    Great moves by Burling. Slingsby really was thinking "I would've done the same thing"

    Burling is a stone cold killer.
    Bloody good on him. Now the opposition know to give him space, or to get messed up.
    Burling is to be commended for putting the smackdown on these teams after spending a long time coming to grips with the boat using his old team. Now they are up to speed, expect to see lots of fantastic sailing as the Kiwis show just what a unified team of world-beating boat fliers can do.
    I can't wait, and I don't mind watching the other teams fight for second place.

    Slingsby bore down to the line for maximum speed (about 90 clicks) closing the separation between the two boats. Burling reminded him who had priority and Slingsby stuffed it down the mine. If Slingsby was so worried about safety he should have kept clear himself. Every other helmsman would have done the same as Burling ... including Tom Slingsby

    The same thing happens at any given club day in NZ every weekend. Go hard or go home.

    • @AORD72
      @AORD72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, And I bet in every club in AU as well. This guy is delusional. Kiwis were 100% right tactically. The AU boat should have sailed lower to protect their position.

    Slingsby literally said in the press conference before hand all the boats are skippered by ruthless athletes, all all of them will use the rules to their advantage ... and that he (Slingsby) certainly would.

    Just another winging Aussie, we all know Slingsby would have done the exact same move if positions were the other way around. he's done it before. People saying this is dangerous- they've built these boats to go that fast with the same sailing rules. if the sailors think its too dangerous they can go back to P class or Optimists.

    slingsby said if burling wanted the point he could have has it, but i didnt see the aussie turning to windward and giving up first place. he could have predicted the move by burling and avoided the risk and damage, but he didnt, he went for the line....fair play kiwis and tough luck aussies

    Great sailing by Burling! What they didn't show was the moves Canada had made against the kiwis coming to the final mark, that luff was 100% deserved. And the Aussies wouldn't have given an inch unless it was taken

    That's racing. He's coming into the overlap like Max Verstappen shooting off Hamilton or Leclerc. I love this Kiwi Badass mode.

    Nope - the moral is that the game is not over until the finish line is crossed

      True true. Although I expect the others will give Burling a wide berth in future!

      @@FastForwardSailing f off, you are being ridiculous. They were within the rules. If you have done years of racing you would understand that is a normal situation. the Australians should have covered by sailing lower then the would have never lost it.

    Totally legal. Yes, it's dangerours to turn these boats quickly at high speed, but it is the F1 of sailing.

    Totally legal move and a good one .. most of the fleet would luff their opponent if they got half a chance .. but it looked incredibly dangerous at those speeds ..

    Its call racing… if there is an opportunity and you do go for it, them better stay home or go cruising. Fair play and great racing from the kiwis.

    We don't watch this to see gentlemen being polite. They are racing to win not to be second. Look at Slingsby's record. Good move!

  • @CheersWarren
    @CheersWarren 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Legal move but ‘room and Opportunity’ to keep clear should be considered especially with the speeds.
    Is this time for the application of a variation offer old ‘mast abeam ‘ rule? Maybe mast at stern?
    Probably not, but in the heat of an event at 90k it might help with the visuals .
    Or Prehaps an overlap sensor?

  • @dadcooks1347
    @dadcooks1347 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you can’t handle a luff in any condition, don’t sail at that level.

  • @rustie4242
    @rustie4242 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    French did the same last event, running the Aussies off the course. But at these speeds they should try to win the race with skill rather than trying to damage other boats out of the race.

    • @AORD72
      @AORD72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The AU boat should have sailed lower to avoid being luffed. AU put themselves in that position. Tactically the kiwis sailed better. If the AU had been the leeward boat they would have done exactly the same thing

  • @craiglucas7782

    While legal this was a very dangerous play by NZ when the boats are at their absolute limits and the crazy thing is it was for 1 point 🤯 Handled well by Slingsby when asked about it, I bet they have words away from the cameras and microphones.

    • @FastForwardSailing
      @FastForwardSailing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. It was dangerous. Perhaps understandable but arguably safety has to come first. Not sure if that can get written into the rules somehow

      the referees are literally black flagging boats doing dangerous moves .. that has been stated publically. Looks like Burling is in the clear in every measure, Slingsby literally said in the pre press conference that every skipper (or driver) is ruthless and will use the rules to full advantage - and that he certainly would
