  • We are at two different location in North Elizabeth, NJ on the North East Corridor. Just north of the station, and at the station platform. The following clips are of AMT 925, Metroliner, Amt 926, PC 4930, PC 4932, AMT 904, PC 4935, Metroliner, PC 4877. Video was taken with a old Kodak 8mm Sound movie camera, so the quality is not the greatest, put is preserved for all to see, and hear in 1977. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294.5™

I hired out on Penn Central in March of 1974. It was a honor to operate these locomotives. Now let me tell tell you something. Amtrak had gotten there new passenger coaches before they got the AEM-7 locomotives. Amtrak took mail cars and put the head end power in them for the new coaches. I always here on videos that the GG-1could go 100 M.P.H. Let me tell you that the GG-1 would run at speeds of 125 M.P.H and up to 135 M.P.H. I was firing on these jobs, and personally ran theses locomotives at 125M.P.H.. If we would lose some time on our schedule( because of slow signals) I could make up some time by running the GG-1 at up to 135M.P.H. These locomotives were in my mind way ahead of there time. Hated to see them retire. I went with NJ Transit when Conrail and operated these locomotives until there retirement.

+Ronald Melhorn The only people who didn't like the GG1s were the ones who serviced them. Asbestos and PCPs. They had to go.

THE GG1 WAS A PREMIER LOCOMOTIVE! EVERYTHING WAS GRACEFUL ABOUT IT ! FOR IT'S WEIGHT TO HOLD THE ROAD AND SHEER BRUTE POWER AND WHEEL ARRANGEMENT IT COULD GO ANY SPEED AN AM-7 COULD GO AND MORE! HANDS DOWN! BUT IT WOULD SCARE THE DAMN DAYLIGHTS OUT OF YOU IF YOU WERE STANDING ON A PLATFORM AT THE NEW BRUNSWICK STATION AND SAW THAT MONSTER PASSING YOU AT SPEED'S IN ACCESS OF 135 AND UP! I BELIEVE I WAS IN THAT STATION ONE NIGHT AND SOMETHING CAME BY THAT STATION WITH SUCH FEROSITY AND SHEER SPEED THAT I COULD ONLY BELIEVE THAT IT WAS A GG1AND NOTHING ELSE PERIOD! THAT IT WAS A GG1

I've ridden behind the GG-1s. It is amazing when you got to Harrisburg and they pulled the two diesels off of the Broadway Limited and coupled on one GG-1, the difference in speed. Those line poles just flew by and the clickity-clack from the rails was really fast!

Interesting collection of GG-1s! Managed to grab a few stills in my day. I may even have one painted in the Amtrak orange work train scheme! I favor the PRR pinstripe scheme-when they were finally painted in Amtrak red, white & blue I didn't care for it. I have been by these stations (by GG-1) many times in the 60s.
Riding behind one was a real TRIP!! That lone headlight looked like one big eyeball!

Enjoyable! Just wish this were longer. So cool seeing how graceful the GG1's looked hauling Amtrak trains at speed! Also neat seeing the Metroliners in action! Some of them were not repainted for several years and a few kept their Penn Central logos for a long stretch.

Your right Earl. The GG-1 was a monster. It had 12 drivers and 8 truck wheels,4 on each truck. For me it was heart breaking to see them taken out of service. Anyone can operate these new locomotives. I went with NJTRO when Conrail broke up. Locomotive Engineers from other railroads, other than Penn Central. Could not operate the GG-1. This was not there fault. The GG-- had 22 throttle positions, you had to come out one notch at a time. The GG-1 had spoked driver wheels. In between the spokes, there were rubber padded starters., these starters would tap against the spokes A.C. Electricity which cycles,(like your home electric which is 60 HZ that means 60 times a second the electricity reverses direction)and get the locomotive moving. When the GG-1 would reach around 15 MPH. You would here the A.C. Traction motors start. That's when the GG-1 would show its true power. If you were operating from the number one end of the GG-1 you would here the tap switches on the transformer closing.

I started videoing in 1982 and have been doing so up to today, got years of RR action, steam, diesel & electric, East, West Midwest, North & South. Need to find out how to download my stuff to share.

Continued from last comment m. Stepping up the amperage. The sound was very audible. Like I've said these GG--1's were way ahead of there time. I am proud and privileged to had operated these locomotives. Any other questions would be appreciated. I will answer them to the best of my ability. P.S. locomotive engineers running trains on the main line did not use alcohol or drugs. That crew at the gunpowder river bridge, that went past the stop signal that caused the lives of the engineer and passengers ,were the exception to the rule. Any engineer that had any alcohol or drug problem, were barred from the main line, and the few that had these problems worked in the freight yards.

As is commonplace among amateur camera holders filming trains, they stand too close to see the locomotives well, and they move the camera so fast that what little you might have seen, is no better than blurred mass of indistinct images.

I really liked the original Metroliners and as a kid always wanted to ride them but alas my family never travelled beyond Philly and didn't balked at the higher fare than the regular NE Corridor. By the time I was old enough to travel alone, the original Metroliners were removed. They looked sleek but alas they were lemons. The failure of the original Metroliners put PRR out of business for good and the once mighty company which revolutionised rail techonology went into the dust bin of history.
