  • It's a slow process getting time to find find the right combination of antenna, mounting, power etc but I'm hoping to start making some contacts on HF mobile ham radio with my Land Rover set up.

    Carl,I really appreciate all the work you put in and the fact that you don't give up. Sometimes that is something I struggle with. Thanks so much.

    Success!!! Congrats Carl!! The mounting point was the issue…. Now you’re properly grounded.

    Well done Carl! You are an inspiration around the hobby and thank you for the informative - warts and all - videos which are grounded in the reality most of us experience. Best 73

    Tarheel on bumper!!!! Look at putting on the metal sheet on roof rack, as Ei2ijb did.

    Hi, nice video and good to see you experimenting and exploring options.
    Personally I always try and keep my install as simple as possible.
    The performance of that antenna will be more restricted having it mounted on the bumper.
    I would suggest having the antenna mounted as close to the roof profile so there are no obstructions. So you already have the roof bars on and you have a gutter lip mount which you could easily guarantee a good earth.
    I only use mono band antennas for hf as I find these more efficient but also it is easy to detect a fault as you will instantly see the change in swr.
    No tuner in line less loss.
    I made mounts where I earth my antenna directly to the roof bar fixing point and the earth is so good I can even do 160m.
    Anyways good luck and I hope we can work each other sometime MM5AJN/m.
    Let's try a sked sometime,
    Cheers
    Duncan

    If you don't intend to operate on HF whilst driving..??
    Then put the HF antenna on the roof rack, and make sure the rack is properly bonded via braid to the body of the vehicle
    Have you bonded via braid, all the doors to the body of the vehicle, improves HF by making sure entire vehicle acts as a ground plane

      Exactly....I have done that as 99% of my mobile operations are done while parked up.The copper braid for RF earth bonding is really important especially when operating Topband mobile.
      Great videos as always Carl..We all learn by trial and error.

      100%
      Earthing Earthing Earthing - Bare metal, wide, flat and complete - Antenna to body and body to chassis - Fully earthed.
      And get the antenna up high free of obstructions.

    Hi Carl, Thanks for another great video. Have you a video that shows what batteries you select to use when camping or on foot? Where they can be purchased from and also the chargers etc... essentially what you use to power the radio when not in a vehicle and are in an isolated spot. Thanks again..

    I feel your pain and I am just a simple SWL going mobile in my campervan, apart from almost everything in the van producing loads of rfi I.e led lamps and cheap tv, I just can’t get signals with either a Wellbrook loop or an active hf antenna. Plan is make it robust (poxy crap coax leads] and fully working at home than install it on the van. Not too sure if I need a good ground plane for receive only.

    Good on the landrover but really get your limit 400watts sorted if you want too use your limit that is also one big thing I think you need too speak up when you press your PTT No disrespect but you sound very quiet and on the radio in general stations want too hear you in the way of voice audio not soo much s-points on tx but R-quality - let’s be head 👍 de Mw6hnn

    This is a big part of what Amateur Radio is all about IMO, experimentation👍. You try a setup, it's rubbish so you move on and even when you hit on a configuration that works well you start to think it "could it be improved further"? Occasionally you try something that the textbooks say shouldn't work and it does! That's radio😀.

    Another great video👍👍👍👍 do you think the performance is better down on the bumper compared to being up higher on the vehicle???

    • @M0SZT
      @M0SZT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the moment it seems much better, the roof rack has a plastic ridge protecting the roof from being scratched this is probably acting as an insulator

    hi carl working progress. land rovers are not the best for grounding anyway you will always struggle i feel with them or earth the body to the chassis. i had a shogun and had a mount made that bolted to the spare wheel mount then came over the spare wheel on the back and earthed the body to the chassis and worked maybe try that glad your not giving up but trying different things good luck. 2e0 rju

    Great work Carl. What do you think to the battery box? Where did you get it from? Cheers Gary

    • @M0SZT
      @M0SZT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amazon, www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001PTHKMG/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_WZB6K39HCQ98QHZWM4NV
      I like it except the way the box fastens together, feels a bit weak when you lift it with a battery in.

      Sorry I mean the reference document when sitting the exam, it's a 16 page document including license schedule band plans etc and formula, or is it just the shorter 3 page (including formula sheet) see both are titled for use in the examination, Cheers.
