If you want to spare with a lighter and more flexible stick, chestnut offers a nice type of wood to do that
Thanks for the suggestion. We use rattan for its lighter weight considering that we can generate a considerable amount of power with our rotational cuts. Rattan impacts very light and the chance of breaking an opponent is very low. we consider this a low armor training tool as well. it allows our lower ranked students to spar sooner and have fun doing it. that being said we still use rigid joint and hand protection as well as throat protection even though we don't allow thrusts with this weapon. Again though we greatly appreciate the suggestion and the interest. Cheers
I like singlesick quite a bit myself as saber is one of my favorite weapons.
I love Saber. It is a very entertaining weapon to both watch and spar with. It is a remarkably sneaky weapon. particularly in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. My preferred method is Polish Saber.

Important to note that when the singlestick is used as a training weapon for saber or Broadsword and not for cane fighting, that it is mandatory to use it in a „blade way“ and not as a blunt impact tool. Sometimes we see that trouble when students pick up singlesticks and use it just like a stick, instead of a blade.
I laugh now, looking back at how we used to do this as kids, albeit with lengths of Japanese knotweed instead of a cane. Still hurt like hell when you'd get clocked in the head with a Rhizome 🤣
I was referred here by Mr Holmes, he seems to think this activity is beneficial to sharpen the deductive abilities of the mind

i preformed a perfect thrust in the 2017 Rose City Classic Against Par Parmar with Nicole officiating the bout. i got zero points because i had no clue there was a no thrust rule in place.....wouldn't ya know it. cause that shit was epic, the best move i had the entire tournament.

Are those from Lowman Leatherworks? Can you tell me if there's any issue with the bottom lip of the Singlestick making contact with the underside of the wrist during a strike? It seems a lot of these only work with a hammer grip.
Want to study the SingleStick eventually. Do you recommend studying Hokkaido as well?

Arent cane swords a thing though? I think theyre called swordsticks, which were concealed in canes in I think the 19th century
There a thing but were widely reguarded by martial arts, weapons and fencing masters as not being good self defense tools. Good for suprising a victim as an assassination tactic, but, not for fending off attacks.
how old do you have to be? im 16 and very passionate about history, problem is im about 5'5, and 140 pounds.
Hi Ryder. There are a lot of people in HEMA who are small or short and thin that have trained with us. I'd say you're just fine to start. You should come join one of our online classes and give it a go. We have had people much younger then you begin this and do very well
Y’all use a cover? I was hit twice by a standard, then a heavier metal-wrapped-in-rubber stick in the middle finger, making twice. For a different sport though.
Imagine thinking broken fingers is good for training...
