Yeah for sure, double tap on the side of the headset and you have your pass through enabled, works with Oculus Link, Steam Link and VD. Though you will not have audio from your PC whilst doing that so if you’re on discord for example you’ll go deaf as long as you have pass through enabled

@@muzzman1030 definitely not OLED levels but better than the G2, there’s also less glare with bright objects in dark scenes so that helps the contrast a bit too. I believe there’s a way to keep audio from the app running in pass through but I haven’t looked into it yet.
Glad it works for you. I went from a Rift S to the G2 and I will not leave the G2 till a Non Zuckerberg Company makes a G2 replacement with inside out tracking and No Battery when hooked to PC. That's not $4000.00 lol Good Video.
That's such a thing! I don't understand why there are no new PCVR headsets with inside out tracking. I was very interested in a Big Screen Beyond. Like, "Ok yeah I can stretch to that no problem. Oh wait, I've got to spend close to $500 extra on weird little cubes to clutter up my space and take up outlets? Yeah nah"
well, WMR is basically dead, so that leaves what? Pimax (shit QC/CS, and horrible marketing practices), and the BSB (though both are not inside-out, both require base stations), or you can wait for valves new headset which will likely be $1000+, plus you'll need controllers & probably base stations bringing the cost closer to 1.5k if not more. Last option would be Pico 4, but that's not readily available in the US, without going grey market, and they just cancelled the Pico 5 so future is unknown. IMO, the zuck-suck headset is *still* the best option on the market for VR. Little known fact, but Oculus headsets account for like 60-70% of SteamVR users... Hate to say it, but Oculus is the main driver for PCVR for now.
If you're adamant you don't want a Zucculus just get a Pico4, it's the next best thing to the Quest3 for a reasonable price. But the Q3 really is the best value hmd.
Thanks for the comparison. Good work. No one talks about the hardware requirements vs the g2, unfortunately. I have a g2 now, and running dcs at 90 fps (to match the refresh rate of the lenses) is basically impossible without lowering pixel density. 60hz creates really bad strobing which gives me a headache. I am a hater of motion reprojection due to the artifacts and cannot stand it. Now, if i were to have my current system which already runs the g2, will the q3 run WORSE due to the wider range of clarity of the lenses, or same/better due to WMR bloatware being absent?
And i mean will it run better/same/worse if both headsets ran at 90hz refresh rate. I would definitely get the q3 if at 72hz would allow me to play with slightly higher graphics and wothout reprojection..
It will run roughly the same. In my experience initially I had a slightly better performance and better consistency. The lenses don’t affect performance since they just point the light at your eyes and they’re the main contributor to the Q3s superior visual quality, it’s the resolution that mainly determines the performance impact. The total pixel count is slightly lower on the Q3 but because of WMR shenanigans if you were to equal the resolution demanded you’d run marginally better. With the Q3 you have the choice of 72 and 80 hz as well, I personally settled on 80 but as I mentioned in the video 72hz has no significant strobing. Another thing is Q3s reprojection is far better to WMR’s option so definitely do give it a try. There’s still artifacts here and there but nowhere near as bad as on the G2.
Thanks for the video. Today my G2's left screen started flickerin (like it works only half of the right screens Hz, lowered the hz to 60 and the problem was just bigger. Then left screen worked like 30hz). Anyone else had this kind of issue? But anyways, I also own Pico 4 but I was disapointed with its streaming quality. I am considering to buy Quest 3 but I have my doubts for these streaming headsets instead. So is the image as clear as in G2 and is there much latency?
As shown and said in the video clarity is basically the same, except it’s across the whole screen. As for latency depends on how you want to do it and your networking if you go wireless. Wired you can go with a very high bitrate giving what is basically a compression artefact free image with no considerable latency. Wireless (with virtual desktop) you can get pretty good quality compression wise with under 60ms latency - not an issue for me but it varies from person to person.
Be aware...the Oculus quest app V63 and DCS are not compatible anymore...crashing on startup in VR. Read in DCS forum. I'm one of the affected. No solution yet. Is going to take some time.
