    6 & 7 were my favourite rooms, 6 being the more usable out of the two. I really liked 11 as a snare reverb, if you were to cut all the low end out of it. Brilliant video! Love that you're going so far down the rabbit hole of an idea that could be kept short & sweet.

    Man I love this kind of stuff. I keep a collection of cardboard/PVC/metal pipes and tubes in my garage to run amps and drums through. So much more fun than just slapping another plugin on a track.

    3 retains some of that upper-mid trail/airiness that I normally associate with reverb. But, 12... that's pure lo-fi hip hop! Add some distortion and presto.

    I actually really liked Number 2 (7:22) - I thought it brought out the sustain in the toms really nicely (whereas 9 was a little too much imho) and was very well balanced. Very usable. Could also run it through a transient designer and crank it for some huge sounds!

    • @creativesoundlab
      @creativesoundlab 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah interesting you bring that up. 9 had sustain in the opposite side as the attack so the floor tom sustain would be on the right but you hear it (Attack) first in the left.

    6 and 12 are my favorites.
    6 has an overall great depth and image.
    12 sounded cool having the distance of the hose coiled across the room, can’t say the same for the funnel. Funnel gives it a futzed kinda sound imo.

  • @sentient8653
    @sentient8653 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love how ten emphasizes the kick and snare. I’d imagine funnel placement matters quite a bit, it might be neat to aim it at the cymbals more like an overhead.
    Honestly it might be cool to build something like this into an isolation platform just to have ready. Something where you could just screw the hose on to a nozzle when you need it. It’s unwieldy as-is, but I think that’s because you’ve been focused on experimentation over implementation.

    • @creativesoundlab

    I really like that odd high pitched metallic sound with #12, I think when you hit the snare. It also gets quite a bit of the beater sound, so maybe I’d use it specifically to record snare and kick alone and mix that in with the original, though that’d take two recordings or a really high set high pass filter :D. I agree with you though, the best one stand-alone was probably 7.

    I actually kinda like the sound of the 100ft with the funnel at one end. I feel like 50ft w/funnel was a little twangy/nasally sounding, and while the 100ft variation had a lot less of the delayed direct sound, I felt like the closed hose felt more 'stuffy' than with the funnel. I'm gonna go with 12 as my final answer.
    Although what if you did #3 and #1 simultaneously and blended them? Could be a total mess of phasing, or could sound really cool. Hmm...

    Distance always seems to be key, I'm not sure why but it always works out for the whole of the tone I would mic up regular but then wrap the house around the room whether independently or stereo but the whole outside perimeter. Just to catch that particular effect for the room sounds. But that's just me

    7 by far has the best stereo image and most pleasing frequencies to my ear, but 4's kick and snare made me think of what the room mics for Billy Jean would have sounded like, and made me think that 4 would sound great as the reverb for an 80's rock or pop kit sort of sound.

      Not sure where your located but here in the US I got some "Sump Pump" 1.5 inch corregated hose for $13 on amazon. 24 foot I think. There's a range to the price I've found but look for sump pump or as you said the pool hose. It has much more of a delay effect. Think if a 20 ms delay w a little feedback. Kinda weird sounding but still cool w compression.

    Lengths of PVC pipe short enough to reasonably fit in the room, connected with U-bends, would probably make the funnel configuration work better. Less sound would bleed through from outside. And if it didn't work (or even if it did) you could use it as a really long didgeridoo!

  • @POPfreakingPUNK
    @POPfreakingPUNK 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Also, what if the mic end of the garden hose was isolated somehow? Like in a separate room, or iso-box of sorts..so theoretically there was no sound penetration through the hose nearest the diaphragm. ALL sound would travel through the house length before hitting the sm57. Then you could blend that in as you would a delay/reverb Aux track. Might be cool. Might not lol. Just spitballing here.

    • @creativesoundlab
      @creativesoundlab 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that would be a cool effect so that you can coil all the hose in there tightly and get a clean delay Sound.

  • @AdamRainStopper

    We have GOT TO stick that shit in front of a vocalist. Hell, even a guitar amp, then re-amp a vocal through it.

    • @creativesoundlab
      @creativesoundlab 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah very true. I think the hardest challenge is the volume in the room. The gain on these 57s was more than if I used a 57 for a room mic 10 feet out. Vocal reamp stands a chance at being loud enough. Eric said he used that 4 inch pipe on Ben Harpers Vocal just by putting the opening by the vocal mic as he sung.

    • @AdamRainStopper
      @AdamRainStopper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd think a condenser would be a bit better suited to picking up the other end of the hose, but it definitely will need some gain when the sound is having to get through the rubber. For a vocal, I'd use the funnel method, although that seemed to be awfully kerrangy, and would need some eq. The pipe "delay" sounds like a good option for a vocal too.

    And we're doing this because......? Have you ever tried putting the mic into a toilet and experimenting with the kinds of sounds various depths of water will give you? Also, I'm told sound travels much farther/better under water than it does through air (That'd be why whales around upper Greenland can hear whales near S. America!), so, maybe try filling the hose(s) with water. Put some kind of barrier over the mic(s) to keep it (them) from getting wet on that end, then fill the other end with the funnel and, once it's full, put one of those old recording diaphragms from the recording devices they used 120 years ago on the end of the funnel that's in the hose. The sound being played into the funnel should cause the diaphragm to vibrate, as it normally would, and that'd make the water react likewise. Hopefully, the mic(s) would be able to pick up that sound.
