Making a Beat on a VHS Tape?...

  • Today I attempt to making a beat using "the poor man's reel to reel" also commonly known as a VHS player. Unbeknownst to many, these bad boys can actually be used to record audio, so let's see how it turns out. I hope you all enjoy :)

    Really fun video. I especially enjoyed your editing revealing the process of shopping and recording. One thing I remember about working with VCRs, is that not only is there a dofference between player/recorders (some have hifi components for audio, and some companies skimped in that area), but the TAPE you use to record on can make a huge difference: the make/brand, number of times it was played, whether it's been recorded on before, and recording speed you choose (SLP is going to be way better). All of that said, glad I found your channel!

    We would run like four drum mics through a four track mixer onto tape and then you can get a less tin..eee…. Then you can play it back and dub your guitar or vox etc over onto vhs. Man this reminds me of the good old days back when local emo bands ran the scene and all we did was play house shows and love life! Back when the dollar menu was actually a fucking dollar. Fuck I’m old now.

    You should have told in the video that to get good quality audio (even better than a reel to reel), it has to be a hifi audio vhs player. Normal VHS has terrible sound quality. Also, if the highs r distorted, there must be a problem with the equipment or u recorded too loud and exceeded the 0 dB limit. I had a hifi VHS and it recorded perfect sound, no distortion whatsoever, unless u set the input signal level too high.

  • @elnyoutube123

    I think if you eq'd out the high end and added bass it would sound really cool. It'll still have that real tape sound but with modern mixing.

      I actually saw a video the other day about this cool video technique where you run a camcorder into an old tv and basically record itself, and it looks crazy as hell. I wanna try to get more into weird experimental stuff like that

  • @njm1971nyc

    That's quite strange...VHS Hi-Fi audio is, normally, pretty much indistinguishable from source. I've NEVER known it to change the EQ in that kind of way. Something seems wrong with your VHS recorder. Bad capacitors are a possibility. Something definitely ain't right!

    • @njm1971nyc

      For context, I've been working professionally with (amongst other things!) HiFi VHS machines since 1989. Only once had an issue with the hifi circuitry in a VHS deck...bad caps...but the audio was just low, not bright and toppy. Good quality machines won't do that, when working correctly.

    • @njm1971nyc

      PS. If recording from an external source, you really need a VHS deck with audio level meters (and manual audio level controls). Cheap/later models did away with such "luxuries".

  • @WeSuckAsHumans

    Im surprised that was too hi fi. My 50’s reel to reel on scotch 111 tape adds highs to but yeah, you gotta run instruments thru separately so you can mix later and it is time consuming BUT i love the way it sounds. It tames the transients and makes everything mix easier.
    Your beat is sweet. Sounded good as is

    Try using a SVHS machine instead, it will sound better

    • @ManoelNunesOSan

      It's not a matter of being SVHS, if it's hifi VHS, the sound will be the same. But the distortion in the highs he describes is not normal. Hifi VHS records sound almost perfectly. I had one and the sound was CD like. I believe he set the input level too high or there was a problem with this unit.

    Whatever VCR you’re using is no good, get a better one. VHS should at least sound exactly the same or better.
