could have if the deal with the deal with 3dfx didn't hit a sang when the stock holder report didn't leak they was working on the dreamcast. many dev at the time didn't feel that the NEC GPU they use was not up to the task and so they didn't put there games onto it. but as you see it can handle it in fact.
The unique murky and underground PS2 atmosphere was special and I'll never forget it. However this looks more in line with what I heard the devs originally planned for the dreamcast version, a more colorful look, and it's beautiful. You can almost taste those vivid blue Sega skies, brings back memories.
@theharwoodbutcher70 it is a revenge story where you have to be an underdog to every gang in the city to be able to accomplish your main objective, inspired by classics like Goodfellas, Godfather and Scarface. If you haven't played before paying attention to the story, do it now. You can even change parts of the story if you decide to do some missions before others.
What’s impressive is that they were able to get GTA3 down to 400MBs when the PS2 ISO is 1.5GBs. That means that GTA3 would have fit on a single disc. I real issue would have been San Andreas which is 5GBs, there’s only so much compression can accomplish.
bulk of the size of GTA games is mostly audio, they can still compress it to hell to fit an actual CD/GD-ROM, if they could make the mobile port very small then it's definitely possible
Without the Music,GTA 3 doesn't weigh a lot. The original RIPs people did back then could fit on a CD of 700MBs,the same applies to Vice City albeit just enough. It wasn't until San Andreas that Pirate copies needed a DVD even if took out the whole soundtrack as the game, without music, still weight more that 2GB. Here, the devs reduced the quality of the textures and music to fit all in a GD ISO,which has a size of 1GB.
Cool project, it's like a mashup of PC and PS2 elements, packaged into something entirely new. I have no idea what the Dreamcast can do, but I'm assuming from the streaming and textures it's really doing its best.
@mmpsp693 Yes, but Valve asked the creator to take it down due to not getting involved with Nintendo. It had to do with Old Proprietary Tools they developed for N64 Games.
@konradszkudlarek DC to GameCube ports were plentiful, I recall an interview back in the day from Sega claiming it took like two weeks to get PSO running in GameCube. Though I'm not sure if it is a well documented console, so who knows
Considering the GameCube’s more powerful than the PS2, there’s no doubt it can run GTA3. It’s only a matter of compressing the whole game to fit in a 1.5 GB disc.
VC isnt that different than 3 engine. It does have more lights though. The PC version also weighs around 1GB. With some compression, it could fit into a .gdi
@@Peb02497 Size isn't really a big issue if you're using ODE. But yes, Vice City is very similar to GTA3. It wouldn't surprise me if most of the assets are interchangeable between games(cars, character models, etc.)
This port is a paradox. Released today, it stands as a miraculous port. However, if it had been released in 2001, it would likely have been considered the worst port of GTA3.

man you can tell the downgrades that had to be made to make this work. Its very interesting and cool to see this running, but would i have bought it when it came out? absolutely not.
Atm its not a lot of downgrades assetswise. On the contrary. But yeah the final version will have asset optimisations to make it run same framerate as the PS2 version. At the moment it runs slower, has a bit less draw distance, some sorting issues, less pedestrians and lower texture resolution. Rest should be the same.
This is like a glimps into an alternate timeline where the Dreamcast survived.

It's really cool how the yellow of the taxi pops up on the gray of the city.
damn true
You can use the ps2 atmosphere in the dc versión
Gta 3 atmosphere is unmatched. I'm glad for this project giving a chance for people to rediscover it. It has my favourite story in the franchise.
GTA III's story is almost non-existent

You can strip the music, which pretty much strips down half of the game size
