Ross McCall is a Scottish actor best known for his roles as T-5 Joseph Liebgott in the HBO miniseries 'Band of Brothers' and as Matthew Keller in the hit series 'White Collar'.
McCall began his acting career at a young age and landed his first notable screen role at age 13 portraying Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in the 1989 music video for the song 'The Miracle'.
In 2001 McCall would join an ensemble cast and portray Easy Company veteran Joseph Liebgott in HBO's epic miniseries 'Band of Brothers'. The series found immediate success and has stood the test of time as one of most pivotal and influential creative works surrounding World War II.

Fun fact, Joe Liebgott being Jewish was actually a change they made for the show. In real life, he was actually a catholic, but because of his name and the Austrian dialect of German he spoke that people confused for Yiddish, everyone just assumed he was Jewish. Joe was fine with this though, and never bothered to correct anyone.
Joe was an ethnic Jew. His family converted.
But other members of Easy company said Liebgott said he was Jewish. Every time and everyone called him a Jew. Shames (who we didn't really get to see in the movie was Jewish too.

Joe is my great great uncle. Pretty cool people sharing his story and having that connection for me is one of the coolest things in my family.

Ross Mcall's finest moment as Joseph Liebgott was during the concentration camp scenes. Some tremendous acting by Ross. Such a great actor.

The reverence Mr. McCall shows towards Joseph Liebgott and the other Band Of Brothers is undeniable. I've watched the series proabably a dozen times, it never gets old.
If you read the book you will discover that Joe Liebgott was in fact a Catholic!

Yes you can tell he absorbed the role and had tons of respect for the vets they portrayed.
Me too. I own it the series. I just feel compelled to watch it every couple years. It’s my all time favorite series ever. The list is ok long to mention how many different ways that is so good. The experience, heroism and friendship is incredible to watch. The production was first rate, casting you name it. It’s all there.

David Schwimmer was kept away from the rest of the actors during their Boot Camp so there would be no personal bonds formed and the resentment of Captain Sobell would be real. It is good to hear that Schwimmer offered his assistance to get the character of Liebgott as accurate as possible.
Oh trust me if he's anything remotely...1% the narcissist arrogant and insecure loser that Ross was in Friends....he is already perfectly dislikeable.

I heard that they did that with Matt Damon on Saving Private Ryan. The rest of the cast was sent through boot camp and he didn't so as to depict the initial resentment towards his character.

@@barryscott2645 they used the exact same process yes since it was the exact same men running the show. The actors in the SPR squad all had to do boot camp while Hanks and Damon were kept seperate, Hanks cos he was playing the commissioned officer ofcourse and Damon who did not have to do boot camp so as to deliberately create real life resentment from the others and because his part in the film was only small cos he only comes in at the very end so he didn't have to play war game for long like the others did, although I must say Vin Diesel must've been pissed off the most. Not only didn't he get to meet Damon he got the beach scene then his part in the film was over. I would've been calling my agent.
Band of Brothers and The Pacific are two of the greatest pieces in cinema history. Spielberg and Hanks really did an amazing job. Over 20 years now and it hasn’t aged a bit and I’ll continue to watch them every single year.
The pacific is hard to watch. POWERFUL series. Shame that it didn’t take off the way Band did . It was dark, wrenching , fantastic show . The story telling was better in Band, but Pacific really gave you the sense of the depths of hell that the pacific theater was .
@@Error_404-F.cks_Not_FoundI agree, much darker story telling, but that’s what it was… sweltering hot jungles, fighting a ruthless army, that refused to quit. My dads uncle was stationed in Pearl Harbor, but thankfully his ship was out to sea when the bombing occurred, and they weren’t attacked. I will say the pacific has one of the greatest intros of any series or movie. When band came out, I thought that would be a hard intro to top, but they really did an outstanding job with the cinematography, artwork, and the score… fantastic

You can hear Leibgott in his voice even now when he says certain things. My girlfriend who recently passed was Jewish and the scene of him talking about what he was going to do after the war with Webster gets to me now in a different way. And the scene of the camps. Just heartbreaking and gut wrenching how hard that would have been to deal with. Thank you for your portrayal of Mr Leibgott. It was one of the highlights of an amazing show

He has a really interesting voice now some words are spoken in an American accent like "Hank" whereas "Tom" was usually said in a British accent
BoB is in my opinion the best mini-series ever made. I watch it every year around Memorial day.

