For real I was the lazy college student. I didn't go to parties (I hate parties and struggle with anxiety and panic disorder), but I was lazyyyyy and didn't go to Church and I ate so much I was Jabba the Hut from which my body is still recovering 😅 I was so negative in college and I'm so happy Jesus never abandoned me and found me again. Please pray me. I'm praying for everyone watching Fr Casey's videos. Thank you Fr Casey for what Jesus does through you.

I ended up going to a small Catholic college where the priests, nuns, and brothers were part of everyday college life. They hung out in the student center, were some of our professors, and best of all they led by example, inculcating us with the importance of service, justice, and peace. And Mass-the chapel was in the middle of campus and the most packed service was Sunday at 11:00 pm.

I went to live away from my parents, and did a Masters degree in Political Science. My university had a student body filled with people with ideas that could be interpreted as being “anti-Catholic”.
One of the biggest advantages I had as being a citizen of a country which has a very small Catholic population, percentage wise, was what made me come off as more of a cultural oddity. People were curious about “why” I chose religion even though I’d take part in and contribute to academic reading circles where prevailing ideas are questioned.
I personally think that you should not stop yourself from exploring and understanding different world views, even those you vehemently disagree with. I’d sit and have discussions with Marxists, Anarchists, religious Nationalists, liberals, Hindus, Muslims, atheists, - and I’d try to be open and frank with discussions of ideas and beliefs, and wherever possible, find points of commonality on ideas, or if disagreements, Remember that the best thinkers and Doctors of the Church actively read and drew inspiration of the works of prevailing philosophers and religious scholars to shape their own beliefs and to form defenses against it. Instead of your worldview and your faith being fundamentally in crisis, what you will find is that your worldview and your faith will be further tempered and strengthened as you compare it with the other alternatives presented to you.
The most important point is to keep going to mass. I had to travel for an hour as there were very few Catholic Churches in the place where I studied, but I recognised that holding on the faith was of extremely high importance in my drive to complete a masters degree and in a drive to keep me in touch of the person who I was. Some of my friends would often come with me to mass, where they’d ask me questions about the faith and why we practiced certain things. Funnily enough, staying away from my family and home made my faith increase over decreasing, as I was driven to hold on to things that reminded me of who I was in an environment that was quite alien to me.
Right now I’m planning to go through this again and work towards getting my doctorate. I’d ask you all to pray that I get into a good university to pursue this ambition of mine. I’m still in the process of figuring out a thesis, but I try to bring in the Catholic Church in some way or the other.

I am at an engineering college, and I was invited to go to a Catholic Church that is apart of the campus from one of my fellow peers.
Even though I am not Catholic, I still made friends with a lot of them. I even went to a 3 hour Easter mass to watch one of my Bible study friends get baptized and become part of the catholic faith.

This is hopefully my last year in college. Thankfully, I think I somehow discovered this channel around the same time I was just going into college. I can relate to a lot of good and bad practices that were mentioned by Fr. Casey. Although I wasn't really into parties and alcohol, I became lazy with very poor sleeping habits. At some point, participating in religious activities became an excuse to escape from world sometimes. Again I'm very thankful that I'm reminded of these. On the other hand, I really enjoyed college and I surrounded myself with good people, even if we shared different views. Indeed, it's difficult to keep the faith while testing my boundaries. But I'm thankful for my community in the church who helped me navigate my journey in faith while in college. I have my shortcomings, but through God's grace, one of the best moments in my life happened in college.
Also, thank you Fr. Casey! God bless you and this channel!

To test your faith, instead of simply maintaining it in college:
Read the Bible for yourself without someone telling you what it means.
Watch some non-angry videos of former Christians who found they could no longer believe.
Take a "Logic and Reasoning" class.
If you do this and still have faith, then you are unlikely to ever lose it.

the Bible is not perspicous. You need to be helped in understanding what the Bible means because many books in it are in genres which are unfamiliar to our ears, and are written in a cultural context that's very far removed from today.

    • @vincewarde
      @vincewarde หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@tafazziReadChannelDescription While there is some truth in what you posted, most of the Bible is pretty clear to the average modern reader. It’s not like someone picking up a good modern English translation is going to miss the basic mean of most passages. A good study Bible, Catholic or Protestant can be a great help in understanding passages that can be more clearly understood in the light of culture and literary style. Although I have a degree in Bible, and have been educated in the science of Biblical interpretation, I never thought that people under my care needed me to explain every passage to them.

