That kid got an American ration chocolate bar...which was more bittersweet than sweet, and did not much resemble edible chocolate as we describe it today. If the kid is lucky, he got a later version of US ration chocolate called a "Tropical Bar" that resembled real chocolate a little bit more, but which was still pretty revolting by any standard today. US ration chocolate was designed to be a reliable store of easily eaten calories, and was made with ingredients to make it survive high temperatures, with taste being pretty far down the list of priorities...it included oat flour, cacao fat, and vitamin B1 powder to counteract beriberi, with just a little bit of cocoa powder, skim milk powder, and a touch of sugar.
The Army actually specified that the ration bar not taste all that great, because there were concerns that soldiers would just eat a good tasting one as a snack at the first opportunity rather than saving it for when it was needed. The bar we see in the show is, however, not tropical chocolate at all, but the chocolate bar component of a US Army K-Ration (Temperate Climate variety) which were made of commercial Hershey's chocolate. So it would indeed have tasted pretty good.
@@cenotemirror I see that the K ration had something called the "sweet chocolate bar" initially in 2 oz bars, but then later switched to 1 oz bars...is that what you are referring to? I had missed that one in my research before, thanks for letting me know about it. But it looks like it was made not just by Hershey's, but also Nestle and several other candy manfacturers...so it seems like it was another item made to the military's formula by multiple companies...like planes and jeeps and Sherman tanks. LOL
So i should point out that the tank fight that they show in the series isn't how it really happened, its a case of Hollywood making the battle more exciting then it really happened, the channel "Liveth For Evermore" did a good video on the battle called "Forgotten Heroes of Band of Brothers: The Battle of Nuenen | September 1944"