Ya know, I'll second that. In my humble opinion, BoB is one of, if not the best HBO miniseries ever made. Also, I'll add this - the episodes are like Pringles, you just cant enjoy one. If you think you're gonna just watch, say, 'Episode 1: Curahee' in the morning and then get on with your day, you may just find yourself sitting there all day and watching 'Episode 10: Points' 10 hours later. =))

only Joseph Liebgott was Catholic. But it wasn't well known.
My FIL was a WWII combat vet. He served in Patton's 3rd Army and was awarded a bronze star by taking out German pillbox alone. Like most heroes he didn't talk about the war
We just finished watching Band of Brothers with my 14 year old twins about a week ago. They're in awe of these amazing men, and both asked for Stephen Ambrose books, and the biographies of the men featured in BOB for Christmas. Not electronics. WW2 books. Amazing. Watching their thirst for history take off like that moved me in a way I cannot explain. Thank you Ross, for your incredible portrayal, and thank you to all of the actors involved for their extraordinary work. God bless our greatest generation.

I remember watching Band of Brothers when I was a kid. My uncle had the DVD box set and we sat through it over a weekend. I remember liking it a lot, but forgetting about it after a while.
Rewatching this show now, as an adult, I have the deepest respect for the veterans, the actors portraying them, and the entire crew that created this masterpiece. There won't be another cinematic masterpiece like this in my lifetime and this was awesome to witness.
Not to mention the real soldiers that went through this history...
Can you imagine being the actor playing these men's friend and end up being treated by them as they did when he was alive. Man, the honor and respect. =')
My father landed on Utah Beach and followed the same course as the BoB. He would never talk about his experience. Through 😮 like I can begin trying to comprehend what he went through. I have also had the privilege of going to the Holocaust Museum. That was an experience I will never forget. I wish my Dad would have been alive to see BoB. I hope it would have been a chance for him to talk. Excellent series. I watched it again recently. It doesn't age. It should be available for many many years to come to help people learn and understand. Bless everyone who was involved in BoB and bless those incredibly brave men.
All these guys got way more out of this than just another acting job. It’s obvious in all of their voices in these interviews. RIP to all those brave men they portrayed.
I wish Tom Hanks would do a series, or at least a movie, about Korea.. The Forgotten War truly lives up to it's name, and there's plenty of stories to tell.. I should know, my grandfather got a Bronze Star during the Battle of the Bowling Alley, not for heroics on the field but for taking over the books/supply for the entire US Army 2nd Infantry Division so that other officers could be freed up to fight. (and simultaneously keep him in a relatively safe position I'm sure) And I never knew anything about it until long after he died.. almost 20 years afterwards in fact, and he was a veteran of the New Guinea campaign during WW2. Ultimately he made Captain and was in charge of a M39 AUV before the war ended and they kicked him down to Sgt and shipped him off to Alaska to train to fight the Russians. There's stories to tell of Korea, and the wider world needs to hear about them and I think Tom Hanks is great at telling those stories.

