I just wanted to mention that after some research- my father and I both respect this music video and understand the meaning behind the music. I believe that after we go back and watch her other music videos, we will have a better understanding of what is going on here. This video was requested so much and so I decided to do this one first because I had no idea who this artist even was beforehand. Seeing her in this with no context or story of how she got here threw us off (as you can see). So, I apologize if any of this video was offensive toward her and her creative team. This was an amazing piece of work and a deep meaningful song. PS- My father says the song sounds "happy"- in which he means the musical portion. We know the lyrics and the video itself are quite the opposite. Thank you everyone for watching!
I agree with this comment. Honestly, much of the laughing was because the video was so unexpected. We had no idea what we were getting into, so you can imagine the constant surprise. I will admit my comments on her dancing were not very clear. I think it is obvious she is a very good dancer. The choreography here was designed to communicate a feeling, and I believe she absolutely nailed it. I find it interesting that many artists are connecting their music videos as if they exist in the same universe. I would have never expected this trend. But with that in mind- it is like we were invited to give our thoughts on the Marvel Universe and we started with Infinity War. Amazing film- but without any context, we would be confused for much of the movie. It would be impossible to have the emotional connection the diehard fans have watching it. On a smaller scale, that is what we were experiencing here because we started with The Void and went in blind. I do think we were very complimentary. There was a lot to like- and I think the song is catchy. I believe the meaning is deep and what she is trying to say is important. I apologize to any fans if this came across as disrespectful in any way. I believe if you were to watch realizing why we were laughing, you might find we had great respect for the MV and were blown away with the creativity. We found a lot to like.
I Stan her so much and I've just got to say I lived your video, I can't wait to see you watch the rest esp out of order, it's fun that way. Like listening to an album on shuffle 😌
You should def watch every Cry Baby mvs (IN ORDER) then watch her movie K-12 then Portals DEATH then VOID because otherwise it doesn't make sense (for new people)!
I still cant believe that she didn't win the VMA for the best visual effects. Like she's the only one who makes those incredible effects and creative stories
the Taylor swift fans are out of control bro 😭😭 once I saw Taylor swift and Mel in the same nomination, I knew she wasn’t gonna win even tho she should’ve.
I think it's best to watch Melanie's discography in the correct order because she tells a story which can be confusing to understand if you start in the middle. Her art is pretty surreal. Crybaby album is the starter of this story. I highly recommend you check out the MVs she did for that album.
Agree, also its best to learn the meanings of the songs by listening to the lyrics or searching it up cuz yall Said the mv and song didnt quite match when it actually did.
@@PixelTheExtraTerrestrial If you watch the video he mentioned several times that he didn't understand the story in the mv. My comment was about that, not about his professional view.
she can dance, but her friend actually made this choreography. in my opinion it really matches the song, and music video, cause you know the song is about anxiety, and when you’re having an anxiety attack. you start to breathe heavy, and shake. feel dizzy. its all so perfect, but again we all have opinions and i respect yalls opinion!
I agree- I didn’t mean to make it sound like this was a simple dance. Watching it again, I can see how intricate and intentional her dance moves are. She did a great job communicating through her movements.
Melanie has been writing, self-directing and co-editiong all her MVs, Performances, etc since the beginning of her career (even wrote and directed a feature length film for her sophomore album titled “K-12”). She's quite passionate about visual art and used to be a photographer in high school before making music. This song is from her 3rd studio album called PORTALS; the final part of the “Crybaby” trilogy! Crybaby is this character/alter-ego she has created from whose perspective melanie tells a story throughout her albums. PORTALS depicts that crybaby has died now and reincarnated into a new vessel as she goes through the different stages of afterlife.
btw some of these realms and environments you saw in the MV are not fully green screen but actual sets designed by melanie and put together by the production team at dojohouse. 11:38 yeah it's all camera work as seen in a BTS video where she's dressed in the pink creature look while in a black room crawling towards the camera as it spins continuously while attached to a crane thingy
Thank you for that explanation my 12 yr old is so into her but the visuals for me are not my jam I respect the artistry music is alright not so bad the artistry though not exactly for me but I am allowing my daughter to explore her own things she likes as in music vs her being just influenced by me which I have amazing music taste though🤷🏻♀️ 🤣
Melanie is a great rabbit hole to dive into. She creates the concept and directs all of her MVs, and they are all connected between them telling one big story. This song is about mental health struggle and you can see in the MV that she's inside her own body and the intrusive thoughts and self criticism (represented by many forms, including a incubation of bad thoughts inside her) are bringing her down and trying to harm her. And she tries to scape and get rid of them but they keep coming back till the end. Her own eyes are staring and judging her. She is herself inside her heart, but when she's out she goes straight to her mind which is flashing those bad thoughts...
