    In this fashion photography tutorial, Patrick Hall shares a few different lighting setups that mix natural light with studio lighting techniques. Using the FujiFilm GFX 100, a few different lenses, and a couple Profoto B10 strobes, this how to tutorial explains how you can create high quality photographs with minimal retouching in software like lightroom or photoshop. In fact, all images are edited with Exposure X5's destructive free software.

    • @FStoppers
      @FStoppers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Christopher O'Grady yeah it depends on how big your client is. Large clients often hire you just to take the photos and deliver the raw files and then they edit and process them through their agency or their own in house graphic designer/retoucher. This is preferred since you can act just as the photographer, shoot, deliver the files, and move on to your next job. Smaller clients might want final edits of everything including skin and clothing retouching. You really needs to make a clear description of how much of that is included in the day rate otherwise you will be editing until the moon turns blue. I personally just do a basic raw adjustment of all images and then offer to retouch individual images for a set fee. -P

    From iso.org (About page) "Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), our founders decided to give it the short form iso. Iso is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal. Whatever the country, whatever the language, we are always iso."
    It's a word "iso", not an acronym "I-S-O". Think isometric or isochronous. It would be nice if TH-cam influencers would learn this.

    If anything, the one thing that would put me off of buying the Fuji would be that 'rendering' time (surely due to file size) everytime you make an adjustment. That would drive me insane. Maybe it was because you were using screen capturing too, or maybe it runs smoother in C1 or PS. But I just couldn't put up with that! Also just an FYI Patrick, but your retouching & editing will improve greatly if you throw that mouse in the trash and start using a Wacom. Everytime you make a click, you have to reduce the strength/opacity when a simple (pressure sensitive) brush stroke would accomplish that.

    • @waynedennyphoto
      @waynedennyphoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Matthew Neder A Wacom tablet is a pressure sensitive tablet that you 'draw' on. You use a stylus (like a pen), and the tablet can read how hard you push on it, making it infinitely better for retouching. To be honest, I've been using one for almost 10 years now and haven't used a mouse since. I use it for everyday computer use as well, not just photo editing. Phlearn has some pretty good tutorials on the benefits of using one if you want to see it in action.

The page had drifted a lot over the years, with outside contributors and their political injections, drifting from the original intent of Fstoppers. And I love that you are very clear that the sponsors are paying for this - how many times have we heard recently that Fstoppers is just being paid to promote product? Here, you can see that any claims are true. Images look great, pace was perfect. Nice job!

    What software tools do you use for post processing your images?
    I do image editing work (background removal, ground shadows, airbrushing the skin, etc.) regularly for fashion sellers and companies and recently came across AutoRetouch (autoRetouch - The first end-to-end, automated image processing platform.) I really like their service, even though it's not perfect. They are super cheap (€0.1 per image) and offer PSD export, so I use them mainly for pre-processing and finish the work myself in Photoshop.
    Since you need a huge amount of pictures when you first start AutoRetouch could help you by retouching huge batches at once.

    The problem with youtube fashion photography is that the model is the subject, instead of model being a model to showcase fashion..... that is why most of these photos look soulless and bland, and because of that you have to compensate it with smoke, locations..etc... meanwhile Irvin Penn can make a 1000x better photo with a white background. Because he use the model as a model.

      I can't find the specific one. I bought it at Target a few years ago after halloween and I've used it a ton. It isn't the most powerful fogger for outdoor use (or in the barn like this) but it usually does the job. Many times it's too powerful for indoor use unless you want that overly smokey look. I think I paid $30 for it but it might have been $50 before Halloween? -P

  • @masterolivemedia
    @masterolivemedia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thank you for this tutorial, Patrick. Can you briefly share the pricing structure (no need for numbers) of this shoot? You said "hired for 100 looks" but I'm struggling to understand how that is structured price-wise. Is the client paying a large sum for the shoot, then a second amount for their favorite photos? Or are they paying for everything with the expectation that they may not use all 100 looks? Thank you for all your hard work and knowledge.

