Awesome tip will definitely do that! Can't wait to practice all these techniques once I get all my supplies! I'll be coming back to re watch all your videos!
Thanks for this videos. Brilliant idea of practicing on gessoed cardboard. To pick up the technique without using up my oil paints I did start off using very inexpensive gouache. Did not mind the colours I was using as I wanted to get holding the brush and applying the paint correctly. I now have numerous pieces of cardboard with rainbow coloured happy trees. Also done some 'proper' oil painting trees that are super happy...so is the painter. Thanks again for an excellent video...off to try some mountains or clouds.
I am stoked to hear that you are improving with your tree technique - Also, glad to hear that my tips and tricks are working. Always nice to hear good feedback ya know 😝
@ritashappypenci lFound this yesterday, 3 years after you. I've asked lots of artists to show me how to paint trees with no luck. This video has got me practising tho will take me lots more than x 10, using up my acrylic paints on my way to trying oils. BTW noticed & love yr username.
This is what I was looking for! Thanks bud. I like doing detail branches, my old prob was gesso or paint was to thick. Never could make the actual tree look nice and pines are a nightmare for me. This will help me thanks again.
Glad I could help! I plan on doing a follow up to this video and I also want to do a winter tree video in December. So hit the Sub button to know when those go live.
Awesome - Watch it like 5 more times ha ha ha - I need the ad rev ha ha ha. I do have one more video on trees you might like - feel free to check it out: th-cam.com/video/6AV4ZKCD2mU/w-d-xo.html
Great video. I don't have as much trouble with pine trees as I do with regular trees and bushes. How can I get the spotted individual leaves look instead of a blotchy blob. Could you do a video on tress other pine trees and bushes techniques?
I will be more than happy to add that idea to my list of videos. Until then, a simple trick you can do is when you put highlights on. Make a very marbled mixture. This way when you tap on highlights it will have multiple colors in it. This will give the illusion of multiple leaves
Hey man! Thanks for another awesome video! Was wondering if you ever considered doing a video on branches using the liner brush? I tend to struggle with these more detailed trees very much as a beginner and would love to hear some of your tips! Thanks again!
You mentioned practicing. BEFORE one starts painting & buying a bunch of supplies, would you recommend practicing strokes, brush handling, shading, etc with craft paint or even a cheap water color set, just to get used to painting & various techniques involved?
Hmmmm - good question. There is a saying that goes Buy It Nice OR Buy It Twice. While many many cheap supplies will work great, I recommend you get supplies that will help you grow and be successful at the beginning. AND YES, that means paying a little bit more. I rather have you spend a little more, build confidence and have things click than struggle with crappy supplies.... If that makes sense.
Ha ha ha been there. I am still there at times. Trees are always tough cause you have this vision in your head. Just take a spare canvas and just practice row after row of trees and things will start to click.
Can we use a carton surface to practice all kind of features? Clouds, mountains etc? And can we use white to put snow on branches instead of the light green?
Yes you can but you will have to gesso your surface first so you paint will stick correctly. You can put what ever color you want on the tree for highlights - Go nuts and have fun!
I should have been painting on cardboard first! I think I'll prep some cardboard with gesso and start practicing various basics and test new things to help build some confidence before spending more money on canvas pads!
I have tried so hard maybe too hard. I still have trouble with trees. I go slow and fast, I try different ways that I have seen. Any more tips you can give or maybe a video for dummies like me.
No joke - Trees are really really hard! So I feel ya here. I plan on making an updated series to trees SO stay tuned for that - I just have to find time to do it :)
Hi, thanks for the video and the tips, but i am struggling doing brunches and trunks for other types of trees, i am using linear brush, and i am taking thinner with brown color and no matter what i do the color doesnt come of from the brush. I tried to thin it like water and nothing!!! Did you have the same problem?
@@WildCreates thanks, i realy appriciate it. i have the same problem doing the foam in the waves with the linear brush. Its crazy but i'v tried everything.
I struggle with the fan brush, and think mine are just not good brushes? They tend to separate into four or five clumps of brush instead of staying in the fan shape. Am I doing something wrong?
Have you cleaned and conditioned your brushes at all? IF you have, next time .... Use a lot more paint, Then try dipping your fan brush in paint thinner and dab it dry. Then when you take you paint brush through your paint, wiggle the brush back-and-forth (on both sides). This will help move the paint to the ends of the bristles holding the fan shape more.
I am not sure about your area. Click on this link and see if one populates in your region: geni.us/BobRossPaletteKnife If not you can always try making your own: th-cam.com/video/isGFzm2x-3M/w-d-xo.html
Try this: - Use a soap/conditioner to soft and clean the bristles - When Painting, turn and dip your elbow and wrist a little. This will make you paint more with the corner of the brush. - Load a lot of paint into the brush. Hope that helps a little :)
Not sure if you saw this video yet. But this will help you cheat and get highlights to stick. Check It out Rob: th-cam.com/video/3F8rO6Z35T4/w-d-xo.html
I'm so glad it's not just me who sucks at trees 😆 they are HARD! This video was super helpful
Dude legit.
Trees can suck it ha ha ha - They are super hard.