As someone who has been a long time fan of Melanie since her first album it’s hilarious to see two people who’ve NEVER SEEN ANY OF her content or music and not know what to expect, like the utter shock from the very first moment had me cackling, I was like “oooooh buckle up buddy”
Melanie Martinez is my all time favorite artist. She is so special in my heart because she talks about sensitive things most artists won’t. Shes not afraid to show her true self in every piece of work she puts out. VOID is my #1 favorite song and I think its worth noting she self wrote and produced this song on her own, but also directed this music video along with most (if not all) of her other music videos. Shes a very visual artist and has creative design behind everything!!
In this song its acualy not meant to be happy. melanie directly said this song was about anxiety, so it makes sense why theres so many things on the mv because it's supposed to represent anxiety. As a person who has anxiety, melanie made the lyrics so great on anxiety. And what i love about melanies film directing is you cant tell which are props or which are cgi.
Fan fact, she directed and produced this video. Like she does to most of her videos. You guys should do more of her. Plus to understand Melanie's videos, you need to know the whole story from the Cry baby album. Its why this may not make sense... lol
I LOVE Melanie, she is just so quirky and different from everyone else! If you are interested, her first album CryBaby has a music video for every single song on the standard edition. You'd want to watch them in order. Her second album, K-12 shows Crybaby going through school, there is a full film on TH-cam (the music videos are part of the movie). This music video is from her third album Portals. It's the afterlife of the character. We are hoping for a film but so far this and "Death" are the only music videos.
@@Idragthesehoes it's not about her being different, it's about the phrasing Bjork kinda does the same thing she does rn lmao, not every artist is the exact same except for her and speaking as someone who used to be a Mel fan, her fandom has a raging superiority complex holy fuck side note that mel DOES feel extremely corporate, is it PURELY coincidental that she released Portals while the whole "dark fairy/fairycore" aesthetic began to really get popular, while sweet lolita was dying out? food for thought. at the end of the day, she's a pretty mainstream pop artist who has regulations, an image, and rules to follow under a label. she's not doing anything SUPER out of line, because she would be dropped. her songs about serious topics feel very sanitized and disingenuous tbh, idk how yall get ur rocks off saying that she writes about serious topics when she misses the mark on a lot of her songs. i don't like judging people for their tastes and it's generally a shitty thing to do, but "a million men" was irredeemably atrocious. don't let her visuals distract you from her self-aggrandizing and shallow lyrics.
I’ve personally never seen a better visual representation of what it feels like to have your own head be your worst enemy. I think her whole album concept and the new look is supposed to represent the feeling of not being your body and wanting to crawl outside of yourself and be who you really are
Welcome to the Melanie universe! VOID is so amazing! It’s about anxiety and self doubt as well as what happens when you die! My recommendation is to start the journey where it all started as this is a trilogy, so the order is Crybaby (videos for every song), K-12 (movie available on TH-cam) then Portals (only death and VOID MVs out for now)! Feel free to ask the fans any questions! Have fun!
I heard so many stories about what this means that I I dont think anyone really knows. All I know is eyes are being used alot symbolically in forms of media and among rich and famous. Maybe she's part of the cult as well. 🔺️ 👁
Dude, this is definitely the best reaction of this MV I've ever seen. I laughed out loud when you got shocked with her dancing. Your expressions made me choke when I was drinking my juice. 😂😂😂
I honestly look so deep into her music videos, The song is really about anxiety and suicidal thoughts, The eye represents how anxiety watches her closely. the song in general is her trying to escape from those empty thoughts
If you didn't know already this song is about anxiety and what is feels like, so thats why it sounds happy but really isn't. (I'm a big fan of Melanie lol)
So this pitch meeting was probably made by Melanie walking in the room showing a PowerPoint presentation on how she wants her video. Her labels Jaw on the floor and then them allowing her because she always been a visual artist and in control of almost every part of her visuals down to costume and hair. She’s very vocal about it.
