The Aqua Salt is a fave fixed blade here. It weighs nothing, it's razor sharp, and the H1 is the best steel I've used in salt water. Highly recommended. -nutn

Great review Nutn! Wish you had discussed/demonstrated various carry options in and around the water. So many opinions about wearing wet suit and keeping a blade on the a waist belt vs wrist vs ankle etc. Your thoughts?

Thanks for finally reviewing the resurrected Aqua Salt! I purchased one as soon as it came back into production. I agree about the handle. I wish they would make a non-coated yellow handled version, in addition to the cool blacked out model. Also, just my mileage, the "rust spots" on the H-1 steel are probably mineral(iron) deposits from the water. I got some similar spots on my H-1 ladybug, but it came right off with a tooth brush. Keep up the knife reviews, Nutn! I love it when you go into the details of a knife.

nutnfancy So the handle is big enough for a grown man? Some of Spyderco's fixed knife handles seem a bit short.

The rust spots on the Pacific salt are the result of residua from the metal on the stamp used to put the H1 logo on the knife. Wipe that off and the rest of the knife should not rust.

I haven't watched the review, but I wanted to share my real world experience with an H1 Spyderco. I worked on dive boats in the Caribbean for several years, and a few of us picked up H1's for daily use. I carried mine clipped inside the waistband of my swim trunks for a couple of years, and if I wasn't sweating all over it in the heat, it was submerged in seawater for up to an hour or so at a time 2-4 times a day. I won't say that I never rinsed it with fresh water., but I'm certain that I never did it more than once every few weeks, and sometimes not for a few months. No traces of corrosion whatsoever. The edge held up great, and that "ugly" hole for thumbing them open worked perfectly for me. TL;DR: The H1 still is no BS when it comes to not corroding in the crappiest environments. Also, if you want a free one, mine is on the edge of the Bahamian shelf somewhere well south of Gun Cay.... damn it. (It's been there since 2010 and I guarantee it's still 100% corrosion free.) EDIT: To be clear, the H1 steel *can't* rust. It isn't simply corrosion resistant. It's definitely the **** in seawater environments.

Love how Nutn and Doodle dated themselves over that copyright friendly Slowpoke sticker. It is interesting that you showed the rust on your classic Pacific folder, my Caspian blade also has pitting at the same places (namely the H1 logo). Guess the laser etching compromises the steel's immunity to corrosion at the molecular level or something. I missed my chance to pick it up years ago and now its back!!

As a avid snorkeler and diver I really want a better sheath that's more fitted and sturdy for under water use. Either like a sleeve for calf carry or a thigh carry option. I never use arms cuz its not ambidextrous. But each blade I get is okay, but the sheath sucks for all carry options. Its never comfortable and slides arounds

Great review. I carried Salt 1 for years. Beat the snot out of it. One issue I had because of humidity and sweat with all my other knives was rust. H1 negates that nearly 100%. However for any of you on the fence I have to say H1 steel is probably one of the best every day work steels. It's relatively hard, holds a good edge and can be sharpened easily on a random rock if need be.

Another great review. I love hearing about the different situations involving being out on the water. I've got a quick question for you. How would you concealed carry on a boat? Not swimming but prepared for accidental submersion without losing the gun. I'm not worried about needing to use it on the boat. It's more about the area I have to go through to go to and from the boat and no place to disarm. Any advice would be appreciated. Regardless, keep up the great reviews. Always informative to hear your perspective and experiences.

Was a commercial diver for 7 years.
The one you don't see is the one that gets you, knife just won't matter.
When tender, boat operator, other diver say, "Did you see that seal" ?
Nope, "But it was right near you" nope.
A seal round here goes about 400lbs.
Sure I've seen 'em zooming around me like a pickpocket on speed.
    So many I have not.

I have the original AquaSalt yellow handle PE. Actually bought it for a "kitchen knife" application for rust resistant properties. Also have the Pacific Salt Spyderedge. The Spyderedge models seem to hold edge far longer than the PE counterparts. H1 is a love hate relationship for me. I hope the day will come that Spyderco does some sort of limited run in the AquaSalt line with the same steel they used in the SpydieChef folder, since that steel is nearly as rust resistant as H1 and holds a better edge.

Serrated edge H1 blades cut faster, longer. The plain edge version will dull relatively rapidly, due do H1 properties. I usually don't favor serrations, but in this case, the serrated edge compensates for the poor edge retention of H1.

I watch the Blade HQ video on Salt folders and they noticed it rusted right where they did the etching and the hardware. Looks like the same place yours rusted. Just curious after you cleaned the rust up did it continue to rust in that same spot or was it just rusting the etching off? Also I'm considering a knife for a combo tactical blade/bushcrafting blade. Do you think this fits the bill?

Have seen knives pop out of sheaf underwater we have a spiral wire attached usually.
Always carry one when diving in the uk but have dived on holiday before now without a knife just have to trust the guides feels wrong though.
I know a commercial diver says the worst areas are Malaysian and he would not dive without a knife on one leg and a knife on each arm or a knife and line cutter.
But only because of all the trailing line in the water.
    Looks a bit overkill though
Just remembered a story he was an Aussie and in their army he became a 'marksmen' so they present him with his 7.62 when he finishes his service.
Later he is out shooting Roos laying the rifle across the hood of his tricked up pickup truck has a lovely top dollar paint job as the roo jumps up down he adjusts his aim and boom.
Massive great groove across the hood.

Don't expect the H1 steel to get the job done for fine-carving/shaving/wood work etc. It's edge is not as sharp as other steels imo (I've owned the Aqua Salt D. Knife for over a year). It's edge do harden with use... and it can perform okay on basic tasks (card board cutting/ cutting tape etc.), but not as with ease as other steels.
The H1 is excellent for it's intended use: activities in or around water (due to less chance of rusting when compared to other steels). And the shape of the Aqua Salt D. Knife is great for stabbing fishes. One of my old coworker was a free-dive spear fishing fanatic, and he always carried his Aqua to his trips.
The most current model of the Aqua Salt D. Knife has the option to have the black coating on the blade. It's marketed as a Tactical-friendly knife (I can see the military personnels who go out onto seas often using this). As I mentioned before, the shape of the blade would suffice for tactical usage. Just don't expect the knife to perform like other steels when it comes to the sharpness of the blade.

I look at the shark attack chances like this: Maybe less people are attacked by sharks then are struck by lightning. But virtually everyone attacked by a shark was in the ocean at the time, so I'd say being in the ocean greatly increases your odds.
If you could be attacked by a shark while golfing or working in a field, I bet shark attacks would go up quite a bit. And I would also guess that if carrying a knife would give people even a small chance to fight off lightning, I bet many would carry one...just in case. Certainly during a thunderstorm. So why not carry a knife while in the ocean...just in case.
