    Fun fact: Florez made a phone call to Pavarotti right before he had to go on stage to sing this role. 40 years after Pavarotti had a phenomenal success with this aria at the MET at the beginning of his career. Pavarotti encouraged him and he made it very good. Comparing the voices it's like comparing a lovely fountain with the niagara waterfalls. With all respect for Florez and his unbelievable high notes. Every time I hear other tenors I come back to Pavarotti. He has a wonderful timbre and so much volume and feeling in his voice. And something you can not explain. Energy, warmth, love...

      Wow, what a cool tidbit! I love that - I know Pavarotti named Florez as someone whom he expected to take his place. Wonderful that he could encourage Florez before such a pivotal performance. Shame that there's not more footage of Pavarotti performing the role, although I did find some very shaky footage from the wings of a performance. I return to Pavarotti for almost everything, so I agree!

      @@operaanna Yes, Florez is a friendly and very talented guy. But if you know Pavarotti... I also don't know any good video of Pavarotti singing Ah mes amis. Perhaps audio is better because the make up artist had a bad day. What a terrible wig and make up. 🤭 ...the way Pavarotti spoke of other tenors makes me love him even more. I know the interview about Florez, Corelli and others. Florez also admires him and visited him in Pesaro. And lives sometimes there. He often sings there at the Rossini Festival.

      Yeah I think Pavarotti gets more mass or 'chest' into the high Cs. They honestly sound like a machine gun! Florez has a beautiful very agile voice but that force generated by Pavarotti in this is ridiculous for this repertoire.

      Maybe 30 years, but Pavarotti had that succes at the met in 1972, or maybe you mean the one of 1966 at the covent garden?

    Great video! (I just discovered your channel.) We saw Florez at the Met on opening night of "La Fille du Regiment" (April 2008). The only thing more electric than when he hit the 9 C's was when he did an encore immediately afterwards, which brought the house down. It was the first time an encore was sung during a Met performance since 1994 (Pavarotti, "Tosca"). 18 high C's, all perfect. Amazing.

    Fun fact the high Cs were supposed to be falsetto. It was supposed to mimic the alpine yodeling near were Tonio is supposed to be from in the opera!

      ...and this was not a special effect. Tenors routinely sang high notes in falsetto up until the mid-19th century. A high C in full voice in Rossini's 'Guillaume Tell' caused a sensation in Paris in 1837 but caused Rossini to remark that it sounded like "the squawk of a capon [chicken] with its throat cut".

      Yeah but opera is also a theatrical art. Pav was the ultimate park and park, even in his (slightly slimmer) youth, whereas JDF has always been a very believable actor.

      @@ballyhigh11 if you actually read reviews of Pav in the 60s and 70s, people didn’t complain about his acting, they actually praised it. Complaints about his struggles on stage came much later in the 80s and 90s due to his notorious weight gain. One could easily argue JDF wouldn’t have to resort to such extreme physicalities had he the instrument and technique of Pav. But to each his own.

    I think JD Florez was considerably younger than 48 at the time that performance was recorded. Maybe 38 or less? But you're right, he's like the Dorian Gray of opera singers and seems to be eternally 28 no matter what performance I'm watching

      I'm imagine he was 48 when she made this video, but am pretty certain he was in his mid thirties when he performed this opera which i believe was in 2007.

      @@operaanna It was recorded in 2007, so JDF was 34 at the time. He turned 51 in January 2024. I think both he and Javier Camarena (another great tenor) have moved on to different roles in the last 10 years.

    Richtig! In manchen Rollen, Pavarotti war der Einzige mit diesen tollen "Tönen"! Früher gab es Franco Corelli, der genau so "strahlte"! Andere kenne ich bisher nicht mit so einer extremen Stimme! Aber es gibt viele sehr gute "neue" Tenöre, die mir auch gefallen!

    Yes, Pavarotti likely the greatest tenor ever. With Pavarotti, remember it's not only how loud he can get, but the "size" of his voice. Beautifully spread out, No ?? The Daughter of the Regimen is my second favorite comic opera after Don Pasquale. Both are Donizetti operas as my favorite comic operas. Oooh. My apologies to Mozart. The best of the many versions of The Daughter of the Regimen in my opinion is clearly with Diego Flores and Natalie Dessay - both vocally on the mark. Aaaah, but Natalie Dessay 's performance - perfect. The best Marie ever. The most convincing Tom boy. Royal Opera House orchestra - thumbs up.

      @@operaanna It depends on the role. Pav had a magic lyric tenor voice, with the beautiful high extension that allowed him to be a Hercules of the bel canto rep.

