    Really liked the initiative taken by Filmkopath to celebrate 100 yrs of Satyajit Ray through various interview sessions. The interview with Anirban is really bold , questions that were asked are really pertinent and well researched.
    One important point which came out from the discussion was how we have negelected the host of talented character actors from Bengal. We should talk more about them and celebrate their works.

    A nicely presented symposium on Ray's centenary about his creation & various other aspect on cinema.
    I have observed very few films of international fame, but a Polish film 'Kanal' as felt in 60's, really to me it was a spell bounded movie in b/w on 2nd. world war after capturing Poland by German.

    One of the most important pillars of Fascism is "sexual anxiety" which again comes from patriarchal society. To a fascist woman is a weak and less important gender. Now it wasn't possible for Ray to show sexual anxiety on celluloid for children. So I guess he had to show that there was no important female characters in the film (except for once in the slum that too weak) and not a single girl child was shown in the pathshala (may be they are not allowed to study).

    • @filmkopath
      @filmkopath  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's an interesting point.....but you see girls/woman not being there isn't the case for GGBB movies only. The entire Feluda series including the writings hardly has one as well. Shonku doesn't have much either. It is odd indeed. Also when you narrate a tale about fascism and its fall, absence of women entirely doesn't give the full picture isn't it ? I think Satyajit could have done it if he wanted to, he was too good a scriptwriter to not manage that. Again, this might just be nitpicking in a classic which is great by all means as we are trying to revisit these masterpieces from all angles in detail.

    • @chakraborty.biswadeep

      Are you saying that historically in Bengal or for that matter south Aisa girls were allowed to study in pathshala with boys? As far as I can understand Hirak Rajar Deshe is set in a medieval setting (period), and no girls in the Pathshala is a reflection of those dark times when girls were not even allowed to play with boys. Secondly I do not think Hirak Rajar Deshe was perceived by the director as a work depicting fascism per-se but oriental-despotism and use of royal propaganda in general. Plus its a satire that too meant for children primarily, but of course like any good children's film it is not restricted to that age group only.

    • @filmkopath
      @filmkopath  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chakraborty.biswadeep The pathshala might not be the only scene..it could be in the hut, or village or anywhere else. You see any "ism" cannot stand or fall without participation or presence of one half of the society. That's what was the point

    Yesterday I was watching dada in Feludas home... Where sourav ganguly suggests one thing, take at least one of Satyajit rays film and with proper English dubbing, re release it world wide... As we watch Chinese and corean film...
    As per my choice, Nayak is the best choice, because the story, the feelings and emotions of the protagonist some how is universal.... Once in a while any sensitive person who wants to grow in his or her career... Feels similar.... The guilt, fear, anxiety, tension....

      Good someone pointed this out. I too feel that after Rajit Kapoor, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is the best. Banerjee tried to keep the essence of Byomkesh and gave us something different while all the bengali byomkesh films just followed the original text and imitated each other without perfection. And yes, SSR was terrific in that film 👍🏼

      @@transitonly5841 I think Dibakar's film was great the way Calcutta was recreated but as for Byomkesh character, it didn't make its mark for me. The Bengaliness that Anirban spoke about in this discussion is hardly there in the SSR version. He is hardly seem to be a Bengali. not in looks but in vibe. Not his fault, it is the choice of him as Byomkesh. I will not consider it to be an experimentation as well, if you invest so much to build old authentic Kolkata why leave out portraying the authentic 🙂 Bengali

    As usual the Bengali intellectuals just do not understand what is going on in the country and lives in past to define fascist mentality.
    Current Indian politics is not about a man. It is much deeper and is coming out as cultural shift. It was intended and fascist behavior is always cultural. In the discussion this point is missed completely. There are some imstance of cultural motif in Hirok Rajar Deshe like Gupi Bagha meets a brain washed man but he was naive and not forceful as being observed in the social media today.
    Though Hirok Rajar Deshe definitely shows fascism and shows the vulnerability of common people it is not correct to describe this movie as the representation of modern day fascism.
    Also, everybody misses a point which is being shown in Hirok Rajar Deshe (it is debatable it was intentional or came very maturally). At the end the king comes out brain washed and along with the common people chants "dori shore maro tan...". He was brain washed but the same "magojdholai" instrument. That shows whoever comes to power uses the same method to establish rather than patiently change the system internally. Again, I am not sure it was intentional or natural.
    But problem is Bengali intellectuals observation is limited and they do not understand the context of current political wave and live in the world Mamphisto which is past and fail to give reverence to more modern films which define this fascism in cultural level. There are quite a few films (one of them is definitely Platform) on this subject but Bengali intellectuals like to live in past 😀