Is the Quest 3 honeymoon over? I came from a G2 also .. was an original pre-order (August 2020; arrived Jan 2021) and my cable just died. I am a few days now into my Q3 and the AR is very very cool (watching movies I would have never done before sitting in my sim rig). My overall main dislike is the latency -- I am on a year old Wifi6 (not E) in a saturated environment (apartment building) . Many of these reviewers have houses away from other people with less wifi signals. I have yet to tweak mine better with Virtual Desktop. My 4090/7800x3d was only recognizing the stock cable as a USB 2 and was horrid with quality until VDesktop. Ordered both a Bobo S3 and a powered link cable. I totally agree on the lenses, though the SDE is much much worse; tradeoffs are still a point after 3 years of VR 2+. I really want(ed) a Pimax Crystal Super, but they do not ship here unfortunately so for me it was a no brainer on the Quest 3 to prevent my rig from dusting up
I use a WiFi 5 router with VD now, and I live in a multi floor apartament with plenty of wifi in the area. I get sub 60ms latency on godlike resolution and 80hz with AV1 10bit. I ditched the cable because of audio crackles which seem to stem from Oculus drivers, though I wish I could use VD wired too, wireless is lovely but not necessary for DCS at all imo. I'm still waiting for Valve to make an Index 2/Deckard a reality though.
@@Destarn I had horrible audio latency and crackles that reminded me of my G2 that had improper contact with the speakers... this was on a USB C cable and I've only used the headset wireless. I'll add a link cable in the next few days and report back my findings. Might be USB drivers fault with AMD mobo (x670)

G2 was useless for me, my IPD is 68.2 so it should be just about ok but it was blurry enough to be annoying... Guess I can try the Q3, what's another $600 🤷♂
I think that want everyone needs to factor in is not just specs, but WMR. It’s not supported, the next Windows 11 update is apparently bricking the G2. You also have to factor in that I’ve had to turn off SteamVR Room, motion vector, reduce quality to 50%, and do all sorts of other tweaks just to get it to work. Most times opening SteamVR I’d just freeze or lag out. The visuals itself are blurry and text have god rays and are basically unreadable without straining your eyes. Pass through is abysmal, and having to hold up controllers to see circles of a 240 p grey reality is horrid. There is not world where I’d recommend the G2 in the current day. The resolution difference is so minor. Thinks like comfort or battery can be fixed with a good strap, and more 3rd parties support Quest products. Don’t buy a G2 in 2024, you’ve been warned.
@@Destarn I think that when a company and a platform/program no longer supports a headset that needs both, it's not worth it. If you have your headset break, need a replacement part, or need an upgrade, a bug fix, or anything really, having no support is terrible. I mean WMR is not even in a good state atm, and it bugs out all the time in conjunction with SteamVR. WMR also has issues with finding games to launch from your PC. I mean I'm lucky that I don't have automatic updates turned on, but if I ever run into an issue that requires a Windows update, I'm screwed tbh. If you already have a G2, do your best to keep it and deal with it (which is what I'm doing), but if don't, It's not worth "upgrading" to one over a Quest 3 imo. The pancake lenses by themselves are insane for visual clarity, which is sorely needed on any old VR headset.
@@readifdumb I don’t think anyone would see changing to the G2 from a Quest 3 an upgrade. My video was mean merely as a comparison of both to see if it’s worth to change from G2 to Q3. When I was writing the video I wasn’t even aware of WMR being discontinued so right now I’m even more biased towards the Quest lol
@@Destarn Ah okay. I guess mine was more so a warning. Because some people hate Meta/Facebook, don't want to have an account, don't want compression, want good audio, and care a lot about flight sims/racing sims, and resolution. On paper all these things could lead someone to buy a G2, so my comment was more as an extra warning alongside your video to fully cover it. I have managed to get my G2 working through trial and error, but I haven't fixed the blurry visuals, and still have issues with controllers, passthrough, weight, cord, etc. Quest 2 and 3 on the other hand seem like plug and play for the most part.
@@readifdumb there’s some setup involved but much less than with the G2 for sure. It’s tricky to get it working properly. Q2 I don’t know but from people who owned both the G2 and Q2 it was better to get the Reverb for DCS. With the Q3 it’s basically out of the question
"DCS World - Reverb G2 vs Quest 3" - yo there is like 1/5 of the film that covers these headsets in terms of playing dcs with it. Half of the video is about audio and *ROOMSCALE GAMING*, I repeat, the name of the video is "DCS World - Reverb G2 vs Quest 3"...
