  • In 1994, the Santa Clara Valley Historical Association interviewed Steve Jobs. What he said during this unscripted film interview is remarkable. In this footage, Steve talks about his values, advice to entrepreneurs and his thoughts on how to best live life. This is a segment from the full unscripted interview.
    Steve Jobs 1994 Interview
    Interview date: November 11, 1994
Interviewer: John McLaughlin, Historian and President of the Santa Clara Valley Historical Association
    Interviewer's question:
"If this was going to be viewed forever by young high school kids and college kids - young entrepreneurs who want to go out and do something while they're still young. You know, the advantages of doing that. It opened up a whole new gate for other young entrepreneurs. What advice would you give them?"
    Transcript:
". . . The thing I would say is, when you grow up, you tend to get told that the world is the way it is, and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family life, have fun, save a little money. But life, that's a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact, and that is: Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it. You can influence it. You can build your own things that other people can use. And the minute that you understand that you can poke life, and actually something will, you know, if you push in, something will pop out the other side, that you can change it. You can mold it. That's maybe the most important thing is to shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you're just going to live in it, versus embrace it. Change it. Improve it. Make your mark upon it. I think that's very important. And however you learn that, once you learn it, you'll want to change life and make it better. Because it's kind of messed up in a lot of ways. Once you learn that, you'll never be the same again."

Because what else is there, really, if you don't want to make your mark on the world. It's really getting boring to just be a spectator and just die that way. To do this, i think it's really important to keep reminding yourself that you're going to die someday, and that should encourage you to take the biggest chances ever, not depress you in any way.

