The $3B Nazi Forgery Intended To Bring About The Collapse Of British Economy | Operation Bernhard

แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 ก.พ. 2017
  • During the Second World War SS Intelligence developed a secret weapon to undermine and ruin the British war effort - it was a weapon made of paper. Operation Bernhard - the Nazi codename for this covert project - became the biggest currency forgery in history, counterfeiting, at today’s value, over three billion pounds. The 104-strong workforce who produced the money were all Jewish prisoners isolated in a special workshop at Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin. With the threat of death hanging over them they skilfully printed banknotes, which the Bank of England described as: “the most dangerous forgeries ever seen”. For the first time four of these Jewish prisoners speak out about their enforced collaboration with the Nazis, what happened to the fake millions they produced, and how they themselves survived, by a miracle, to tell the story.

At 3:26 that man saying as a child he was ashamed he didn’t protect his father better. That killed me , it hit me so deep. Have you ever seen your parent so devastated and sad that you wished you could take their pain? I have and as a child it shook metro the core. 😭

This is one of the best Timeline episodes I have ever seen. These good men endured, suffered and made exceptions wherever necessary -- to outlive their cruel masters who treated them as "intelligent cattle." No doubt each of these good men carries full knowledge and comprehension of the extent to which men can do evil. But as I watched this excellent video unfold, I kept thinking -- this earthly life is not the place of judging; except inasmuch as we men are able to render it. Instead, though they may think otherwise, the evil and cruel don't escape their ultimate destiny -- which occurs at the moment immediately following their heart's final beats, their lungs' final breaths.

They were not pound notes (as the narrator keeps saying) but five pound notes (as the film shows).
The Nazis never distributed them, but they did use them to pay various German spies, including 'Cicero' (Elysesa Bazna) an Albanian who worked at the British embassy in Istanbul, Turkey, who passed on secrets to the Germans throughout the 1940s. (He was the subject of the film '5 Fingers' starring James Mason).
He was never caught or jailed for spying but when he tried to use his forged five pound notes to buy a hotel in Ankera he was caught and jailed for passing counterfeit money (the bank of England realised immediately they were forgeries).
He sued the West German government for paying him with counterfeit money and to try and get them to reimburse him with genuine notes, but did not succeed and lost his case.

I've handled both original notes and the Operation Bernhard counterfeits, and they were very good and would have only gotten better as time went on. They could have destroyed the British banking system given enough time. Dropping them from aircraft would not have worked, though. It would have attracted too much attention and the government would have been suspicious of the notes right away. Sneaking it in by covert means and having spies across the country spending it into circulation would have worked better. It would have been less noticeable.

A seriously lucky series of events spared these great men. Despite knowing, not one of the 6,000,000 murdered would want survivors to suffer, the survivors guilt must weigh heavily, on them from time to time. The same is true for anyone who survives any tragic event, or a series of horrific events where others perished.

How can one live a normal life after the camps? There was nothing that money could have been spent on. The British Isles was under incredibly strict rationing and all industry was making war goods, not consumer items. OK you could go and buy a Spitfire, but not the petrol to put in it. Its was not a great idea, at least not during a war where people were concentrating on winning it, not buying as many gramophones or holiday homes.