When I was in high school in RE I approached the teacher and said I had this box set on VHS that would be helpful as we were studying the Hollocaust at that time. Everyone was laughing at the bonking scene at the beginning cause bewbs. But when it got to the scene of Joe telling the prisoners they weren't allowed to leave yet for their own good in order for proper medical intervention and breaks down, the entire room was deathly silent. Such a powerfully well done scene that it silenced a room full of teenagers and made many of them sob. It still gets me to this day ❤ You did a fantastic job Ross of truly capturing the horror of it ❤

The episode is called “Why we fight”. I believe the camp is based on a real sub camp that Easy Company stumbled across.
@Gala-yp8nx Yes, you're right, though they weren't the first to liberate it, if I remember correctly it was the 10th Armoured Division that liberated it - there's an interesting scene where Maj Winters turns up with Nixon and you can see one of the MPs guarding the gates has the insignia on his shoulder patch. It's a fantastic detail because of course in making a miniseries they had to condense the timeline to screen time but they still give a nod to the real history. Timeless series, you find something new every time you rewatch it
Don't really see a relation to the holocaust. It was just a work camp. No American liberated a death camp.
BoB holds up. I watch the entire series every few years. One of the best achievements in television history. A WWII themed trip to Europe remains on my bucket list. My grandfather survived D-Day. I do not take for granted that I am fortunate to exist.
I feel the same way! My Grandpa was a tank gunner during Battle of the Bulge and to think if one split second had been changed, we might not even been thought of. Those men wouldn't have become "Grandpa" and how blessed we are that God was watching over them:)

You and the entire cast deserve the highest praise for doing justice to those heroic men and, by extension, to all men in all Allied armies for the great sacrifice they bore in order to give future generations a better tomorrow. My Dad was one of them, and though he never spoke of his experiences, nothing made him prouder than his service from D-Day to VE Day.

I absolutely love Band of Brothers. I have the box set and I must watch it every month. The actors chosen for each role were perfect for the part. You feel for what these men went through and they did justice to the real soldiers from easy company. I always cry at the last statement made by Major Winters when asked by his grandson” grandpa were you a hero in the war, and grandpa said no, but I served in a company of heroes. That must be one of the most emotional moments ever in this series. God Bless them all!!🇺🇸🇬🇧
That's not actually a quote from Winters' grandson, he was reading from a letter from Mike Ranney. Still a powerful statement. The other thing that wasn't in the series, is the letter Winters had from Speirs that readily admitted to shooting the POWs that became a huge rumor.
One of my life long friends that I grew up with is Joes great grandson, Joseph Liebgott IV. What a small world! One of my favorite series of all time
WOW. So, so impressed with this gentleman (Ross McCall) who had the honor to play a hero (Joseph Liebgott), and the understanding to appreciate it. If only all actors were like this!
I've heard vets say Band of Bros was the greatest and most accurate depiction of what it was really like.
One of my Uncles was in the 82nd Airborne and parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and fought in the Battle of the Bulge....this series gave me a real glimpse into what he must have went through and the kind of man he truly was. How he made it home, or any of these men is nothing short of a miracle. God bless them all, and God bless my 4 Uncles that fought in WWII, one making the ultimate sacrifice at 19 years old in North Africa in the Army.
my great uncle Don (my mom’s uncle) was in the 82nd Airborne and went through all of that stuff, too. He died before I was born. I would have loved to have met him though. My Grandfather was prevented from serving due to some kind of medical situation. I forget what it was.
After so long, all the actors still refer to the boots as, "Corcorans". That's epic.
Scotish!? Wtf!!! Amazing acting!! I'd never knew! I just rewatched BOB. That part when they find the camp especially finding out why they're in it hits SO hard. BOB is one the best pieces of cinema and acting ever. The fact its true events.. just wow..

He played Liegbott so well, you can see his many different emotions in so many scenes, but you gotta love when he was interpreting the German General near the end, Inwatch that scene so many times.