      ‏Dear recipient,
‏I invite you to read this message because it is very, very important.
‏We kindly request that you take a few moments of your time to read this letter because it is possible that this letter will open up a new dimension of your role a human being in this universe. We hope that you are a free, broad-minded person free from prejudice whose goal is to find the truth. Before we continue, let us declare to you the purpose of this letter - that it is an introduction and invitation to the lifestyle known as Islam.
      ‏SOME FACTS
‏Islam has approximately 1 billion followers known as Muslims who follow the final revelation to mankind, known as the "Qur'an", revealed to Prophet Muhammad about 1400 years ago. Contrary to the common misconception, only about 20% of all Muslims are Arabs, the rest are Indians, Indonesians, Bosnians,Africans,Chinese, turkish and so on
      .
      ‏WHAT IS ISLAM
‏Islam, unlike most other religions, is not named after any man. Instead Islam means the submission of one's will to the only true god worthy of worship "Allah" and anyone who does so is termed a "Muslim". The word also implies "peace" which is the natural consequence of total submission to the will of Allah. Islam is the religion that was given to Adam, the first man and the first prophet of Allah, and it was the religion of all the prophets sent by Allah to mankind like Jesus and Moses
      .
      ‏THE MESSAGE OF ISLAM
‏The most important message of Islam is the absolute Unity of God-that there is only One Supreme Being who has no partners and is not dependent on anyone or anything. He is the creator of everything and the whole universe is under His control. Since the total submission of one's will to Allah represents the essence of worship, Islam is the worship of Allah alone and the avoidance of worship directed to any person, place or thing other than Allah. In essence, Islam calls man away from the worship of creation and invites him to worship only its Creator. Allah is the only one deserving man's worship as it is only by His will that prayers are answered. Hence prayers to the non-living such as the sun, fire, and to humans whether they be Jesus, Moses or even Muhammad are rejected, as Allah informs us in the opening chapter of the Qur'an, known as Soorah Al-Faatihah, verse 4:
‏"You alone do we worship and from you alone do we seek help."
‏A Muslim believes that Allah and His creation are distinctly different
‏entities. Neither is Allah His creation or a part of it, nor is His creation Him or a part of Him. Ultimately, it is the belief that the essence of Allah is everywhere in His creation or that His divine being is or was present in some aspects of His creation, which has provided justification for the worship of creation. Islam, hence, is a clear call to the worship of the Creator and the rejection of creation-worship in any form.
      ‏THE MIRACLE OF QUR'AN
‏"And if you are in doubt as to what We [Allah] have revealed…then produce a Soorah (chapter) like thereunto"(Soorah Baqarah 2:23)
‏This was the challenge put forth by Allah in the Qur'an 1400 years ago. As of yet, none has or will ever come close to meeting this challenge. Hence, as a result, multitudes throughout the centuries have believed and continue to believe in the Qur'an as a revelation beyond any human capacity. Modern scientists, for instance, have been amazed by the accuracy of scientific information presented in the Qur'an. Here are just a few examples:
‏In his book of embryology-'The Developing Human' [W.B. Saunders Publishing, 1982], Dr. Keith Moore added a whole chapter to discuss the scientific accuracy of the Quranic discussion of this science. Another eminent scientist, Dr. Maurice Bucaille wrote in his book-'The Bible, the Qur'an and Science':
‏"I could not find a single error in the Qur'an…if a man was the author of the Qur'an how could he have written facts in the 7th century A.D. that today are shown to be in keeping with modern scientific knowledge"
‏Facts about astronomy, the animal world and other natural phenomenon, that were alien to modern science not long ago, are scattered among the messages of Allah's Unity and His Attributes throughout the miracle that is known as al-Qur'an
      .
‏WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER RELIGIONS
‏There are so many sects, cults, religions, philosophies, and movements in the world, all of which claim to be the right way or the only true path to Allah. How can one determine which one is correct or if, in fact, all are correct? The method by which the answer can be found is to clear away the superficial differences in the teachings of the various religions, and identify the central object of worship to which they call, directly or indirectly. False religions all have in common one basic concept concerning Allah: they either claim that all human beings are gods or that specific individuals were Allah or that nature is Allah or that Allah is a figment of man's imagination. For example, Prophet Jesus invited his followers to worship Allah but those who claim to be his followers today call people to worship Jesus, claiming that he was Allah while Jesus himself would deny this as Allah says in the Qur'an:
‏"And behold Allah will say: "O Jesus the son of Mary Did you say to men, Worship me and my mother as gods besides Allah; He [Jesus] will say-"Glory to You I could never say what I had no right (to say')" (Soorah Al-Maa'idah- 5:116)
‏Even though false religions might teach some good things, they all, however, teach the greatest evil- the worship of creation. Creation-worship is the greatest sin that man can commit because it contradicts the very purpose of his creation, which is the worship of Allah as explained in the following verses:
‏"Verily Allah will not forgive the joining of partners with Him, but He may forgive (sins) less than that for whom so ever He wishes" (Soorah An- Nisaa 4:48 and 116)
‏"I have only created Jinns and men, that they may worship me" (Soorah Zaareeyaat 51:56)
Why do I have to be muslim ?
‏Since the consequences of false religion are so grave, the true religion of Allah must be universally understandable and attainable, not confined to any people, place or time. Within the central principle of Islam and in its definition, lies the roots of lslam's universality. Whenever man comes to the realization that Allah is one and distinct from His creation, and submits himself to Allah, he becomes a Muslim and is eligible for paradise. This is the essence and the corner-stone of Islam:
‏"Laa Elaaha lllallaah" (There is no god worthy of worship except Allah)
‏Its repetition and the sincere belief in it automatically brings one within the fold of Islam and guarantees one Paradise. Thus, the final prophet of Islam is reported to have said, "Any one who says: there is no god but Allah and dies holding that (belief) will enter paradise." (Reported by Abu Dharr and collected by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim

