I’ve had really good luck with mixing neem oil and dr. bronner’s castille soap in the peppermint scent. It’s heavily diluted and put into a weed sprayer. I try to spray everything down every few weeks, but any time I notice a problem, I spray daily for two weeks and it’s always been successful for me.
I also use the Dr. Bronner’s peppermint soap with peppermint essential oil I mix it with water in a spray bottle but I don’t use neem oil I spray my plants at least once a week and I also use it to clean my leaves and I do not have fungus gnats I bottom water all my plants as well and since I’ve been doing this I’ve had no issues with pest at all
I love de. Its never failed me. Especially on more sensitive plants that react badly towards any kind of chemical even the organic ones. I had a bad outbreak of mealy bugs on a portulacaria afra and the de wiped them out. Patience is key with any pesticide and sometimes a few applications. I use de in a spray bottle with water. You just need to let it dry and wait a few days. Then I do it again in a week. I even use it in my garage to keep out bugs or kill them if they get in there. It works!
@mikekufner1192 I didn't know you could use de in a water bottle ..😱😱😱 I have a small outbreak in my Hoya's. I am going to try this. I tried the alcohol route and sprayed them. Eck, eck, eck...I can't STAND the smell of alcohol, now...😂
I use Bonide Systemic Granules. Whenever I pot a plant I sprinkle it on the top of the soil. Handy tip: put it in a plastic squeeze catchup dispenser that has the snap close lid for easier application. Reapply as directed. I also use horticultural grade charcoal in the bottom of my pots to keep soil fresh. I also use Captain Jack’s Dead Bug spray on them. Great video Harli.
I’ve been using liquidirt for about a year & it has been great for my plants. I have a bunch of empty gallon jugs that fill with water & let sit overnight with the caps off to let the chlorine dissipate, then add the liquidirt to water my plants.
I use an empty 20gal aquarium as a mini greenhouse. The led lights work really well for propagations. I walled the interior with some reflective bubble wrap from one of my packages so it contains and concentrates the light but I’m sure aluminum foil would work just fine and is totally not necessary. The only downside is not being completely sealed off because of the filter/hood but i use a hand towel to cover it. Hope this helps anyone. 💛
I wanted to quickly share my experience with mosquito bits for anyone wondering. I Purchased them 3 months into my houseplant journey in 2020, and I never had a fungus gnat problem. I now know it worked, because I ran out and figured I didn't need it. Long story short, I now know what fungus gnats are lololol. Diatomaceous earth didn't work well for me, give me the bits!!
The plastic saucers Harli loved had been unavailable for a while. I found out last October when I tried to order them. However, I found another brand, called "Truedays" which is similar but even thicker and stronger. They come in either a 15-saucer pack (6, 8 & 10") or 5 or 10-saucer pack in either 6", 8", 10" or 12." I have been using them since last October, and they really work great! I hope this information helps!
Thank you for saying how you apply the captain jacks. I asked on a few pages bc I wasn’t sure if you were supposed to rinse it off or let it dry there- it doesn’t really say. That was really helpful!
I bought liquidirt specifically because of your rave reviews of it and I just have to say: you are so right! I think I was probably under-fertilizing my plants because I was SO afraid of accidentally giving them chemical burns, so pretty much all new growth just stopped. The plants weren’t dying but they certainly weren’t thriving. I started slow with liquidirt and just the small bit I gave them initially really packed a punch! I’ve only been using it about every other water now and the difference is incredible. I thought my Hoya Compacta was just never going to grow ever again. One water with liquidirt and BAM! New growth point from the base AND new leaves on the stem simultaneously! I seriously can’t recommend the stuff enough and now I 100% understand why you’re always talking about it! It deserves the hype!
I didn't think I'd see a difference with liquidirt so fast. That stuff is amazing. So glad I finally got it! My hoyas are loving it, they dry out much faster and are just pushing out that new growth.
Im obsessed with your content. I used to only watch Planterina until I discovered you by TH-cam's suggestion. Thanks to you I took the leap and bought my first online orders of plants from Etsy. I have only ever bought plants in person. I can't wait to unbox them. To make sure I'm set up for success I just used your discount code and bought liquidirt. Can't wait to try it on all my plants
I bought Liquid Dirt after watching your videos two months ago. OMG... This is top down the best fertilizer I have ever used! Thank you for introducing this product to us!
