Genuine XP & Windows 7 (or Windows 8, which can be upgraded to from XP), are cheap. Just but at the right places, the Tech Power Up site has some links on promos.

I built a sleeper for work. We work hard at work but only for short periods of time. Sometimes we have a lot of down time and we're allowed to play games as long as the work gets done for the day. So we knock it out and then you can do w/e you want pretty much except sleep. The only problem is the work PCs are very limited and cant really play anything great. So I decided to bring in a mini itx from home. The only problem was the IT guys were not as thrilled as I was about the RGB fans and lights and soon I was told by my boss it needed to go back home :(. So to get around this I took one of the old towers we had in the storage closet that were discarded by the IT guys. I pretty much did the same thing you did but no where near as nice I just needed functionality. It worked great and is much lower key and I've gotten a few weird looks by the IT guys as to why i'd want to run the old obsolete tower but I just tell them I like it and they just shrug. Now I can game at 144hz :) on an old sleeper pc at work. It's great!

Yes, 32gb is still overkill for gaming. It makes a very negligible amount of performance difference. Mostly you just want it to be as fast as your mobo/processor allows. Also he didn't want to purchase a hole saw because he didn't wanna spend the cash for something he would not use much after completing the build...so why would he spend just as much or more on a step bit? Those things can be anywhere from 20-60 dollars at lowe's and I will only buy one if my employer is letting me use the company card. To be fair though, you can find them pretty cheap online, but they dull too fast to be worth it.

I think these builds could be very nostalgic for older generations who wants to re-live the experience of firing one of their childhood PC-s up.

The problem with mixing an old cabinet with new parts is the temperature that is concentrated since those cabinets are a can without good ventilation, if you are going to do something like this liquid cooling It can be a good choice.

Nice! If i were to daily use it, i would drill some more holes at the bottom of the case and install ~1 inch feet to give some leverage and breathing room for the GPU. Great work overall!

I did a sleeper last year, using (I dunno maybe) ten yeard old pc case. I don't have power tools so what I did was wash & repaint.
Ended up moved the components to new case half a year later due to lack of airflow, lol.

Too bad you didn't set a bluray reader, could be great for a htpc ! And will look even more convincing, and I would have loved to see the HDD write/read led lights up

It looks amazing. Got a couple of questions tho. No judgement, this is just my OCD talking (apologies if this is annoying). Here we go:
-Why only a single 120mm intake?
You should have room for a 140, maybe two 120 if you take off the GPU shroud or use a shorter GPU.
-Same goes for the back, why only a 90mm fan? You should have room for a 120mm or two 80mm there.
-And why not add bottom intake fans? Looks like it should fit, worse case scenario switch to a mobo that has the 16x in the first slot
I mean, 70 under full load is _excellent_ , but you could have gotten even better results with less noise. More OC/noise headroom.

When I build something like this I call it a theft proof PC. The firs one I did was upgrading an old WANG 286 to a really nice 386. The original WANG motherboard was huge with a bunch of ports to the right of the standard AT keyboard socket location. The left half used standard AT mounting screw locations so putting the normal baby AT 386 board in was simple. The open spot to the right, beneath the power supply, got blocked with aluminum flue tape inside and out.

Giving it slightly taller feet, and making a hole in the bottom of the case & putting in a 240mm fan filter you'll probably get more airflow too the gpu.

Go to a university in the summer and talk to someone in the IT department. They're almost always throwing out old components and upgrading public computers before students come back in the fall.

2:11 I'm pretty sure that is a SFX form factor power supply with an additional space for its fan. You could pick up any modern SFX PSU and use it in that case without modifications.

To the best of my knowledge emachines came out around 07!
And I was looking at the older (new old stock) ext tower cases, and ya,they arent giving them away, and may need moding to fit in a modern board!
