too late and he was unable to make it for this episode.
and it's Dunckel *