I also use Liqui-Dirt, on your suggestion, and it has been a game changer. I use it on all my plants every time I water. All my plants are putting out new leaves now and look beautiful! Thanks for the suggestion!
used your code for the liquidirt a few months ago and love it. it's a little tedious to mix up, but still easier than having multiple nutrients and fertilizers because I can use this on my plants in hydroponics and in soil. really nice to be able to use just one product!
I started using liqui-dirt per your rec and I’ve seen MAJOR growth in a few of my plants, specifically my string of hearts, calathea ornata, first ever growth on my Florida select croton, & more!! I love it. One random thing I have found is I really like using old Tazo iced tea plastic pitchers for watering they are cute and a decent size to just like bring to a room. Also hit up Walmart for pots and stands if you never have, they have some cute ass options!
Had my first Thrips attack. The only product that worked was Safer Insecticidal Soap. I do use the Captain Jacks dead Bug for all other insects. Informative video. Thanks.
Great video Harli. I'm quite new to plants and have been finding many of your videos really helpful. I just mixed my own soil too with some perlite, orchard bark, cactus soil and houseplant compost. No idea if it will be good yet but I'll see how my plants go! I would personally really love to see how you mix your soil, the ratios etc. I don't know if you've already done a video on that? I would also REALLY love to see a guide on bottom watering! I know it may sound silly but as a beginner it's hard to navigate how long should I leave the plants in the water, how much should I put in, can I add liquid fertiliser to the water as they are being bottom watered etc. Maybe a "back to basics" video where you could teach us newbies some of those things? xxx
Hi ! I loved this video! Food grade Diatomaceous earth is great! I first discovered it when my pet had fleas! Sometimes I will leave it all over the plant for some time…not too pretty but really works! The trays are great…I will use them to repot or anything not to make a mess in the kitchen 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Will try the Liquiddirt and Captain Jacks. RePotme MSU (weak) ,Kelp, and calcium are different things that I use with orchids. When I can I use rainwater on my plants . If a plant is having a problem that needs humidity…I’m finding /experimenting that the plastic zipper bags that you buy comforters in are great( my orchid is growing new roots!,!) Thankyou so much for this video!
Because of you I learned about and now use Neem oil, Mosquito bits and Liquidirt. Love them. Bought Bonide systemic granules for pests because I didn’t know about the brew. Next time maybe. I use the orchid spray too. Always have used that on my orchids. You look so pretty! Thanks for the video.
I have been using the orchid fertilizer on Hoyas and they ❤️ it. I started using Liquidirt and look forward to seeing how my plants do with it. I do need to be consistent with neem oil.
Yes!! No one ever recommends chopsticks! Lol I love them for plants like my inch plants! Super easy to just chop and prop! I also use them when repoting smaller plants, like succulents.
After seeing your video on Liquidirt I decided to buy it. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get it through your link because I live in Canada. Either way, thank you so much! My Hoya Karii (Which I’ve had for about 2 1/2 years) had five leaves since I’ve had her and although she’s healthy, she never gave me any new growth. Well, I started using this product and a few weeks later she started growing a leaf! Since the beginning of spring, she’s given me 4 new leaves! For the D earth I have found it very helpful to put some in a spray bottle and mix it up and spray down the leaves of the plants with it. It got rid of my mealybugs when nothing else did it! Basically, it just dries on the leaves and kills the bugs.
@@jenniferhayes3640 You are not wrong at all. But it’s kind of hard to sprinkle on the leaves and make it stick. But if you put it in a water/spray bottle and shake it very well and spray it on your plants it will dry on the leaves and kill the bugs that way.
This video just saved my life!! 😹 I have done little to no pest prevention care in the time I’ve been collecting my plants and just discovered ✨thrips✨ that I think came from my really long Brazil that I don’t check up on too often. Now, half of my collection has thrips and it’s pretty bad. I’m really stressing about the time it’s going to take to keep up on the pest maintenance since I don’t have much free time as is and I’m just trying to figure out the easiest and most effective way to take care of this. I went online and bought some neem oil, captain jacks, and diatomaceous earth…I guess I’m just wondering what you might do if you were me? Should I start by wiping every leaf down, spraying it with captain jacks and let that dry, then sprinkle some diatomaceous earth on the tops (I also bottom water) and then just repeat the captain jacks treatment along with neem oil every week or so? Would that be too often? And if I’m using the captain jacks, should I still do the neem oil or will that be too much at once?? Any input you might be willing to share would be so very appreciated!!
