Restrictions on music packages imposed by European Union regulators at the time prevented the utilization of the entire 1995 graphics package from Hearst Broadcasting (including the Gari Media news package known as Image News (or package A)) from being used by Granada during the period between October 1998 and shortly after the September 11 attacks. Sky Television used music packages from Gari Media between 1989 and 2000 and was the only UK broadcaster that was legally allowed to do so.

Sad to see Tony Morris on this.
Also Lucy Meacock is a national treasure. It feels like she's had her job almost as long as the Queen has

Hi, great to see. Just one big omission, at about 14 seconds the main theme for at least 10 years, Alison Gross by Steeleye Span, well Francis Monkmans synthesised version!

Please explain more and provide links please . Francis Monkman of Sky and the composer of the great theme from The Long Good Friday. Scared the pants out of George Harrison.

Just a note about the mid-nineties theme at 3:48, there’s a longer version of the main evening opening from around one minute in on this: th-cam.com/video/hvYzkZlVS0I/w-d-xo.html , it doesn’t even seem like a news programme, more a magazine with the sofas and sax music. The second Granada Reports era (particularly with Tony H Wilson) seemed a good way to go

4:21 look like Hearst TV News opens their music distinct similarly to BBC Midlands Today from 1984.

I already know that, but why they did that?

The 1986 clip was from the day Pat Phoenix died and the early 90s Granada Tonight with the Granada in the North West idents came about with the 1991 franchise auction coming up where Phil Redmond was the only rival who bid more but failed on the quality threshold

I grew up in Granadaland and aside from 2 years away I lived there until 2016 and even as a child remember feeling slightly cringy about how many revamps of the studios, theme and titles they had for the news output , the news programme itself was always adequate and enjoyable even when it was on for an hour but the themes were at best , 'catchy' and the presentation always felt cheap even when shown in the region it was made with the all the associated branding . Compared to Thames news , I see now , it felt like they were playing at it . I never understood why they had so many theme changes. If they can design such a good theme and titles as "This morning " ...it just seems like they couldn't be bothered . Even within the region the first musical ident (logo) we got for continuity was the ITV Generic one (1989) and at the time I remember thinking "this is a bit fancy for granada" but realising that it was something to do with the network because the same logo appeared on national sport and weather plus the Granada logo was wrong 😂they only used it for a very short time and then developed their first moving musical one , the blue and white one "dum-dum, dum-dum , dum .....Daaaaaa"

Dum-dum , dum-dum makes me think of the early 70s(?) theme from the local evening news show from Granada called 6.01 The visual was a clock approaching 6.01 (18.01) and the theme was Miles Davis Milestones th-cam.com/video/k94zDsJ-JMU/w-d-xo.html Hope that is what you remember.

They had some pretty nice animated idents (CGI no less) for a short time in 1986 to celebrate 30 years. The jingle on those early 90's idents was not original either though, the IBA were using it on their frontcap before engineering announcements from the late 80's

Growing up in suburban London and having collected recordings of many of the network's other station idents on audio tape, I wrote to Granada in the late 80s (to submit my own design for an animated front-cap ident) and in the early 90s (to request any promotional/branded items like keyrings or stickers that they might have to give away). Their response in both cases was that they preferred to let their programmes speak for themselves and therefore there was no great need to brand the station in any fancy way nor promote their image to viewers. Not every station could make that claim and be plausible - but to be fair to Granada, in their case it was a good point well made.

I think the opening titles at 0:07 was from 1976. There was a clip posted on here many years ago (didn't last long!), not dated, but most comments suggested that it was from that year, others said it was earlier, others later, all in agreement though, they were from the 1970s. Sometime between 1973-1978, if not 1976, all titles I have seen for Granada Reports from 1979 onwards clearly different. The 1989 titles were at 2:10 in this clip.