Oh "brother"... I came here to mock that pompous clown, thinking he'd be spitting some boilerplate Chinese fortune cookie wisdom, but this 70 seconds video actually gleans an INSANE view into Jobs' psyche. Case in point:
"Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you! The minute you understand that, you can poke life and it actually would pop up!".
No Mr. Jobs.... There were MANY MANY MANY people smarter than you! People with PhD.s - people who ACTUALLY designed the architecture of your products and implemented them - not at the abstract level while standing in front of a white-board holding a pretentious fruit like a pear, but by STUDYING for decades, AND APPLYING physics, material science, hardware and software engineering. People who didn't make pretty little PowerPoint presentations about how we can effectively manipulate the public into buying our overpriced products, but rather sat in front of their work stations 12 hours a day, slaving away for years, CREATING THE ACTUAL PRODUCT you became a billionaire from!
That this doucehbag says "you can poke life" is the PERFECT way to understand his neanderthal managerial style: "I AM THE BIG BOSS, I will stand on your throat until you spit out the next golden egg... Now work slave while I take all the credit and equity from your hard labor muahahahahaha!".
This guy is the manifestation of modern evil, no two ways about it! From the needless environmental damage he inflicted on this planet, creating products that weren't backward compatible, to his closed-garden system that stifled innovation, to the simplistic, intuitive, and inefficient UX he constantly championed (like the galactically stupid Skeuomorphism lol). No longer can we easily identify evil by its red wings, hooves, and pointy tail. No sir, evil today dons pseudo-intellectual John Lennon glasses while pretending he's the coming of Christ.... Living 'la vida loca' while a sweatshop of engineers and factory workers are locked in his basement!
This guy and the insane cult following he still has around him, are proof the general public is a critical mass of mouth-breathers!

Steve Jobs was one of the most influential people the world has ever known. We can all learn from him we don't have to just accept the world for what it is. Everything in this world was created by people no smarter than you and when you realize that you too can experiment and create ideas or things for other people to use. Also remember you cannot connect the dots looking forward you can only connect the dots looking backwards so you have to have belief in faith, the universe, fate, destiny, whatever it is you have to believe that it's going to work out for you in whatever you pursue.

What he was trying to describe is the fact that man is the creator of his reality. And the possibilities of how this reality could look are limitless, as limitless as the universe, because through man the universe becomes aware of its own beauty and power.
What good is a beautiful flower if I can't enjoy its fragrance?
What good is a rainbow if there is no one whose imagination it can inspire?
What good are sunbeams reflected on the ocean if there is no one to watch this light show with their mouth open?
What good is dance and music if there is no one to enjoy the movement and the sounds?
You don't need all that to survive.
There will be a new era in which the human being will realise this - he IS the universe, he is not an individual separate from other human beings and things.
and being on earth is only about one thing:
    The joy of being.

Jobs says about not be passive. You need to live truly your life, doing different things always thinking about how to change the world, your life. It's a class of trust. Believe in yourself will make your life better. If you want to open a new company, do it. Life is broader than just a loop of "work - home - work". Change your life friends.

It's called agency, I realized I had it and noticed most others lacked it in early childhood. I wish all people had it except people who are forever unable to experience genuine concern for others in our community who instead demonstrate moral disengagement when faced with basic moral choices. Albert Bandura stated that "people's beliefs about their abilities have a profound effect on those abilities". I have to tell people who lack agency like all the time not to use their influence on others who also lacks agency to actively make their negative beliefs come true because they don't know that their own actions impact outcomes, thus acting against their own and public interest!

I've always brushed off Jobs as being just a good marketing guy with a bad temper. I didn't give it much thought especially because the average's person's arrogance for owning Apple products always turned me off. But hearing this man speak, especially in his earlier days really made him feel relateable, especially in this stage of my life as I feel I'm unveiling these things. I'm beginning to love the man.

I was working in a company that had no perspective of this, and they made choices that were completely disassociated from themselves, which never created positive effects. When i questioned this and pretty much said it was madness to push an idea that they dont believe in i was called disloyal. I quit shortly thereafter. Never waste your life in a place you dislike, unless you gain something of greater value that you have a specific interest in.

Haha lookup the Abilene paradox! Also the thing Steve talks about is called agency and most people never realize they have it. Also lookup moral disengagement for good measure it might make you realize some more things if you haven't had it all figured out yet! People tend to try to gaslight you instead of facing reality and own up to their mistakes when they feel exposed, most people today have come to expect from each other to be treated like children.

Wow, so simple. So profound. So true. Sometimes I stand so close to the forest I can't see the trees. I think the happiest people are those that love what they do for a living never work a day in their life. And with that comes financial success. Look around at the folks that are the happiest and notice how they view their career. Chances are they are rich with happiness and often are the best at what they do. Not necessarily the wealthiest but often they are but the point I make is they're b