It was more than just a film, it was a documentary, and very crucial part of our history
My dad was a WWII veteran (South Pacific theater). Growing up, we watched a lot of war movies on TV. I was never a huge fan, but I love BoB. Such an incredible history lesson covering a very dark time, interwoven with commentary from the brave men who were in the thick of it. They truly were the Greatest Generation. It's very sad that they are all now gone. Gone, but never forgotten.
saw saving private ryan in 1998 as a freshman...veterans crying so hard in the quiet parts of the movie on omaha beach scenes...that effected me so much after that...i hated reading but i started reading ww2 books like crazy in 1998..band of brothers was one of them...master piece like this show. when i went to normandy with my wife this past june i went to look for the towns they battles took place..there was a veteran that fought in iwo jima walked into this restaurant near utah beach..and wow he was like a celebrity
Band of Brothers is by far the best series to capture WWII history.
The behind the scenes interviews, like this, are special to the fans.
The research, time, resources and money to make this series so spot-on is rewarding to many of us who enjoy military history.
I watch the series once a year and will until I pass on.
I hope the series is watched for decades to come as it’s a fair representation of the times.

Ross McCall had several key and at times harrowing scenes in the show, so cool to hear him talk about his experience.
The Cast and Crew of Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and the upcoming Masters of the Air have gone beyond making a mini-series. It is a cinematic moving masterpiece of Art that has presented and preserved history. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have done far more than anyone else to represent this important part of our world today. It’s beyond words for me, watching them all go through this incredible journey of going into the unknown is truly amazing.
I’ve always loved all the cast ever since I seen BOB when I was stationed in Germany and awaiting soldiers coming in from Fallujah at the time ( I was a US ARMY68W in 1990-2004 ) and got a chance to see Eagle Nest while I was there.. over time I would see the cast in others movies,shows , gleefully watched them and I still enjoy them so much. I just watched Ross McCalls movie, A Violent Man, and it was great.
I make my hobby learning,studying and collecting WWII history and culture of the 40’s and 50’s. I love that era and hope to go on a tour to Normandy someday soon.
But above all this, I feel the same way that Ross McCall does. To never forget the men who fought and died for us and feel obligated to live the best life possible for them. I want to make sure they didn’t die in vain.

All of these actors will carry the legacy of Easy for the rest of their lives. The series is a staple in my household, and is watched at least once a year since its release.
I have watched BoB 25 times or so. It is easily the most powerful and important piece of cinema ever produced. Everybody, not just Americans, would benefit from seeing it. I had read the book beforehand, and I can say that the guys and the production crew truly did the book justice.
I can't really put into words what this show means to me. I have watched it through at least five times and get something new with each viewing. The best docudrama ever produced about the European campaign period. These men were true heroes and deserving of being remembered in history.
I normally DESPISE ACTORS but seeing the interview with these Men,I respect them for their GOD GIVEN TALENT,Love for the Story and PROFESSIONAL DEMEANOR, NO cursing like trash...It is Amazing that some if these Actors are ENGLISH and can replicate an AMERICAN Accent SO well!! I LOVE the Series BAND OF BROTHERS!!! GOD BLESS!

I watch the series every time it's on. And every time, I cry in episode 9 when Liebgott has to tell the prisoners to stop eating. Absolutely amazing acting and tribute to absolutely the Greatest Generation.
I love listening to the actors who starred in the best series ever made, but especially Ross McCall who, everytime I hear him speak about BoB, you can tell how much it means to him and what the other actors mean to him and what the real men of Easy meant to him. Craziest part about Band of Brothers in my life was, my parents won an online contest to attend the premiere of Band of Brothers in LA, Sunday Sept. 9th, 2001. My mom called me and said she had a weird feeling about flying out there for it. Said she was going to see if she can gift the tickets to me and flights. Which i guess wasn't permitted. They've flown all over the place to vacation destinations. But this one trip she didn't feel right about. 2 days later 9/11. Not saying could've been on one of those flights, but to say she had a weird feeling, hits home strange. Just wanted to share that.

Actually met him in Philadelphia when I was an Army recruiter. Was at a band of brothers event with him, the dude they played wild bill, perconte and the actual bill Guarnere and babe Heffron.

It’s a testament to the work of the casting team that several of the actors cast to play relatively minor roles in BoB have gone on to be mega-famous. Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, James McAvoy, Stephen Graham and Andrew Scott were all largely unknown at the time.
This miniseries is a masterpiece and a true testament to the faithfulness with which these actors (and other folks making it) tried to do justice not just to the men they portrayed and their service, but also how incredibly important it was in our world's history. I've lost track of how many times I've watched it and it still moves me every single time.
What the full series on dvd box set every year since 2010 and never tire of it, still enjoy it.

