  • Bas has some crazy personality traits, like being impulsive, looking for sensation, Type A personality, ADD, etc, and all those can lead people to addiction, thankfully came out on top.
Over the years many people have asked Bas to talk about it and how he personally overcame it, so he made an episode about it.
Remember, this worked for Bas, he is not saying it will work for you but he truly believe it will help you for sure.
Like the video says in the opening, Bas is NOT a doctor, so please, consult a one before you stop any addiction
    Godspeed, stay healthy!
If you would like to support the really great organization "Fighters Against Cancer" (T-shirt Bas is wearing) please go here: www.fightersag...

As a professional fighter, one of his favorite tactics was the liver shot (both punch and kick), and he popularized its use in MMA. Bas is known for his charisma and has capitalized on his celebrity status since retiring from fighting in 1999. He works as a color commentator in the MMA orginazation. He has appeared in numerous tv shows, movies, and video games. He also coaches MMA and has authored several instructional materials.

Bas! I needed this video. I have been an alcoholic and hooked on kratom and nicotine for some time now and it is all I can do to get out of bed and start the day. I am also a bouncer and had my shoulder dislocated when I was jumped by some guys at the bar. It has ruined my drive to train and made me hopeless, making me even more dependent on this crap to just feel any sense of positivity. I also just beat a DUI case miraculously. Man, hearing this from such a legend as yourself is very reassuring. Blessings and much thanks!

      @OfficialBasRutten  ปีที่แล้ว +69

Brother, I had the same, the only way you can stop Kratom with almost no problems is when you stop drinking. Because you know as well as I do, when you drink, the Kratom works better, so you need to stop drinking. That way you can start going down with the Kratom, get those kitchen measurement "spoons". (If you take the powder and not pills) so you know exactly what amount you take every single time. You have a full tea spoon, half, one 4th and 1/8. And then start going down slowly. If you take 1.5 teaspoon per time, just go to 1, you will be amazed, almost no difference and actually your pain will be going away as well (because it doesn't work for your pain anymore right, just a little) well, less will make it better for the pain, I just told this 5 in ago to a friend who takes it for gout. From one every week take 1/8 less. This means in a few months you are getting very close to stopping. ut, when you drink and enhance the feeling, you will go up in volume again. So try to stop drinking! Godspeed

I was getting addicted to kratom too, the first couple days off it sucked, but now I can use it rarely when I actually need it. Drinking for me took way longer

Hey man, just checking on you. The Bas himself responded to you with his incredible and honest advice/experience, that's gotta be a bit of an inspiration to help you in the right direction. It did with me and pain medication. I didn't abuse it, nor do I drink, but I have been on it so long it didn't seem to do anything. I'd have to keep going Up and Up and UP. It's been a month since I took this advice, but I'm on 3/4 of the dose I was on. It's not 1/4, or 0, but it's a step in the right direction. The more you resist that urge to say "it hurts but.. well, a little more would help more!" The easier it is not to fall into it.
You can do it man. We're all "Rutten" for you.

20:00 Precipitated withdrawal from suboxone is the definition of pain. I had the same experience but I injected the suboxone which made it 10x worse. Bas is right. I had goosebumps on my face!!! Bas may not be inspiration for everyone, but for me he is INSPIRATION. I heard him talking about cold showers for 90 days. It got in to my head. Later on I watched some podcasts with professionals, talking about the beneficial effects of these showers and I said to myself, why not? I tried it and…I hate it, but I do it every day, no matter how exhausted or cold I feel: cold shower. Half way into it, it feels normal, after it, feels great. I hate it, but I do it, because only pusies (?) give up.
I train 5 times a week with heavy weights (for my puny bodyweight). I have a headache? I train. My bowels don’t feel good? I train. Had little sleep? I train. I hate it at that time, I struggle big time, but it feels great afterwards.
I started intermittent fasting and eat mostly the same thing everyday, no snacks, no sugars. Sometimes I crave, but the feeling of rejection feels great. I was stronger again, than the craving 5 year old in me.
In “tough” times I ask myself: what would Bas or my ex-IFBB competitor girlfriend do? They would storm through these times and be stronger than ever. So I have to do the same. Thank you Bas for this and all the other videos! God speed!🙂

