    To be fair a lot of the plagues of Egypt do have scientific explanations
    The main one I remember is that the firstborn sons dying can be explained by a sick harvest because the eldest sons were fed the most food so a meal that might just make the rest of the family sick could be fatal to them

    • @TF2CrunchyFrog
      @TF2CrunchyFrog 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The simple explanation is that the "Angels of the Lord" who in the Old Testament/Torah story are the ones going around killing those First Born sons in a single night were Israelite assassins who went into the houses of their Egyptian neighbors and murdered them on order of their cult leader Moses. Remember, in the Old Testament is specifically says the Israelites living as workers (not slaves, as the propaganda claims) in Egypt's cities were told to slaughter a goat and smear its blood on their outside door frames as a sign for the "angels" to pass their house by. Which also means Israelites were living next door with normal Egyptians. And remember, Moses the foundling baby was raised in the palace alongside the Pharaoh's own son!
      Until adult Moses then got this idea into his head that "the tribes of Israel" (who originally were nomadic tribes living in Palestine) needed to stop mingling with other ethnic groups and being "polluted" by their culture and their gods and by intermarrying with them. (Historians even believe Moses got the idea of Monotheism (worshipping a single god) in ancient Egypt: Egyptian Pharaoh Amenhotep IV (aka. Amenophis IV) (who reigned from 1353-1336 BCE or 1350-1334 BCE) changed his throne name to Akhenaten aka. Echnaton as he tried to establish a monotheistic worship of a sun deity named _Aten_ aka. _Aton._ Akhenaten/Echnaton abolished the worship of all other gods in Egypt at the time and founded a new capital city called _Achet-Aton_ "Horizon of Aton" (the ruins of which were rediscovered in the 19th century and given the name _Amarna)._ The priesthood and most Egyptians were not thrilled about it and it never really caught on.
      Similarly, the Israelite tribes worshipped multiple deities, among them the weather god Ba'al (whose holy animal was the bull and who was thought to sit on his throne on high mountains and throw lightning bolts), until Moses enforced monotheism and the worship of YHW (Yehova or Yahwe), another god who incidentally sat on his throne on a high mountain and threw lightning bolts and only talked exclusively to His high priest Moses... funny how that goes. That's what the Old Testament story of the Golden Calf is all about!

  • @lucasstrong9208
    @lucasstrong9208 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It has always been my understanding that with scorpions, the general rule is bigger (and less vibrantly colored) is actually less deadly, because they can use size to hunt and thus have less potent venom, while tiny (and often bright) scorpions are just doom with lots of limbs.

    • @TF2CrunchyFrog
      @TF2CrunchyFrog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rule of thumb is: If a scorpion has large pincers, it usually has a smaller stinger and less potent venom.
      If a scorpion is small with smaller pincers but a large stinger, then it relies on its powerful venom to hunt and defend itself and is thus potentially more dangerous to humans.

    "They could have come up with something better for this."
    Lewis looks at it from the PoV of sitting in a climate controlled room in 2022 and the account being entirely made up instead of the PoV of the cultural memory of Bronze Age peoples whose survival centered on agriculture & early metalworking. It's not entirely unlikely that a sudden climate event could have: caused massive flooding pulling red sediments into the water colouring it red; increasing the area of wetlands and thus made a huge breeding ground for insects; those insects then eat an unprecedented amount of the crops the people depended on; and also spread diseases; and also attracted a large wave of insectivores (like frogs).
    I wouldn't be surprised if it was a condensing down of the events of the Late Bronze Age collapse (which did give Canaanites like Phoenicians autonomy from Egyptian control). Climate changes destroyed many regional livelihoods & economies which also pushed many people into different "trades" such as piracy, pillaging, & looting.
    The combination of all of these things obliterated almost every civilization from the Mediterranean through Mesopotamia within ~50 years-and those which survived were hobbled. Remember, bronze (and thus most of their technology of the day) is mostly made of tin & copper which are mined in different places and were thus traded from *at least* as far as Sardinia to Afghanistan. The destruction of the center of this trade network not only led to disease & starvation in that area, but meant that bronze became anywhere from unsustainably expensive to flat out impossible to produce.
    The point being, that the era would have been well remembered and stories would have been told about it for a very long time, especially in the Egyptian-controlled Levant where Exodus takes place. A modern equivalent might be, for example, electricity just not working for 2-3 generations. Imagine how hard it would be for that 4th generation to figure out how to start using it again.

    Historians note a few different small migrations from Egypt as possible sources of the Israelite founding myth. These happened in the late second millennium BCE, 12th, 13th century-ish.
    The water clock was evidenced in Egypt from, at the latest, the 16th century BCE. So if the plagues did happen (they didn't), the Egyptians, at least the temple priests, would have been able to track the time.

    I don't think the firstborn son thing in the Bible stories was that they vanished from the timeline, if your grandfather was a firstborn son and he died, then all his kids wouldn't disappear, the firstborn sons just died in the story at that time and everything they did would still have happened they are just now dead. (This is way more thought that fanciful stories of terrible things a loving god supposedly did in a book of fanciful stories deserve.)(don't be religious, what are you, 5? How about Santa, still believe in a guy who comes down the chimney of a billion homes in one evening? The tooth fairy, fancy that's not really your parents putting a coin or two under your pillow?