Thanks for the awesome video! I always look forward to them. I was in the hospital a few months ago for about a week and your videos helped me through! Thanks Harli ☺️
Hi Harli, thank you for this very helpful video. As to Liquidirt, I tried it after you mentioned it before and YES! I had Hoya BLOOMS this year! On variegated kentana, cumingiana and macrophylla albo marginata. Enjoy these type of product videos as always pick up a tip or two. 😘
Definitely getting that dead bug concentrate this weekend!! Love the video!!!! Would love to see a new one where you elaborate on how to reuse soil... How you do it and all that jazz! 💙
After seeing this, I used the food grade diatomaceous earth that I had in the house for flea/pest control. I mixed it in my soil and put it around the base of my plants. It worked great! I haven't had any pests since I used it about 6 months ago. Could be luck and circumstance for sure but I can't ignore that I haven't had a pest outbreak since. Thanks Haili!
My African violets bloomed after adding Liquid Dirt to their watering. It blew my mind!!!! ☺️😋 I wish I could post a pic to show how AMAZING they look!!!
Along with the pest management products, I keep a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol in case I need to quickly blast a mealybug or something, also handy for sanitizing the scissors and water meter when needed.
Love this video! I could always use suggestions and help when it comes to products. I bought mosquito bits based on your video a few years back. It's been amazing! I rarely get knats, and I give a lot of credit to MB.
I love neem oil for preventing mold/mildew especially in the cooler months. I like Schultz brand liquid plant food, it comes with an easy dropper so it’s super quick to add the drops into a watering can or bottle. I use the plastic saucers too. I also like to have the little tiny plant snippers for my indoor plants. Great for easy snipping of leaves and stems especially for smaller plants.
I’m a new subscriber and I noticed the shortness of breath and immediately I’m like “let me go to the comments to see if she was pregnant when she shot this” 😂 momma of a 2.5 yr old here and new plant mom! ❤
I also use Jacks when I want a higher Npk for soil I use foxfarm ocean forest I add charcoal bark pumice and a lil extra worm castings and of course some osomocote plus
I really like Bonide systemic granules along with Captain Jacks, neem oil smells so bad but I still use it preventativelt and for cleaning leaves! oh and a hose and rubbing alcohol on q tips haha
IKR. There's something about that smell that I can't deal with. Other people complain worse about fish emulsion but for me that's not nearly as bad as need oil. Yuck.
@@jamesjoseph9721 Neem oil to me smells like rotten garlic drowned in rotten lemon and soaked in sweaty gym socks🤢 It’s wretched. Fish emulsion was not quite as gnarly to me but I didn’t use it for all that long, only a month or two. Fish tank water was good too but made my whole room smell like fish tank when I watered worse than the emulsion!!!😂 Liquidirt is my new fave and captain jacks has almost no smell unless i use a LOT inside, love that odorless life haha
I'll put the cafeteria tray into my grow room. I think it will make cleanup quick when I pot up a small plant. Some soil always seems to spill, and it will catch it, and easily pour back into the soil container. Thanks for the idea.
Yesss Harli! This video was great! I actually just purchased the Liquidirt and used your link and code 😄 I use my left over coffee grounds as a natural fertilizer. I drink it every morning so I just dump the grounds in a bowl and put it on top of the soil. Plus adds a good smell every time you water, if you like coffee ☕ 😋
I use Liquid Dirt but I also add Super Thrive to the water mix! 😊. I pretty much use everything else that you’ve recommended. Thank you for sharing! 💜💚🪴
These are all really good recommendations, I use a bunch of the same products. I'm taking deep breaths with you as I listen to you talk so fast lol, but I like this style where it's a lot of useful information that you are not dragging out for an hour :)
Good stuff! Thank you for sharing, Harli! I I use Espoma Indoor Liquid Plant Food. I have over 150 plants in my collection and one bottle lasts me about 10 months. You can find them in any hardware stores or online.
Really great video! I have had such good luck using liquidirt since you made the recommendation! I definitely believe that it’s gotten my hoyas to blooms
Ps I love getting the $3 boot trays from IKEA to use instead of buying a bunch of the clear trays, which I’ve purchased the ones you have and LOVE them! Just not feasible since I have 100+ plants 😬
I use dough box tops for trays. They are bigger and have a nice lip for water. I purchase these at a kitchen supply store. Restaurants use them to poof pizza dough.