It will never go well and get better, ever. Unless you stop, otherwise everything will slowly but surely go down and down , best thing is to stop. Especially if you have a family. What happens if you can't get (whatever you take) anymore, how are you going to be there for your family? I always think "worst case scenario", and that is "what if you can't get it anymore?" Every addiction is an illusion, we are looking for fake happiness, we are confusing pleasure with happiness. Pleasure will never stop, you always need more, so might as well stop now! Godspeed and good luck with that!

You are an amazing storyteller and a positive example to all. I personally believe that in case of need people gotta go to see a psichologist, but not all people can afford that kind of treatment and not every state guarantees free healthcare and mental care. Sadly, lot of alchoolics believe that drinking means "man up", or bein violent, or got a bad attitude. We need more positive challenges and you are bringing a lot of good habits in this video. I work with publishers specialized in mental health, and you just summarised some very important topic in just one video. Amazing.

Im studying pharmaceutical technologies in Germany. The reason why we get addicted to opioids, our body produces new opioid-receptors. So we need to increase the agent for the same impact. I dont understand, why we reduce the amount of agent gradually. There is no dosage in trade to do it properly. In these days we can use technology like algorithms to decrease properly. Its a shame ...

Thank you Bas, I ended up on oxycodone, then methadone after that virtually exactly the same way you did, through training injuries and a couple of car accidents etc, and pills became a problem for me the same way too,
I wasn’t abusing them, I just had an irresponsible doctor, and was very naïve to what i was getting into, and before you know it you can’t do anything or go anywhere without them.
I was also physically addicted to Xanax at the same time, so I had a constant risk of seizure without them, and suffered about 20-30 before I successfully detoxed from them.
I’m still not completely free of methadone or benzos, but at a fraction of the dose I started on and dropping all the time,
I even had exactly the same testosterone problem as you, but in Australia I had no doctor willing to fix the problem they caused, and I have to self administer unfortunately, but as you know when your testosterone is through the floor things become impossible,
I never knew one of my favourite fighters had such a similar story, thanks heaps for the story and honesty Bas and the inspiration to keep pushing forward.

    Hey Bas,
Similar thing happened to me regarding your "demon/spirit experience" but I was single and in my late teens or early 20's..
It must have been between 4 and 5 AM. Sorta think I might have had to go to the bathroom. I guess it was cool and my shoulders weren't covered.
I didn't want to get up but then I thought I thought I might as well.
But when I go to get up I notice this presence sitting on the side of the bed and seemed to inspecting my wrist. (I'm thinking WTF, right?!)
I go to pull my hand away and it seemed to look at me but the face was not discernible - almost like a dark metal gauze or screening with a vague resemblance to a face but again no real discernible features. So as I go to pull my hand toward me this presence caused me to hear a sound, almost like the camera click from as old-style very quiet German-made 35mm film camera. ZZzzzzick! After which I was totally paralyzed! All I could do was think!! I tried a few more times, but each time it annoyedly zapped (Zzzzck-ed!) me back into complete paralysis mode and continued with its inspection of, or whatever the eff it was doing to my wrist!
So I am thinking to myself, how can I outsmart this thing, I mean I am physically paralyzed. So I make like I'm all done mentally fighting this thing and think thoughts of non-resistance - like I'm going with the flow now. I'm gonna be a good boy and play nice. But really the only thing that seemed to me that would get through was to suddenly say something that before he could "Zick" me again and he would understand. I thought maybe this entity doesn't come from here, but he might recognize the Creator. So I gathered up all the mental strength and I suppose spiritual strength (although I don't think it was a very spiritual part of my life) I could muster and blasted out "GOD Wouldn't Approve!" Actually, I think I only got the word GOD out (I use all caps just so you and anyone else knows I'm talking about GOD the Father, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Yeah. That GOD!) Anyhow I wake up and my heart is racing and my eyes are bugging out. And guess what? It was GAWN! Yeah, it coulda been a dream/nighmare, but for years I carried around a little red spider vein under my inner wrist skin, just at the base of my right palm before it meets the wrist. Must have been able to notice it for a good 20 years after. It is no longer noticeable now. But I'm getting old and brittle at 66! Much easier to bruise, don't heal as fast, and don't quite bounce as well as I used to. But all the components are still functional and I that GOD every day for that!