Haha I knew that this would be a crazy one without context, Melanie is a highly conceptual artist, her albums always stick to a very consistent theme, and she really loves to combine dark and taboo topics with a cutesy aesthetic. Portals is all about death and rebirth and she sticks to this alien/fae look the whole time. My favorite album from her is K-12, there are a ton of great songs, and they all have music videos since it’s a visual album with a movie. My personal fav is Show & Tell where she’s a dancing marionette
About your eyeball theory, the eyeball does not represent all eyes on her, she has a song called Show and Tell for that. The reason why there is an eyeball is because she has insecurity escaping her body. And all the other replicas of her are more insecurities attacking her. Hope this helps
A lot of Melanie's sets are actual places. The bugs is a metaphpr for her killing her bad thoughts, as roses sprought out of the worm is her bringing the better thoughts to kill the bad ones with them. When she shot herself it symbolizes her wanted to suicide but the butterflies are a metaphor for her escaping from the suicidal thoughts
I LOVE how you said its giving video games vibe bcs she just drop video of tunnel vision song where she is a character of game or just is at game (i dont know how say it). And for earthlings its so crazy theory. Like Mel, is everything just a game??
Melanie Martinez is one of the most creative artists I’ve ever listened to! It pleased me to see you react to her, but I definitely could tell you guys had noooo idea what was happening🤣 but what got me too is when I first saw the frame of her shooting herself and seeing the moths come out striked me too but the symbolism was that the intrusive thoughts almost won but with moths coming out instead of blood, it goes to show she overcame that dark thought and was able to regain control.❤ And I agree it’s very bold to put that out there but the way she portrayed it was very meaningful✨ I would love to see you react to more videos of her
it's genuinely so cool to hear your opinions on the song and video! her sonority is always lovely and cute, but the lyrics are dark as hell! love it there!
The fact she has scars from that music video and work her but off doing concerts from may30 all the way to January I think while also filming music videos and making a perfume as well as merch just for her fans ( like me) is very surprising, she has helped me throughout my whole elementary and middle school years I’m so glad I know her her songs have so many deep meanings that it makes u shed a tear. Listen to her songs or MVs and you will understand. It’s like a book but with song! I’m so glad you guys listened to her ❤
Mel has a very distinct story line and if you listens to all of her amazing songs of crybaby and watched the videos and listens to k-12 and watched movie you would 100% understand more of the story line! I can see why and how you would think it it’s weird!
You really should start reacting to her discography in order. Becausw she tells a story about her character Crybaby. In her first album “Crybaby” she tells us about Crybaby’s traumatic childhood with drvgs and family issues, in her second album “K-12” she talks about Crybaby’s schoollife in a narcissist school (she also made a film of the album you should watch it) in the end she escape k-12 and enters a portal that lead her to the last album “Portals”, in portals, Crybaby dies and reincarnates to a pink four eyed creature that has to experience life( as the first track is “Death” and the last “Womb”). She also made a ep “After school ep” it has Nothing to do with Crybaby’s storyline but Its a really good ep. I hope this helps, lots of love and blessings🤍
The girl at the beginning before the creature came out of the heart, her name is Crybaby. Her first album CRYBABY explains the characters childhood. Her other album is the characters school this albums name is K-12. The song your listening to is from her last album PORTALS the character got reborn into this nymph/fae being. Melanie says the reborn characters name is The Creature. Melanie talks about serious topics and wants to put them out there. As you may have noticed Mel has a very unique type of style and that's why her fans love her. You may want check her album CRYBABY or the DEATH music video if you havent already. The song DEATH was the first track to album PORTALS, VOID is the second track. The song VOID is about anxiety. Melanie puts a happy beat to sad songs to her lyrics a lot of the times. When she says "I hate who I was before" she's talking about her past self Crybaby. Like I said you should watch the music videos in order to understand. Also her songs have a lot of Metaphors. The VOID is her mind and she's trying to escape the bad thoughts in her mind. You may not have heard her songs because she's not so mainstream. Also Mel goes out like this. Omg I have so much to say but that would take years 😫.
Melanie has said that every song she writes has at least three different meanings. I imagine her videos try to capture as many of them as possible too.
Things you should know more about Melanie Martinez, she's a Director, Scriptwriter, Photographer, Actress, Singer, Dancer, Songwriter, Designer, Aerial Hoop Artist, Producer, Musician,Model,World Preacher etc more and INTROVERT
You guys should definitely react to crybaby and things, her music is honestly amazing and her creativity and way with words are out of the ordinary. Love her, thanks for reacting to void! Such an amazing song. 💞
The part with the bugs and he’s like “so I had a dream and I walked into a room and there was a bug and then I turned around and THERE WAS A BIGGER BUG and then I looked over AND THERE WAS A GODZILLA SIZED BUG” had me cackling lmaooooooo
Yay!! So glad youre finally inteoduced to her cant wait to see your journey discovering her! All her albums tell stories and struggles with a different parts of life ❤ she most definitely is orginal 😅😂
you were correct about the rotating camera for the scene where the cave is spinning!! there are usually some behind the scenes shots or very short videos to show some work on how she creates her music videos, or at least the most for void. she was dropped onto her knees using pulleys connecting her to the ceiling for the "kneeling on a metal grater" line after she shot herself!!