    • @FStoppers
      @FStoppers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      masterolivestudio the boutique didn’t pay for this particular shoot since it was more of a collaboration. That being said, I recently did have a brand ask me to photography no less than 100 looks in 8-10 hours for a Black Friday campaign that was botched by another photographer.
      In that shoot, we did far less hero shots like this and more or less designed about 5 small sets on a similar farm ironically. I referred 10 models to them, they picked out and paid for 3. We then rotated girls out as fast as you can think with each girl getting about 3mins per look. Each look had a series of front shots, side shots and back shots. It was an assembly line.
      Since the deadline was so short with Black Friday approaching, they asked for me to just dump all 8000 images taken into a hard drive at the end of the shooting day. Because no retouching or even culling was done on my part, I charged them a day rate of $5000, paid my assistant $500 of that, and charged them $2000 for a 3 year license. So I made $6500 out the door, the client was thrilled with my teams professionalism and quality of images, and they had their in house team prep the images for their website in time for Black Friday.
      Many times the licensing fee can be greater than the day rate depending on the usage and brand but since this was a small regional boutique based out of North Carolina, and because they just had a horrible experience with the first photographer they hired, I set a bargain rate IMO.
      So to answer your question, I wouldn’t necessarily charge more for 10 looks or 100 looks since I’d just charge a day rate on the shooting regardless. The licensing is where you can adjust that fee. If they need rights to 1000 images, then that will be more than 10 images. Usage as in billboards, magazines, web, tv, point of sale, etc etc also increases the fee as does length of time and exclusivity. For the shoot referenced, I did a 3 year exclusive license for $2k but these images were very particular to these clothes they were shipping in from China and the style was specific to their brand. I don’t think they would be worth much to anyone else.
      I hope that helps. If this sort of thing interests you, I’d highly recommend checking out Monte Isom’s tutorial in the Fstoppers store. His Facebook group is worth the price of that tutorial on its own . The stories and rates I’ve seen photographers quote and secure through that resource is insane and makes me feel like the business of photography is alive and well! -P

    • @masterolivemedia
      @masterolivemedia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FStoppers Wow, just wow. Thank you for taking the time to craft this in-depth response, this was truly helpful. My take away from this is that it seems like you have to simply know your production value, and allow the client to communicate what they want, then be able to offer a simple flat rate that (that covers your costs and profit obviously) works for both parties. It seems like at this level (in reference to this video and your response) these types of clients literally don't have the time to think about line items or spend the time making package decisions. I appreciate the response and if what you recommend is anything akin to this type of interaction I'm totally checking it out, I've been a long time lurker too busy to get involved but I'll give it a shot. Thanks! -Andre

    • @FStoppers
      @FStoppers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      masterolivestudio oh don’t get me wrong, you still may need line items if the shoot is complex enough. Many times photographers are required to cast models, deal with catering, you might want a digital tech, multiple assistants, you might have to rent some gear, travel, scout, pay for a shooting location, get permits, etc etc. All those things still need to be outlined in a proposal and invoice but in my last example it was just a lot easier than that with the company taking on most of those responsibilities. I do like to make things simple for myself but I’m honestly not shooting at that $30-50k (or higher) level that often requires tons of line items. Day rate and license, maybe some cash for my assistant(s), boom done! -P

    I worked in a showroom where I had to photograph samples to put into a library - I used a simple Canon point-and-shoot or an iPhone / iPad, and it *drove me nuts* when the colors weren't matching the actual sample - I'm not a photographer. All this editing that you're doing - I know lighting is very important - but aren't you changing the garment's colors too, unintentionally?

    Isn't that the wrong way round? The whites are the blown out parts, and the highlights are the broght bit not blown out areas.
    So the histogram goes: blacks-shadows-mid tones-highlights-whites

    • @FStoppers
      @FStoppers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a commonly misunderstood principle. The highlights are the absolute brightest, right most part of the histogram. If you have a sky that looks clipped, the highlights slider will bring back more detail than the white slider. The white slider usually acts almost as a brightness slider and in Photoshop Camera Raw, that's exactly what it does.
      Here is a good article that explains it better than I probably can: improvephotography.com/29251/difference-highlights-whites-sliders-lightroom/

    I think that there should have been more of a focus on accurate color earlier in the shoot; with this being for a clothing company (whether you are shooting for a website, Instagram, or a catalog, it is to be put in front of paying customers who will buy something or return something because of the color) it is literally the work where color accuracy is most needed and should not be done by eye or feel. 25:00-26:00
