But sb, that's impressive as well. I know he's not short so in my mind he's not that fast.. But I guess timing is also important, when to steal and when not too.
I really need to learn the acronyms lol, I see them and have no idea lol
We'll never know how often all of this manufactured commotion on the base-paths proved, in the moment, so disruptive to the rhythm and/or focus of the batter at the plate that in terms of overall offensive production , stealing attempts even if "successful" were costly.
That is why stealing bases merely for the sake of it(to pad one's personal "stats", for example) is not always a good thing. A judicious approach to this aspect of the game should be encouraged not the selfish one.

Ohtani's current performance levels are Ruthian...and if he continues to do that for 3-4 more seasons and he pitches like he did the last 3-4 years, I'm pretty confident he'll be generally considered the best player in major league history.

He always wants to win the game more than he wants to set a record.

@@marklipson
Shohei believes that team championships are more important than his own performance and that the ultimate goal of baseball is for the team to win.
This viewpoint is probably strongly influenced by his upbringing in high school in Japan, where his goal was to win the Koshien National High School Baseball Tournament every year.
The Koshien Tournament is a national tournament for high school students that has been held for about 100 years. Every year, approximately 3,500 schools from all 47 prefectures of Japan participate in the tournament, and the top high school in the country is decided at the Koshien Tournament by about 50 schools selected after winning their respective regional tournaments.
The last school remaining in the tournament will be crowned the number one high school in Japan.
High school students have only three chances to compete in the tournament during their three years in school.
And because it is a tournament, no matter how strong the school or how talented the players are, if they lose just one game, they will be eliminated, and their three years of hard work will be lost in a single game.
No matter how good pitcher is or how strong hitters are, if they lose by a single run, they are eliminated from the tournament and everything ends there.
This is the kind of experience they gain in high school, so rather than hitting a single home run by theirselves, they need the entire team to work together to score one more run than the other team to win the game, and the whole team must work together to score runs and play baseball to increase the probability of winning.
The teamwork-oriented mindset that one's own performance is meaningless if the team does not win is naturally fostered.
Shohei still says and acts as if his individual performance is meaningless in baseball if the team does not win the championship, probably because of his experience during his high school baseball days in Japan.
Perhaps it is because he values championships more than his own individual results that he is able to achieve results without being nervous about his unprecedented personal record attempts.
@brianchar-bow3273 Well, that was a superb explanation about how Japanese culture, values, work ethic and the high school championship format instilled team spirit in Ohtani. Now, if I can just figured out where he got the genetics of a young Greek god AND how he learned how to pitch, run the bases and hit a baseball better than 99.999% of everyone who ever lived...!!! 😗 THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS.

That was a bomb. As good a hitter as Judge is there's something about a nice lefty swing. Plus obviously comes off his bat much harder than Judge (higher exit velo), and hits it farther. Just the sound of the ball off Ohtani's bat is unlike any other. A legend of baseball already.
What's funny is, Ohtani is a right hand person. He pitches on right hand, but he swings the bat with his main hand as the leading swing. It makes sense if you think of it like a swordsman is swinging with his leading dominant hand.
There is something about a left handed hitter that just looks good when they do it. Griffey, Williams, even Bonds. Some lefties just have the sweetest swings. It looks effortless for some reason.
@@Alucard400 You're right about that. Playing hockey I'm right handed but shoot left. It makes sense. But in baseball I was raised to throw right and bat right. I'm back into baseball because of this guy.
And he is a pitcher
Yes, many commentators and even Manager Dave Roberts say there's a sound to Ohtani's contact with a baseball that's unlike anyone else. As for this HR, it was described as 402 ft, but that can't be right. I heard two former MLB players after the game saying that shot into the second deck was a lot more than 402 ft. Something about Statcast is very unreliable.

Shohei is doing a more flashy bat flip than usual.
Saw the Mets broadcaster trying to make a case for Lindor as mvp, they should mention Ohtani leads Lindor in 13 offensive cetegories, and Shohei Ohtani leads the NL in Runs RBIs Extra base hits WAR OPS Slugging and HRs
Lindor was awful in the 1st half, he did'nt even make the All Star, and Defense in MLB means very little (makes 1 or 2 plays a game) It's not like the NBA were they play both sides equal, but even that no defense in basketball wins an MVP. Also In the NFL no defensive player wins MVP, in all sporst they look at offense.
When Lindor gets close to 50/50 “see me”!

You can still get his rookie cards at decent prices. This dude could be the goat someday...
The homerun cost Ohtani a chance to steal a base, which is why going 50-50 is so tough. In this crucial moment, instead of focusing on hitting, Ohtani spent time practicing his pitching and threw at 150 km/h. 50-50-150.
When the announcers said Ohtani was due for a home run,
my reaction was: "Don't jinx him"
but Ohtani proceeds to hit a home run.
