I heard this when I was 11 at a large campsite (GSA, mostly American military dependents) at Lake Motosu in the mountainous area near Fuji. A group of men sang it acapello while the full moon rose above us. I have never forgotten it, and this is the first time Ive heard it again, 66 years later. Id love to hear it with Japanese instruments and the deep male voices.
This is one of the famous songs that represent Japan, and is also sung in foreign countries in their native languages. It beautifully expresses the contrast between the eternity of the moonlight and the prosperity and decline of the human world, with descriptions of people and scenery related to an old castle. It is said that the lyricist Bansui Doi made these lyrics inspired by the old castle sites of Tsurugajō in Aizuwakamatsu City, and Aobajō in Sendai City. Composer Rentarō Taki added a melody to them and sent it to a music composition contest. This song was selected along with two other songs that he composed.
this is one of my favorite folk songs along with "Takeda No Komoriuta". there is beauty in the moonlight contrasting the despair of human vanity against the march of time.

I have listened to Japanese folk songs like this literally all my life (being half Japanese), though until just this year, this particular song had never been one I particularly liked... until I read a translation of the lyrics and really listened to it. Now it's one of my favorites. I find it beautifully melancholy. My entire soul mourns, but the song also makes me very happy at the same time. Thank you for posting this one. If I may suggest, though, I think if you sang this in duet with a baritone it would sound even better (not that you didn't do a good job on it yourself; you did very well).

For me, the melody conjures an image of a life left reflecting a time before desire brought destruction through time as the radiance of the moon washes and brings marred landscape back to solitude. Has the lady gone blind with age and wonders if the moon shines this night over the ruined castle? I am not familiar with the origins of this song. If someone know's I'd enjoy the real meaning.
Stunningly beautiful song. Surprisingly similar to many folk songs here in the Faroe Islands. Similar melody, mood and melancholic atmosphere. Pretty shocking and awesome that there are so many similarites from two countries that are so distant from each other. Maybe it's because we're both isolated island nations? Who knows!
I wish that you would have included some Meiji-era photos of ruined castles. Many were still standing at the time, but warped due to age and neglect. Also, they would fit the time the lyrics of the song were written...
Anime introduced me to this song. The melody is very depressing which I suppose it the entire point. Frankly I'd rather just read the lyircs if they're just telling a short sad story. Google translate butchers the translation though, so here I sit watching this video at x2 speed instead.