There’s only one section with DCS in the name but the content within is still relevant to DCS. It uses the screens and my biggest issues regarding the Q3 was about audio so there was a bit more rambling about that, sure. Sounding like you’re flying a WW2 plane without a canopy on SRS because of the issues described within the video isn’t that great. And considering that it’s a decent improvement for DCS over the G2 but a massive for roomscale gaming I found it important to mention since it’s a massive strength of this headset even if it goes a bit off topic of our beloved flight sim. Thanks for the input though!
Indeed I am. It is still a very good headset it’s just starting to show it’s age. We can definitely guess what could’ve been but WMR is dead and HP haven’t made any new VR hardware since 2021 when they stopped at the G2 Omnicept.
Older tech can often be superior too. In this case, I like the G2 way more because it's native PCVR - a nearly abandoned concept nowadays. Besides, 3 years is not really a lot for today's electronics.
HP hasn't been "Quality" anything since the mid Nineties when they went full Woke. I used to work at HP on Stevens Creek in 53U NSD and saw it firsthand. Black chicks that knew nothing about Computers were being put in management positions because of skin color and nothing else.

I had no issues running both headsets one after another. As for readability I do see the difference but it’s by no means unreadable, just slightly more blurry. How do you connect your headset and what are your settings?
@@Destarn Yeah, slightly more blurry is correct. Maybe the Quest uses compression or something? I connected both headsets via cable. I also find the G2 more comfy, somehow, although the G2 tends to heat up more often and then the lenses get foggy. I think they play in the same class. But since Microsoft drops support for MR headsets, the days of the G2 are more or less over, anyway...
@@BenjaminJannedy it does use compression but with a good cable you basically can’t see it. And yes out of the box it is less comfortable but with the BoboVR M3 strap I find it more comfy than the G2
Did you get this sorted in the end? I guess you have tried adjusting the IPD etc?
@@LaurenceGough For the moment, I use the G2 for DCS and the Quest for everything else. Thats completely okay for me. Maybe next weekend, I'll retry the Q3 for DCS. But thats a little work for me, since I have to uninstall all the G2 stuff and Install the Quest Link software and configure everything.
Great review.
Is the video compression through the Usb-c cable okay for DCS? Does it add any artifacts?
It is highly dependent on the USB cable but a with a decent 2.5 Gbit capable one I can’t tell there’s compression going on. And only artifacts are present with ASW which can be turned off but it’s actually pretty darn good for DCS
DCS's render engine is dogshit, I can't tell artifacts until below like 100mbps or lower.
@@Destarn alright, that’s relieving to know. I wanted to have backup VR headset in mind, as our Hp reverb g2 is coming end of life. Was considering quest 3 as a substitute, but it not using displayport and I was wondering how noticable is the compression. Is that even an issue.
Thanks for clarifying that.
Meta is working on the mic from what I've learned possibly through a firmware update
I hope they manage to make it less bad. Imo it’s just bad placement, right in front of the mouth
they never fixed it
I swapped G2 to Q3 and it's infinitely better. My G2 is gathering dust with another cable going down faulty. So glad I don't have to deal with this bs anymore playing wireless. Also dumb tiny sweet spot that won't even go to 70mm ipd is gone, bye bye. Q3 visuals are way way better due to pancakes and bigger IPD
Thank you. Well done.
How did you find the color difference between the two headsets? Was one of my favourite things about the g2 was the amazing colors
I would say it’s basically the same, maybe with better color consistency on the Q3, you also get adjustable brightness and higher peak brightness on the Quest
i am using quest 3 with virtual desktop an play on an 4070 card in av1 encoder what give the quest a4k resolution an really clear pictures. makes the dcs beautiffull.
also when u play in virtual desktop you're battery wont drain out cause u can keep the cable in the headset play in av1 wireless an keep charging with link cable.
Yeah sadly I’m on a 4090 so no AV1 for me, though I heard it’s very good
@@Destarn u can use av1 with virtual. Desktop that's a real nice program u won't regret getting it it cost something about 20 dollar but it is a real game changer absolutely in dcs!!