I got the addiction gene, that's for sure. Been addicted to so many things, from the obvious (Cannabis, cigarettes, Gambling) to the most ridiculous stuff (coughing medicine and even those Anta flu "coughing" candy. Well, I quit all that shit! I even stopped smoking a week ago today, after smoking for over 25 yrs now. How, well i was so sick of it every day, it got expensive (10 euros a package) and i told myself I would just finish the remaining 2 packs of cigarettes and smoke the last cigarette last Sunday before going to sleep! And, well that's just what I did! And I rather drop dead now than start with that crap ever again. Will power is what it is, just do it, as you said Bas. But I do recognize myself in a lot of the things you said, especially about if it do something it's always to the extremes! It's with everything, every day I have to keep my thought process in check or it goes out of control. anyways, great speech and yup it's just like you say with addictions! but with some addictions, you need to visit a doctor first, like heavy alcohol, hard drugs, etc otherwise it can be dangerous. But just quit, start now, and do it. if I can, if Bas can, everyone can. Peace and groetjes (ja ik ben gewoon NL's :D)

Bedankt voor het zo openhartig en recht door zee delen van je boodschap. Een verslaving kan iedereen overkomen , maar ook iedereen kan er zelf weer vanaf komen. Precies wat je zegt: Wilskracht! Inspirerend verhaal.

Bas is the truth. I am battling a kratom addiction, I use for pain. The alternative is prescribed opiates. I am in a hard place because I have fallen very sick and I am down playing it because I don’t want to scare my 4 girls and wife.

Chronic cellular level dehydration links to substance abuse... Including getting pains and traumas that just wont heal. Fascial work is good guys, fighters and non fighters. I as kayaker had a nasty shoulder injury couple of years ago that didnt show a smallest sign of healing.. Every time I trained harder or had storm session it came back... but fascial work and hydration... a few months and things are changing. Im having great time in rough conditions now, and pains are less and less.

Re: the area you described your chronic injury, it's the brachialis muscle. I think it has to do with all those hammer curls you used to do back in the day, you went too heavy. When you combined that with all the heavy bag work you did, it over taxed the connective tissues and the healing process couldn't keep up with the volume of training you did. I have friends who used to train/teach at BHJJC, and they all said nobody trained as hard as you did, bag work all day every day.

Great Video Bas, I think addiction is more prevalent in guys, first because we have this huge amount of energy to control, which derives from testosterone, then sometimes its a lack of role model in your life I suppose that make you choose wrong stuff.

Although I agree that in most cases lifestyle changes are the answer, it is a huge oversimplification that everybody can bounce back from drug abuse or health issues the way that you did. Most people can I agree with you there, but for some people there can be permanent damage done from either sleeping pills, drug abuse of a bad lifestyle.

i wanna do something else with my life man. i work in IT, 1 year ago i gave up my smartphone - big difference. i really want to kind of go off grid, i feel like internet is ruining my life - i manage to be productive and disciplined but eventually always to sucked back into youtube binges, etc. i think its also why many religions have morning prayers for discipline.

    Bas, here's the clear gospel.
Jesus is Lord God Almighty clothed in unsinful humanity and He is the author of (eternal life) to all who trust Him *alone* for salvation.
This means that saving repentance is realizing that you are a sinner deserving of God's just punishment in Hell and turn (repent) from whatever you trusted in before, if indeed you trusted in anything; to trusting in the person and finished work of Christ (alone) for salvation.
FYI, you are doing great work here.
