Irony that the Broadcasting Act which destroyed any sense of the regional areas was part of the same white paper that also stated there should be 'more regional emphasis'
This is about right, Channel 5 65-70% of population to be launch in 1993, but Channel 5 didnt start until 4 years later, due to video equipment retune. but having a 6th Channel on the old UHF Analogue tv service, would be impossiable as there were no room on the UHF Band.
@the Oddcast It was more than likely a piece of library music, IBA also used a jingle shared by a video company for a while. Although their early 80's jingle was composed for them I believe.
'ITV is to be renamed "Channel 3" with stronger emphasis on its regional characteristics...'
If only...

The IBA jingle at the start was used by Granada in 1990, albeit higher in pitch.
In some areas, a sixth channel was introduced, but there was little space. I do remember watching SIX TV Oxford when camping in the area.

There's one more like this to come. Don't know when though.
Interesting that Channel 5 was on the cards in 1988.......
It's funny that it was considered because in the end, the complete opposite happened.
so we would have had a 6th channel
