I too am a descendant of Esther and Joseph. I am grateful for your presentation here and am taking my daughter to Philadelphia in the spring to visit their grave at Laurel Hill. We are currently reading a book about Esther and studying the letters between Joseph and George Washington.
Thank you gentlemen for providing your talks here I am starting work on a project regarding my family history which I've found out happens to include famous historical figures instead of just everyday Americans and yall are giving me amazing insights I'm planning a graphic novel/zine exploring historical stories is ways historians look at them like stories instead of just facts
Washington didn’t want the money to go directly to the troops because he was afraid that the troops would drink the money away. So, he instructed Esther to donate winter uniforms to the troops. After raising a lot of money, she and Benjamin Franklin’s daughter (and other mothers of the Revolution) bought fabric sewed uniforms for the troops in lieu of donating money.