You should react to her Death video! It’s a little less crazy than this one, but still very fantastical. She is known for her music videos and the incredibly complex stories they tell!
For 11:01 she was stationary the whole time while they rotated the camera then added the movements in to make it look like she was moving in post. Think they did it that a lot for that scene especially when you look at 8:42 looked like she was sliding on the floor 😂
Funfact for you!, the spinning effect is actually via a camera spin not visual effects edited. This was shown in an instagram video of the void music video production.! 🙃❤️
The music video was unique, original, creative, and meaningful, but weird and crazy in a positive way. This is engaging for me as it was rare to see unique music videos. It was nice as it was detailed and polished. Based on this reaction video, I feel like I'm interested in watching multiple times the original video. I'm not biased, but how this music video did not get award? I also watched Taylor Swift's VMA of 2023, It was full of drama and cavities. Thanks to this Video reaction. I hope more people can appreciate unique projects. The video editor of this music video knows what is art and effort.
OMG MELANIE IS MY NUMBER 1 FAVORITE ARTIST!!! HAHAHA I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS!!! I CAN TELL YALL ARE SO CONFUSED.. MELANIE IN ALL OF HER ALBUMS TELLS A STORY… YALL SHOULD CHECK IT OUT AND IT WILL MAKE MORE SENSE ❤
All her albums make like a story and this is like the newest story and from what I gathered it's kind of like the afterlife so it is kind of going to be confusing for you cuz you didn't watch the other ones but so far I love you guys this reactions
I think starting with “Portals” (3rd Album) is very very confusing for people who don’t know her or her music. You kinda have to go from the very start to understand the story and visual as well as character development
I would recommend starting from the beginning. Melanie tells a long story and it tends to be confusing if you start near the ending of the story. Void is also about the anxiety of being judged by people around you for your looks + changing how you look due to judgment.
This song is about anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and being self-critical, so that explains a lot of the visuals. It also has a secondary meaning being a representation of the second stage of being reborn. The album Portals is about how people have experienced rebirth and reincarnation through hypnotherapy; specifically it is a story of the spiritual journey of Melanie's character Crybaby.
Melanie Martinez is one of my favorite artists. One thing I think you might have missed is that the giant worm looks a little (a lot) phallic. I believe it’s symbolic of the male gaze or appealing to men. She kills the worm and flowers sprout out which I think means that once she stopped trying to be attractive for men she blossomed.
You should react to their new mv 'Tunnel Vision' since you made a comment about the video game style !! Also enjoyed seeing an out of context reaction to a song that is so deep, meaningful and sad but hopeful to me :)

And i am so sorry for my english. I am not so good yet.. sorry xD 💕
this video was so good! you should do death next, but theres a whole story starting from her first album 💕
I love Melanie Martinez so much and like the way you guys reacted is so much good
Melanie Martinez is one of the most creative artists I’ve ever listened to! It pleased me to see you react to her, but I definitely could tell you guys had noooo idea what was happening🤣 but what got me too is when I first saw the frame of her shooting herself and seeing the moths come out striked me too but the symbolism was that the intrusive thoughts almost won but with moths coming out instead of blood, it goes to show she overcame that dark thought and was able to regain control.❤ And I agree it’s very bold to put that out there but the way she portrayed it was very meaningful✨ I would love to see you react to more videos of her
I agree! The creativity is amazing!! I have massive respect for her. Can’t wait to do more! Thank you!
Just to help you understand, she made a film where the character supposedly dies (we don't see her dying), and now she's in the afterlife
No need to apologize. Glad to see her videos in one of your reviews never been to this channel before. Melanie brought me to you guys!
it's genuinely so cool to hear your opinions on the song and video! her sonority is always lovely and cute, but the lyrics are dark as hell! love it there!
React to her k-12 film!! It’s so good, it has all of the music videos from her album K-12 with extra actual scenes to make it a movie.
I can't wait to check it out!!
I’m so glad you guys listened to her ❤
I think Melanie really portrayed the feeling anxiety really well I love Melanie with my whole heart
MM is taking us back to the golden age of 90’s music videos. But updated. It’s stunning and I’m here for it.