I use mosquito bits too, but diatomaceous earth has been the most effective against fungus gnats. But what works best for me is a thick layer on the top soil.
Thank you so much for suggesting the mosquito bits tea! I was hesitant to buy the mosquito bits because I was afraid my son would pick them out and put them in his mouth but I will try the tea version instead!
I love liquid dirt! It is amazing. I think there is allot of bad info out there. Works great for me and yep hoyas are blooming!!!! I don't like MG because of bad stuff they have done but did use their orchid spray because I couldn't' find another. I now mix a Schultz orchid food into my sprayers and they (hoya and orchids) both love! LMAO I have cafeteria trays too! Life hack!
I needed this video!! I’m a newbie to plant growing and have no idea what fertilizers I need. I have some Neem oil, worm castings, orchid bark, fish emulsion, perlite, and sone soil mix. I just heard about cocoa coir and wondered if I could shred up an outdoor hanging planter one to use? I’ve used Mosquito Bits before. I found mixing them in a tea was so stinky! I had to move those plants onto the deck til the smell went away. The dry bits don’t stink at all!I’m definitely getting the LiquiDirt and sphagnum moss!
You can buy coconut coir in bricks that expand when you add water to them. You can even find them in pet shops in the reptile section as a substrate (Eco Earth is the brand I usually find).
Man o man Harli keeps working hard on videos even though she is out of breath because her pregnancy. I stan this woman.

What a great idea! I’ll have to try this
Yes great idea! What are the measurements you use?
does it hide the neem oil smell? that would be a huge bonus! i'll definitely try this

Lol, one of my former tenants left us a 40" Sony flat screen and a 4 post bed! We were happy he broke his lease :)

I use the mosquito bits and systemic granules mixed into the top of the soil. I also water with mosquito bit tea ALL OF THE TIME.
"they're gonna get cheese grated" 😂
Just ordered my Liquidirt!! Can't wait to use it!
Thanks for the video. Gave me alot of insight. Definitely will be buying liquid dirt
The serving tray idea is GREAT
I just bought some liquidirt.. I am excited. Honestly been wanting to purchase for a really long time!
Yay! Have a great day ☺️💗 also how is your prayer plant that has spider mites?
Heard a lot about Liquid Dirt, thanks for the discount just ordered it.
Great tips, thank you!
I agree that is the best New Zealand Sphagnum Moss.
Good stuff! Thank you for sharing, Harli! I
I use Espoma Indoor Liquid Plant Food. I have over 150 plants in my collection and one bottle lasts me about 10 months. You can find them in any hardware stores or online.
Harli, I love your content. Please never stop
Can’t wait to try the liquidirt, just ordered it!
Mosquito bits and neem oil have been a must have for me as well.
What about the velvety leaf plants and spraying Captain jack or Neem oil?? Any results you can share??
I use Cafeteria trays, so handy
Harli, how do you feel about systemic granules for pest control? Have you ever tried it?
I use them in my soil mix
I use Espoma indoor fertilizer, love it!
I use dough box tops for trays. They are bigger and have a nice lip for water. I purchase these at a kitchen supply store. Restaurants use them to poof pizza dough.
I loooove Sphagnum too. Moss is boss 😎
Girl you are GLOWING!
Guys they have those hard plastic saucers at Dollar Tree as well!
Life hack!
Liquidirt has made such a difference! Thank you!
I really like the idea of mixing all your soil into a bucket because I’m always pulling out my huge bowl and mixing each time. I hate that.
This was a game changer for me too! I keep mine in a large plastic tote w lid and use a plastic cup as my scoop. 🙂
Would you mind doing another of your potting soil!!
I also love liquidirt. It’s great!!
I used Osmocote Plus (Pink Bottle) during repot For fertizing I Ilightly use Foxfarm Bommerang, Kelp me kelp you and Wholly Mackerel.
can we get a video on monstera vs split leaf philodendron? i cant find a clear answer anywhere!
Oooooh for fungus gnats I use nematodes 🤩 I have never seen a fungus gnats since
Whoah! 1 minute!! Super early. Love your videos. Have a great Monday!
Have you ever tried composting and making your own worm castings?
