- There was very little food that day. The youngest fell on her back. The female took it with her beak and selected it.
She killed it, which is not easy for storks. It took a while.

If you pay real close attention, the baby she picks, falls over on its back with it's feet in the air before she grabs it the first time. Starts at 0:58 seconds.

Surprisingly enough, Lil' Storklets (whether considered too weak or small)
can take a lot of abuse before giving up the ghost! That almost tells me they are pretty strong. Hard to watch Liznm, but Black Storks are so fascinating not to watch!
What is that noise at the very end? Sounds almost like tree branches breaking or some type of equipment in the background.

If I may add. I love the large silvery branches that shoot out either way crookedly like it's been CGI'd from Batman Inc. It's just nature doing stuff that we'd have a floor's worth working on now.

I've seen so many videos of storks either killing their own chicks or killing the chicks of other neighboring stork nests, that I'm surprised that whole species has not gone extinct...
Most die because there is not enough food. That's all! Many years ago, there was enough food for birds!
The others are quiet like mommas in a baaad mood
It amazes me watching these videos that adult storks don't seem to know how to peck. They've go a sharp pointed beak that could much more quickly finish off the unfortunate chick, but instead they give it a slow death of 1000 cuts. I've seen some of the other siblings appear to copy their parents and attack the weakest chick, and they seemed to do something resembling a peck. But the adults just don't seem to do so, which seems strange to me as their beak would otherwise appear to be their most formidable weapon.
I think their point is to try and break their necks by how they twist themselves when they had the baby in their mouths. Since they had long necks, the whiplash will be big.
To bad they SUCK at it and end up making the baby suffering for several minutes.
there are plenty of videos of black storks impaling their storklets, with precise, devastating blows; especially in those cases in which the adult kills the entire brood.

@@eqsdhk I like to believe that this animal is giving its young a mercy killing. Maybe it sees that it’s weaker than the others so it kills it while it’s young as opposed to suffering a longer and more painful death.

As the smallest and showing weakness they were killed so there was more food for the others. In animals, mothers will kill the weak ones if there is a lack of food or if they are sick or weak. This is seen in all animals though more often in birds and rodents. Given the birds noticeable smaller size, it will continue staying small due to the other pushing it out of the way to get food. So other than wasting food on the one that will die anyways, the mother bird will kill it.

While I understand the cruelty of nature, I wish Mom did it in a quicker, more painless fashion, like eating it alive. Storks eat fish, frogs, snakes alive anyways.

Birds are reptilian in nature and while birds do care for their young, their reptilian instinct still holds some sway over them. It is not only storks but a lot of other bird species also end up committing such horrendous acts. They go by instinct of weeding out the weaklings rather than maternal compassion.

Might be, but when the parents aren't smart enough to bring back enough food so everybody gets feed thats pretty bad. And once the other chics eat and one doesn't that makes the one that doesn't weak and it has a hard time eating after that on account the other chics beat it to the dinner table after that. Sad deal. But still we don't need that type of influence to be spread to any other beings. If its alive and breathing, its a being

When it's trying to kill only one it seems to try to crush either the head or neck of the hatchling.
When it appears to be eating it, it is likely crushing the storklet's organs.

I know why do they do that? Also, why are they doing it PERIOD? They’re worried about their chick MAYBE starving, and then ultimately dying, so the solution... kill it? I mean I understand the risk of food being ‘wasted’ on it, food that could have went to the other storklets, but what makes more sense to me is that if it did happen to starve to death, then the rest could eat it. But I know that they know what they’re doing farrrrr more than I ever could as just a human observer, and also I know it’s silly to judge them. Personally though I don’t think I could watch them anymore. I didn’t watch this video, just came to read the descriptions and comments etc
You would think, with that long pointed beak, they could just make one good stab with it and end it all more quickly. Always awful to see, even though that is how nature works.
It looks like they don't toss chicks over in a forest in order not to attract predators. White storks, which live in villages, toss theirs over.
@@CenturianEagle they want the body to feed the other chicks. The reason this is being done is a food shortage, why would you throw away a food source. I know, it seems ghoulish, but it all serves the overall goal -- get some of them fledged soon enough that we can all be ready to boogie south when the time comes.

I don't think so, it was by far the smallest of the chicks and it fell on its back right before she selected it so I'd say it just stuck out as the weakest and not worth investing effort in, sadly.

