It's okay for a woman to treat a man like that nobody says nothing. And he wasn't there at the start but the guy stepped up and made up for it by being there. Whit was warning Lily about needing to be as extra careful. Lily replied with "just because your baby died it doesn't mean mine will." Lily immediately felt terrible but yeah, awful comment and can see why Whit was very hurt.