These guys need to read one book or two about semiotics and hermeneutics.
how does this masterpiece lost to anti-hero 😭
Melanie has said that every song she writes has at least three different meanings. I imagine her videos try to capture as many of them as possible too.
y'all should do the whole trilogy plus her extras like bittersweet tragedy, gingerbread man, playdate, teddy bear, and the after school ep
12:44 It’s an earthworm don’t worry😭 also they’re in crybabys (her character in the past) body because portals is showing the afterlife of crybaby
I don’t remember what I got on TH-cam for but I stopped what I was doing to watch this. Thank you both for sharing!!
LOL, glad you enjoyed it! I hope you remembered what you got on TH-cam for afterwards!
The organic lives in the MV are mostly, if not all, detrivores. Recyclers of death. And that is the concept of the album.
“It sounds way to happy, for it to be so tragic.” …idk why but this quote kinda resonated inside of me for some reason. 9:08
This was such a good and funny video to watch as a Melanie fan and understanding the video watching y’all so confused was hilarious
Melanie Martinez disturbs the comforted, and comforts the disturbed
You should react to her Death video! It’s a little less crazy than this one, but still very fantastical. She is known for her music videos and the incredibly complex stories they tell!
Its like watching two Christian men trying to laugh off a sëx scene in a movie cause its making them feel uncomfortable things 😂😂😂
You NEEEEED to watch all her music in order cuz it tells a whole story and would be very confusing just watching them randomly
For 11:01 she was stationary the whole time while they rotated the camera then added the movements in to make it look like she was moving in post. Think they did it that a lot for that scene especially when you look at 8:42 looked like she was sliding on the floor 😂
Y’all need to react to the DEATH music video by Melanie Martinez and that will maybe explain things more. It’s also such a great video
The video editor of this music video knows what is art and effort.
the girls who get it, get it. the girls who don’t, don’t.
"its like "everyone's staring at me, *im on display."."
Show and tell, *im on display* for all you to see.
All her lyrics and videos have deep meanings, you really have to pay attention and definitely be open minded
It sounds way to happy for it to be so tragic literally Melanie’s vibe 😂
OMG MELANIE IS MY NUMBER 1 FAVORITE ARTIST!!! HAHAHA I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS!!! I CAN TELL YALL ARE SO CONFUSED.. MELANIE IN ALL OF HER ALBUMS TELLS A STORY… YALL SHOULD CHECK IT OUT AND IT WILL MAKE MORE SENSE ❤
I love Melanie. She’s so unique
as an earthling its so funny seeing people new to mel seeing her videos and being so confused 😭😭😭
The throwing up in the beginning was her releasing her “rotten things left in her”
He needs to know the story of crybaby
She performed in those prosthetics and the wig the whole tour!
more melanie plzzz
Can't wait to do more! This was crazy!
Loved this reaction. I hope you guys to ract to DEATH from the same album.
Wanna see more. Thank you!!
8:49
Them: I am so confused rn...
Me: This is Melanie Martinez, boys. Live with it lmao
99% yapping 1% listening 💀😭
To answer on your question or she can dance, make sure to watch "The bakery" it also is edited a lot😊
The pink thing at the end of the video is her school in k-12 🙃
Its not its just her cranium
They need to see Mad Hatter 😂❤
It’s fun to see people react to mel for the first time lol
Melanie Martinez is one of my favorite artists. One thing I think you might have missed is that the giant worm looks a little (a lot) phallic. I believe it’s symbolic of the male gaze or appealing to men. She kills the worm and flowers sprout out which I think means that once she stopped trying to be attractive for men she blossomed.
i honestly feel like the song tone matches the video. it’s bleak, honest, and feels like being tormented
Melanie said that it was alot of stunt work and she has brusies from it void is a awesome music vifeo ❤
She should paint the bruises onto the nymph/alien costume
the scene in the cave where the camera is spinning is actually just a rotating camera and she was just on a giant green screen. bts vids were released
the song is also about looking internally at yourself. also about depression and anxiety
You should react to their new mv 'Tunnel Vision' since you made a comment about the video game style !! Also enjoyed seeing an out of context reaction to a song that is so deep, meaningful and sad but hopeful to me :)
The song is about her anxiety
And some how taylor swift won the best visual effects award…
6:11 just wait till they see tunnel vision lol
Did you notice the constant lightning is meant to look like neurons firing and going off in your brain to symbolize overthinking and anxiety
i love yall so much💗
After watching this I love this song even more ❤😮