Thanks for this wonderful video, very helpful for my trees!!
He he he - Glad I can help you tackle trees :)
Painting pine trees is easy with the Bob Ross technique. The fan brush and how you hold it when applying the paint is the key....
100% - When you understand it, you can make a ton of awesome trees easily :)

To be honest I struggle with them too - They always look like weird pitch-forks ha ha h
But I will see what I can do for you in a future video

I’ve ruined so many otherwise good paintings with shitty trees. Will definitely practice this!

Thanks for the kind words...
I enjoy giving people the tools and confidence to start their creative adventures 💪
Ik this sounds dumb, but would it still look great if I color in the background a sky color? (Light Blue)
Yup - Its your painting you can do whatever you like to it.
Awesome video! Do you have any videos on bushes and foreground landscape?
Not yet - but I can add it to the list of up coming videos :)
Can we use a carton surface to practice all kind of features? Clouds, mountains etc?

Yes you can but you will have to gesso your surface first so you paint will stick correctly.
You can put what ever color you want on the tree for highlights - Go nuts and have fun!
After applying the gesso do you still use liquid white or just the gesso?
Yes.
Apply Gesso, let it dry, then add your LW on top. Now you can start painting.
@@WildCreates Thank you, you responded fast. That is great especially if I am in a middle of a painting.
Bravooooo...👋

Did you have the same problem?
This is one of the hardest things to do to be honest.
I will see if I can make a video on it in the future for ya.

Exellent video thx
Glad you enjoyed it
Does it have a bob Ross pallette knife in the Philippines?
I am not sure about your area. Click on this link and see if one populates in your region: geni.us/BobRossPaletteKnife
If not you can always try making your own:
th-cam.com/video/isGFzm2x-3M/w-d-xo.html
Wow you could really paint some trees! P.S. are a certified Ross instructor?
Thanks.
I am not a CRI yet. I tried to go to the classes last year BUT Covid kinda messed everything up.
@@WildCreates oh bummer, but keep the good work because I know that you’re gonna teach Bob Ross classes someday.
Maybe one day I will :)
@@WildCreates 👍
Omg I've always used the brush straight on.....sideways omg!
Ha ha ha - Glad I could blow your mind :)
My trees are good but this is helpful
I am glad I was able to help you out :)
They look like tapered corkscrews
Kinda of a good way of describing it in laymans terms
I think my fan brush sucks. When it’s wet with paint, it splits and looks like a hand with spread fingers. Needless to say, my trees look like shit 😂
Try this:
- Use a soap/conditioner to soft and clean the bristles
- When Painting, turn and dip your elbow and wrist a little. This will make you paint more with the corner of the brush.
- Load a lot of paint into the brush.
Hope that helps a little :)
These evergreens weren't hard at all watching Bob. He say just think of a z. Use corner of the brush to make distant ones
Glad the video could help and that you have become a tree master :)
Yeah dude... these happy little f@#king trees are killing me.
When doing the highlights the paint won't stick and just mushes in... 😤😤😤😤😤
