  • This video shows you how to germinate the Compass Plant from seed. By winter sowing, or cold/moist stratification you can increase the germination rate. This plant can get 8' tall in normal conditions, and is basically a large sunflower that comes back every year. The leaves orient themselves North and South, and was supposedly used as a compass by wagon trains crossing the Midwest USA. This plant can become aggressive, spreading by rhizomes (sucker roots). If you have a small yard, you should take care to keep it contained or isolated. Otherwise, give it plenty of space and enjoy.

I love compass plant. I’m going to start a shit ton of them over the winter. Then gorilla plant them around. wish me luck. I found that if you put them in a warm green house for a few days and then bring them out into the elements they’ll grow without stratification. 😅

That is awesome - good luck spreading them. And thank you for letting me know that you don't need to stratify.

Thanks for the tip that they spread via rhizomes. I am spending my entire summer digging out a 60-foot trench of bamboo, so I am paranoid about spreading. Even though I had a 30-inch vinyl root guard surrounding the trench, the bamboo got through the space between the screws at the seam and took over my neighbor's yard. I planted some compass seeds last fall that did not come up, so this year I am trying it using the six weeks in the refrigerator. I read that the root can go down 13 feet deep that so the stalk is actually cool from taking water it pulls up. If they don't come up this time, I will buy a plant.

Thank you Alan. Bamboo terrifies me. If I ever have a neighbor plant it I'm going to take them to some overgrown bamboo colonies nearby. Awful stuff.
But good luck with your seeds though. It is a great plant. I've found the deer like to eat the leaves, but leave the cup plant alone.

Good video! I have the seeds and about to share them with others. Did you ever opened them and see what inside? Mine kind of empty 🤔 I was expecting to see some “meat” the there but nothing

Hi Maria - they are pretty empty - just like yours. But have faith - they will germinate. Just Winter Sow them and keep them somewhere where they get morning sun and afternoon shade (This is important)!

    How did it grow?

I had 3 cells have germination. This was their '2nd' year, and I think I have them in too shady of a spot. They are getting shaded from the 'Tall Sunflower', Cup Plant, and Asters. So they haven't thrown up any big stalks with blooms. They just been the '2-3' leaves sticking out of the ground.

@@growitbuildit i've read that they can take 2-3 years to bloom, did it finally show this year?

No Blooms! The plants were there this year, just putting up a few leaves. The area I planted them in has too much competition, as the Asters and Big Bluestem grasses seem to shade it out. I should have waited to start the others a year. In a more open space with 12+ hours of sun it probably would have been fine.
This year I've resolved to order some more seed and plant them out in the open, where they can thrive on their own.

@@growitbuildit Hi Joe, did you end up replanting the compass plant in a sunnier location. I'm just planting my stratified seed now in my new meadow. Now if I could only fast foward to 3 years from now.....

I actually did not transplant it. But this year it's having large leaves, so crossing my fingers it shoots up a stalk.