Crushing the neck is usually the method. Some throw them off the nest and fall on the ground

This bird species descend to the water's edge in search of food and remain vulnerable. Many offspring mean more food and their own risk of death. When they die, it also means the death of their offspring. They may be sacrificing, but this is very sad for us humans. But we must remember that we don't have enemies who want to eat us, so we may have difficulty understanding them.

A lot of animals kill their young during hard years, dogs are a good example of another animal who will kill their young. They mostly do it through starvation and exposure instead of directly biting it outside of when they drive/carry it away from the other pups.

I get choosing and killing the weakest one to feed and increase the chance of survival for the rest. I don't get the mother stork killing the chick and then brooding it after. So macabre and bizarre.

Аист это глупая и жестокая птица, она не хочет делиться с пищей, после она и еще убьет, они даже взрослых птенцов убивают, их действия не предсказуемы, а особенно черный аист, такова природа, не люблю этих птиц, а птенцов люблю...
В 9 из 10 птенцов убивает самец, это так между прочим и он же меньше кормит птенцов, лодырь одним словом, как и большинство самцов в природе.

Странная птица, такое ощущение что второй родитель погиб, или бросил гнездо, если все происходит по сценарию детского страшного стишка про «десять негритят», когда со временем число «черненьких» в гнезде становится на один меньше. Лес на фоне гнезда не похож на пустынное место, голоса птиц и лягушек в флёровом шуме не похожи на звуки с отсутствием добычи, только вот это не меняет положения птицы на гнезде, если она выкармливает одних за счёт других. Второй особи в виде отца-кормильца явно бы имело смысл подтаскивать еды к гнезду больше и чаще, тогда бы привычки поедания своих внутри гнезда можно было не формировать с самого детства и этим увеличить численность своей популяции, а значит дать возможности для дальнейшего сохранения вида, болот и лягушек на аистов бы хватило вполне и в достатке, выжили бы, они же перелетные.

Maybe it’s time to learn about nature.
It's probably choosing the fittest knowing 4 large chicks take some feeding & out they go. Eagles do it too by laying two eggs, one a spare. As first egg hatches it then allows both birds to grow. Once the first chick is strong enough then she kicks the second one out depending on a lean or fallow year.

Para que tienen los hijos y después matan a los más pequeños ? Si es por comida, que se muevan y lleven más comida al nido en vez de matarlos. Me indigna!!! Si saben que esto va a suceder porque los que ponen las cámaras y vigilan el nido no quitan a los pichones que saben que los van a matar y se lo llevan y los crian en otro lugar!!!.
No mata a los más pequeños porque sí. Mata a los débiles porque no tendrán oportunidad de sobrevivir. Se llama selección natural. Los animales no funcionan como las personas. No puedes pedirle a una cigüeña que recoge aún más comida sólo porque a usted le duele como funciona una especie a la que no pertenece.
Apoyo su opinión
El ser humano no es igual a la naturaleza animal, pero por algo ayudamos o aportamos algo a la naturaleza y sabemos q hay especies de aves q matan a sus crías. Y es por eso que debemos ayudar a los polluelos débiles, para que en un futuro no extinga las aves, yaque las Águilas, buho, gavilanes, alcones, lechuzas y otras aves que se alimenta de los demás polluelos no acaben con los demás.
Por eso considero q si hay q ayudar al más débil para q no tenga un triste final y peor de sus padres, La naturaleza es la naturaleza y nadie puede contra ella, pero si podemos aportar en algo más no sólo cortando y exterminado los cuadrúpedos por gusto, por sus pieles o comida.
Tenemos que reponer la naturaleza y así ella nos seguirá dando de sus frutos.
Existe algo llamado ley de la naturaleza, algunos sois incapaces de entender como funciona, la intervención humana en algunos casos haría mas mal que bien.

Then why did you still force yourself to watch it? Also dont put your humanize way of thinking into a wild animal. It doesnt work like that.
They wouldn't know to cull the clutch until they went around to find food for the chicks, up to that point the pair only had to feed themselves. Besides, you never know what eggs will or won't hatch and if the chicks that hatch will be healthy.

可惜我看不懂英文，这只鸟为什么会杀死自已的孩子。
因为环境受人为影响，缺乏食物，母鸟为了确保孩子们的生存率，把最小的孩子给牺牲了。