    • @Laurelin70

@@vincewardeBut there are also a lot of passages that not educated people could misunderstand, or could take literally, without knowing the context, the gente, the goal of the biblical text they're reading. Always a delight to hear from you. I am glad that you didn’t fall into the fundi trap of blaming higher education for the loss of faith. If you look at the group which retains their faith in university, it has little to do with the university environment, and more to do with the faith environment back at home. Don’t expect young people to integrate their faith into their adult life if it wasn’t at home. Go to mass is just a bandaid to cover the wounds of an unintegrated upbringing. And besides that, do you really believe that they will find the things you promise when they attend mass. Maybe, the campus clergy are a bit more dynamic than parish priest, but only a bit. Most will find the same mechanical recitation and awkward social interaction that caused them not to go to mass as a teenager

However a lot of these students, weren't actually religious, they may had just appeased their parents, or the community, church was an hour of just being bored. Going to college gave them the freedom to decide on what they wanted to do, without an authority forcing them to do the actions.
In many ways college churches can offer more in-depth insight into the religion. As your towns church, basically needs to cader to about an 8th grade education, while a church in college can focus on a higher average education. Where they can explain the more abstract and complex concepts vs. just X is good and Y is bad.

As always, excellent advice - applicable to all Christians, not just Catholics.
That said, I have a fourth suggestion: Get some training in apologetics. Admittedly, this is a passion of mine - however, it is virtually certain that the basis of their faith will be challenged. I recently have taught classes with material from Frank Turek and J Warner Wallace (both fellow evangelicals). While both of these folks are not anti-Catholic, I’m sure that there are Catholics doing good work in defense of the Christian faith - I would start with Catholic Answers.

      @@oliverclark5604 A couple of thoughts:
      1) Apologetics can produce belief THAT, but belief IN is a choice. The first supports the second, but it is the last one - belief IN - that results in salvation. This is not a matter of just knowledge, but of trust.
      2) As a Wesleyan, my beliefs are that we are indeed saved by faith alone, but the kind of faith that saves is NEVER ALONE. It produces regeneration and a changed life. Repentance is not optional! In fact confession and repentance are two sides of the same coin. That said, I think that both Catholics and Wesleyans are on the same page when it comes to where the power to do these "good works" comes from: This too is a gift of God.

Colleges should be a place and time to learn about the way the world is. So if successful, you'll lose your faith and move on to reality.

Not "faith" alone (sola fides) but in uncertainty of belief keeping inseparability of thinking gift procreation role and having faith identity in need of union.

I''ll take the bait. Hope you can make it interesting.
What makes you sure your version of "the way the world is" is correct? Even I don't presume that. How the world actually is doesn't conform to what you or I make of it.

    • @trafalgarlaw8373
      @trafalgarlaw8373 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Jugem16 Of course the world doesn't "conform" to what i assume of it. I'm sure my version of some things are true, it depends on what we're talking about.
However, I don't believe in supernatural things. You're kind of shifting the burden of proof here. It's not required to disprove superstitious and supernatural beliefs in order to assume they are not true.
Over human history, there have been thousands of claimed gods. Many religions, billions of religious people, all disagreeing with each other. They make claims that break the world as we know it. Now, me and you agree that 99.9999% of these beliefs and claims are wrong. Except of course, your special religion that you were most likely raised in, in a society that considers it the norm. Just like a muslim in iran who is convinced of islam.
I presume you are sure that minerals dont give off magic vibes that change atmosphere in a supernatural way. Why are you sure of this? Because there's no proof for it and it goes against what we know of the world. In that same way, I don't believe in a resurecting carpenter moon-walking across the lake is convincing either. Plus, christianity is pretty evil in a lot of its claims. The perfect moral god, murdering innocent children to punish the dad. Explicitly condoning slavery and the purchase of humans as property.
That's alongside the religions we see today having classic patterns amongst themselves, past beliefs and general human workings, while each so convinced they're special.

@@Jugem16 And it's not really bait. This priest is rather rational and calm when it comes to such things. He can correctly talk through some topics. That's why it's all the more sad to see him and followers blankly overlooking gaps in reasoning that they would absolutely tear apart in anyone else's religion.
Plus, it's frustrating to see blatant errors in arguments happily overlooked by followers who see it as perfect arguments, without anyone there to actual contradict or question the claims.

Casey, look at the first lines you said. "Nothing quite like the freedom..." So freedom destroys faith? Interesting argument. If so? I'll take freedom.

It's not either or. If you abuse your freedom, you'll hurt yourself. If you use your freedom wisely, only to choose between different goods, instead of choosing evil, then you'll not lose the Faith.

@@mashah1085 I didn't say that... Thinking and being exposed to other ideas is good! And that's also Father Casey's perspective!
I was just explaining to you how your inference from Father's words was wrong, and you also show to be really bad at logic.
Well if an atheist were good at logic he'd stop being one, so it figures... you need to be helped at thinking because you're clearly bad at it, probably due to your attitude rather than your abilities.

Also I love "Atheists are dumb, if they weren't they wouldn't be atheists" at the end there. 1. Because it violates Paul's Epistle to Titus 3:2 and 2. I really doubt you could last against Sam Harris or the late Christopher Hitchens.