Interesting in that in most cases the actors were older than the soldiers they were portraying. While Ross McCall was younger than Joseph Liebgott.

Not remotely the same as those great men, but the day I left my last Boat and retired from the Navy was literally one of the saddest days of my life. I was distraught. I had no idea who or what I was anymore. My friends, my brothers had moved on without me for the first time in my adult life. I have rarely felt that alone.
It's so awesome to see all of them, a little over 20 years later talking about how impactful this miniseries was not only to them, but to the men they portrayed. I'm glad that Major Winters and many of his men got to see their actions relived and honored through these incredible actors who honored them with their exceptional acting.
A great interview with the actor that portrayed one of my favorite men of Easy Company. Excellent. Now I have to go and binge watch Band of Brothers again.

Band of Brothers was a series touches on a level that no other WW2 movie ever did and i have seen many many movies. Hats off to all the actors, magnificent job. Of course hats off to all of my military veteran brothers both past and present.
Liebgott was one of my favorite characters in the show. The one who gives wise cracks from left field but also gets down to business in battle! Nicely done and thanks for telling the story!
This man is a legend. Who grew up as a young Freddie Mercury, and become a brave Soldier that defeated the Nazis. A Miracle indeed.

Ross McCall's work on BoB was so skillful and understated. In the interview he did with HBO, Ross said he knew he was doing ok when he met Tony To during filiming. Tony told him that they were watching the dailies to see which actors "popped" on the screen... Tony said to Ross, "You pop..."
The part where he talks about all the actors having a great time while still taking the job very seriously, laughing and carrying on, having stories he won't repeat. This is exactly what soldiers go through. We're all human, and in the long periods between combat we revert to being ourselves. It's honestly the parts we most remember.
This is what I love. Actors who actually live in the setting and year they are acting for. They are the ones who also watch their own work on screen finalized after the project.
Lots of actors these days are just going cut by cut during the set and what’s sad is some of them don’t even watch their own work on the screen after the set. After the whole set, work is done and off to the next..
Actors on BoB actually take something from it after being done..
Loved the show back then, and somehow, it has grown dearer still over the years. Great actor, great show, amazing legacy.
Such an amazing cast! I can't think of many productions with as many amazing characters/actors. Many of them I'd never seen before.

From the first time I watched it to today, I still view this as best series of all time. It was epic in every way, including the effort and seriousness these actors gave to perfecting the roles of the real men they portrayed.

Ross this interview was awesome. It’s adds so much to understanding the history and the behind the scenes that we don’t get to see. The reverence you have for your character and the Easy Company vets is really something. And the fact you did not want to see the concentration camp before your scene was genius. You wanted to display real shock at the scene and yes it comes through. So many great lines and scenes.
Thank you Ross for this interview and your story. I dig your respect for holding true to Joe. And truth be known, I cry with you every time I watch episode nine. Tanker tough,sir.👍
This miniseries was epic. The entire cast gave the performance of their respective lives. They should each be extremely proud of their efforts and dedication to the miniseries. I don't believe the cast crew could be better if they changed a single individual.
Capt Dye was an excellent soldier. He has made Hollywood get real.
If you watch movies actors frequently try to make a character their own. The members of this cast fully comprehended they were portraying and what they went through during the war. I could be wrong but it seems they remain true to the people they were representing.

Ross was actually the boy Freddie mercury in the video for the song the miracle back in 1989 -90 , alongside Freddie himself

I think, like the men they portrayed would avoid any attention to themselves, these actors who told us the stories of those men who lived, and died thru those days, wouldnt want the attention. Refreshing and quite sobering to watch an actor whos not all about themselves....thank you to everyone involved in bringing this masterpiece to us. God bless the U.S.A.