Just ordered this. I don't care about the quality of the speakers as I use gaming ones anyway. I've heard from other guys that the pancake lenses are really good for DCS. Vids like this are useful cheers!
in what way does the Q3 outweigh the G2 in DCS, I'm not seeing it at all.
@@dabneyoffermein595 It works for one. I know of so many problems with the G2. I had to get rid of mine it drove me nuts and a friend of mine's just broken too. I'm an oculus fanboy to be fair lol but Very few problems with it and the lenses are vastly superior.
quick question, while playing DCS (or any PC VR game) can you for a quick second use the pass through, let's say to check a message or so?
Yeah for sure, double tap on the side of the headset and you have your pass through enabled, works with Oculus Link, Steam Link and VD. Though you will not have audio from your PC whilst doing that so if you’re on discord for example you’ll go deaf as long as you have pass through enabled
@@Destarn ahhh … my main use was using discord while playing DCS … hehe.
Any idea on how the Quest 3 LCD compares to an OLeD from the likes of Bigscreen Beyond’s VR?
Im just sad that I’m having to think about replacing my HP reverb G2, when it works perfectly fine. Really stupid of microsoft to stop its support for Mixed Reality Headsets.
@@muzzman1030 definitely not OLED levels but better than the G2, there’s also less glare with bright objects in dark scenes so that helps the contrast a bit too. I believe there’s a way to keep audio from the app running in pass through but I haven’t looked into it yet.
Thanks for update @@Destarn
Hopefully Valve makes their rumored headset true soon…
If you're adamant you don't want a Zucculus just get a Pico4, it's the next best thing to the Quest3 for a reasonable price. But the Q3 really is the best value hmd.
@@Verociity the problem with the Pico4, is that its ByteDance vs Meta. and tbh, I'd take the zucc succ over fucko the CCP feeder any day.
With the Q3
you have the choice of 72 and 80 hz as well, I personally settled on 80 but as I mentioned in the video 72hz has no significant strobing.
Wireless (with virtual desktop) you can get pretty good quality compression wise with under 60ms latency - not an issue for me but it varies from person to person.
love both
Be aware...the Oculus quest app V63 and DCS are not compatible anymore...crashing on startup in VR. Read in DCS forum. I'm one of the affected. No solution yet. Is going to take some time.
There are workarounds but it seems it doesn’t affect me for some reason
The workarounds got me back up. Downloaded two files and copied over to my oculus directory. No more problems.
Which model offers greater performance ?
If you mean 128v512gb versions, there is no difference.
Ordering: Surely a 4080 can handle it?
Oh yeah easily.
@@andreas9119 I tried with other cables and with my dedicated PCIE card that I used for the G2 (also on X570 here), it was also present over airlink. As for latency it was fine on cable, non issue
back to the G2....it's amazing, when going back to the G2, I wonder how I ever left it?
@@dabneyoffermein595 My G2's already sold and off to be enjoyed by someone else. Q3 just better and I had money to toss at the microphone and speakers to make that a non issue.
i will wait for the pimax 12k to change the g2!
time to get a BoboVR A2
Only for the Quest 2 for now, it won’t fit on the Q3 as far as I can tell.
@@Destarn I believe there are conversion kits but the battery isn't powerful enough to power the Q3
BoboVR sucks damn hard with Quest 3. The Batteries aren´t strong enough
@@Felix-pm1fg how come? They keep my headset charged at 100% for 1.5H roughly, I have two and they perform the same
Only the G2, just nothing compares
👍👍👍
I am so disappointed that Microsoft is deprecating WMR (making my G2 completely useless.)
Yeah it’s a shame, it’s still a solid headset and you can get them really cheap now. I can only hope someone comes up with a non ms dependent way to use it but that’s about it
G2 was useless for me, my IPD is 68.2 so it should be just about ok but it was blurry enough to be annoying...
For sure, though WMR can remain enabled as long as you disable feature updates, both in W10 and 11.
Q3 with godlike settings is better than G2. Confirmed
"..is it possible to learn this power?"
@@Verociity The virtual desktop side of the force is a screen resolution some consider to be....
I'm confused, there's a lot to be desired, can you list all the advantages, I see none
Your Comparing 2020 To 2023 Tech. IMO, If HP Stayed In The Game, Their Newer Product Would Have Been Better.
