Per a scryfall search for "year=2023" and the setting "unique prints", there were 9,179 distinct magic cards printed this year. That would be a rate of 1 card every 3,436 seconds, or just over one card per hour.
For anyone wondering: they used "++ date=2023" which yields every unique version of every card printed this year. HOWEVER that's actually too low as it doesn't include planes or arena only cards. So you actually need to make sure you either aren't logged in to scryfall or have your search settings set to show everything and use "++ date=2023 -t:token". The last bit excludes tokens, of which there were about 400. Brings our new total to 10360, which is 1 card every 50 minutes 44.02 seconds
@@cameronhall6825 1/2 of those 9k are fancy borders or stretchy art, etc, with 1/4 being alternate arts. Still, that's well over 1k cards which are mostly new designs, so your point still stands.
In a related note, there were 405 Commanders printed for the first time in 2023, meaning we've gotten an average of around 1.109 new Commanders each day.
51:22 The time between WOE and LCI isn't that much different form how Standard sets have always been. The difficulty from processing is having other things you need to keep track of being heavily invested in in the game. The frequency of Standard sets hasn't shot up.
I understand choosing not to do LCI nicknames given the time constraints. That said, I will throw out my favorite among the ones I prepped, for Amalia Benavides Aguirre, "Conquistadora the Explorer."
For me, it will forever be "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" (as in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aguirre,_the_Wrath_of_God ). Funny how she does, indeed Wrath of God.
Question: what was the first release this year? Panel: "well Midnight Vow came out before the holiday" Me: "oh this is going to be a loooongggg episode"
I mean, personally I would watch one of your Nickname episodes however great the time lag, but I entirely understand why you had to take that decision. See you for the next one, and keep doing the good work!
I really hope in the next Un- product they add a "Foil" or mana symbol with the reminder text "{F} is mana from a Foil source", if only because then scryfall will need a new useless symbol
NGL, this has been my favorite Stump The Experts/Panel episode. Listening to Nelly and Wheeler struggle to get the cards right is actually novel. Good job, James!
I am midly saddened that there will be no Nicknames Episode for LCI. I will have to singularly push Capa-Rock-Your-Sunborn and Anim Pa-Call-An-Ambulance
First time that I have seen Wheeler not having actual perfect encyclopedic knowledge of Magic. 😮 Jokes aside, would love to have more episodes like this, perhaps with other periods/years of Magic’s history? I must also agree that they should pump the breaks, at least a bit, the pace for new things has just gotten a tad too much.
“How are we feeling about number two? You wanna take a stab or do you want some hints?” “I’m definitely feeling like number two right now.” “I’d like to get stabbed right now.”
theres a 7ph player who plays with a the dark blood moon that is manually white bordered, making it look exactly the same as a chronicles blood moon its such a powermove

sweet jesus, they better be paying those poor poor designers overtime

That is just nuts on the amount of cards. Only a computer could keep up with this amount.
Truly that homunculus is the premier Cameron pilot of the format
Love this comment

20:13 "Ooh Legolas use your quick reflexes to ruin legacy!" is for some reason the funniest thing ive heard in like a month
Legacy had it coming anyway.
Cameron's tiny homunculus sounds like it needs a hug.
For the record, I for one would listen to a Warhammer podcast hosted by Cam.
The little men crapshot but the full version
I also would listen to that.
Yes, me too. Cameron has a great voice and interesting insights.

My favorite one I came up with was, for Poetic Ingenuity, "omg they were *poemmates*"
@@Alyssa_Swift They were poemmates...
@@kevinwestermann1001that’s GOTTA be intentional
TBH, when Twitch Chat came up with "For the love of God, Monstrousaur", that was the perfect summation of what a LCI Nickname ep would have been.

stump the panel is my favorite recurring variant of ttc

Wheeler fuming over card prices is the funniest shit I've seen in months, thank you for that.
Not a Cam episode without him wanging his elbow on the mic stand.
Funny how 3 of the 5 best limited commons are 3 mana creatures that create a token
Modern limited is all about those rectangles, baby! Getting multiple cards for your card *and* they affect the board? 😘👌
This was an incredibly fun watch/listen. Really good format and engaging to pause and guess along to. Hope this becomes a new year's tradition!
Vito has you sacrifice any Permanent, not just creature. That includes lands and all the various artifact tokens that sacrifice themselves.
Probably why it doesn't draw a card. Treasures by themselves trigger it.
Immediately after James drops the first question, Cameron's eyes go 👀 with panic. 😂😂😂
[00:02:00] Oh, Cameron, I'm enjoying every second of this with unabashed mirth.
According to Gavin's article/video about the Pauper ban, Tithing Blade is seeing Pauper play!
NGL, this has been my favorite Stump The Experts/Panel episode. Listening to Nelly and Wheeler struggle to get the cards right is actually novel. Good job, James!
I nailed the release schedule and Wheeler, the walking encyclopedia of MTG knowledge, didn't??? I AM THE SMARTEST PERSON ALIVE!!!!! lmao
Different metrics...
5:03 WOW!
Dang it! This was the first time in a long time I had an idea for a nickname for a card.
wheeler didnt say the thinggg AHHHH
great episode tho
thank goodness i wasn't the only one being driven crazy by it

Cameron with the Omberguy B Harrison predict
Please. How do we make that happen.
is that real about Card Kingdom!!!!????? Now I want to visit for my next vacay
👏 great name for round 2 James!
Delightful as always!
It sets a good starting point for this show, that the guys don't realize the Innistrad was in 2021 and completely forgot DMU and BRO 🥴
I see you Cameron and Wheeler, singing Steven Universe during the Beluna bit.
Wheeler going "Magic sucks" after hearing The Great Henge is 54 bucks is how I feel all the time 😅
First time that I have seen Wheeler not having actual perfect encyclopedic knowledge of Magic. 😮

This was some good stumping!
Engagement
I liked this version a lot more, it was easier for me to play/follow along due to only focusing on the recent sets.
The great henge is also played in pioneer in green devotion
5:07 JFC THE BURN
Tnemegagne
Jsyk, All Will Be One came out on February 3rd, not the 10th. I think you were looking Year of the Rabbit, which is the next set up on Scryfall.
Even just the first bit hurt my brain. Well done.
Also Cam please do a Warhammer podcast!
No worries, fam. We can make up the nicknames. :D
Ironic to have a lightning round and have all direct damage spells, but have none of them actually be lightning-based magic.
stump the experts idea: canadian highlander, but you have a persistent "My First Tome" effect (but for rules text)
Hahaha ben "we barely fuck offfff" so good
love the tiny steven universe reference
I'm a little surprised that I got the collector's information trivia and they didn't. Maybe I pay too much attention to the irrelevant stuff.
Beluna + 2 Adventure copy spells = a lot of cards no matter what.
I forgot ONE was this year sweet jesus.
these are always fun, god theres a lot of magic nowadays
Big FNM Club 7 fan here
Further engagement
“How are we feeling about number two? You wanna take a stab or do you want some hints?”
“I’m definitely feeling like number two right now.”
“I’d like to get stabbed right now.”

its such a powermove
I was prepared to jump on the mistakes for engagement, but then they caught them. So I guess I can't comment.
...wait.
How specifically does a Swamp qualify as basic, Cam?

That first round … yikes. TIMESPIRAL REMASTERED? Come on
Time for your backache medicine 😉