    As a tenor I was almost insulted that you didn’t present us first😂😂😂. But honestly: even being a choir tenor is hard work. To learn how to smoothly pass through passagio into high notes with cool resonance in full voice open singing takes a lot of time and practice. But once one knows how, it is sooo cool. You won’t believe this: I learned that only when I completely switched from Soul and Pop to Classical at age 47.
    And guess what: tomorrow watching La Fille du Régiment at Opéra de la Bastille, Paris❤

    I've never been a big fan of Pavarotti. But I love a London recording of Madama Butterfly where he sings Pinkerton. My favorite tenor will always be Jussi Bjorling.

    Thanks for the explanations. Also check out tenor Yijie Shi encoring "Pour mon âme" and nailing the 18 high Cs. The whole production is on TH-cam; it's a 2018 production from Beijing at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. The soprano is very fine as well.

    I sing this aria but only in concerts and only if I dont have another concert in the same week, because this aria kills me.... a lot. I try to sing the 8 cs but the 9th I do an a and I happy with that 😀

    I haven't seen the opera, but as a native French speaker the correct translation would be probably "The Girl in the Regiment" or "The Girl from the Regiment".

      Makes sense, but it's typically translated as The Daughter of the Regiment, also to tie into the story more.

      @@operaanna Yeah, I see why, but I think you then lose the double entendre (daughter or a female soldier?). Actually I'd translate it as "The Girl of the Regiment". (Side note: you might be able to tell that I used to work in the translation industry).

      @@ludovico6890 oh, of course. Interesting take, although she never really picks up arms to fight even though she motivates the men to do so...i think daughter is usually chosen because of the way she was found on the battlefield and subsequently raised by the regiment, but i could be wrong.
      I do love a double entendre though! 🤪

      @@operaanna True story. Her name is Claudine Côté. She did it at the beginning of her career, she won a competition or something. Will get back to you with more details about it. I feel very privileged for having learned from her, although sometimes I wished I had developed my talent more seriously.

    Wasn’t the love forbidden because Marie was supposed to marry the Duke of Crakenthorp?
    And she was French and Tonio was Tyrolean which was another strike against him.
    But they marry anyway, so it all worked out as operas usually do. Lol.

      That's right! But MUCH later in the opera when her long lost aunt/mother finds her. Also the Tyrolean thing, but i mentioned that, no? It always seems to work out in the comic operas at least 😅

      @@operaanna The regiment is French (i.e., the invaders), and Tonio is Tyrolean (i.e., part of the Austrian Empire), hence the regiment sings, "...pour un ennemi. Non!" Donizetti wrote and debuted this in Paris, so the audience didn't see Tonio as a turncoat. (That's also probably why Tonio's location is changed to Switzerland in the Italian version, since Tyrol spans parts of Austrian and Italy).

    Hey, I'm glad I've found your video! It's nice that you explain the whole scene and the build up. "La fille du régiment" is my favorite opera. Probably because I like happy endings and it's hard to find one in opera world ;) And I think that this version with Desay and Florez is wonderful, especially with Natalie's acting skills and Juan's light voice.

    Lovely video. Pavarotti is great at this aria, but is he really the greatest tenor of all time? I'd say no, despite I LOVE Pavarotti. I think he's the best in this aria, but there are many other arias that other tenors simply sing it better (for example, Corelli in Nessun Dorma).

    Hmm... I liked Pavarotti as well, though sopranos had their reservations - at least in part because of his partiality to garlic. Standing with 10 feet of him blasting away and all the flies dropping from the loft to their deaths. You kind of understand it. The problem with Pavarotti was that he was uneven - one night he was splendid - the next, hmm... so so.
    Picking La Fille de Refiment is a choise; but I sort of like the story behind the opera L'elisir d'amour. It was sung by Enrico Caruso and he took 3 da capo's which is some panache.
    Here with sung by Rolando Villazón, that repeats once - despite being asked by Schenk: "Are you sure???" Normally you don't take da capos, because it will mean risking a failure in the repitition.
    If I am correct: The lead in is by the basoon - normally for the barytone.
    But what I like about Villazón is he makes the sopranos sound better than they are - especially Anna Netrebko (Анна Нетребко). And she sounds much better in a duet. She has the stage presence and look (Ok, she gained weight - but so do we all).

      I recall being told about the garlic "problem" now that you mention it. 👃😩 I've never read that he was uneven, though! Where can I find info on that?
      I would love to do na Aria Explained on Caruso singing una furtiva lacrima- it is STUNNING. (Hmmm next tenor aria explained? 😏)
      I've seen the Rolando video before, which is thrilling although encores STRAIGHT after the aria has been done always breaks the magic for me which you say as well. Not my thing so much.     i really enjoy your channel, Good work. Can you answer a stupid question. When you learn an opera, do you just learn the words or do you understand the language or a bit of both?? Silly question, but I am curious.

      Thank you! And definitely not a stupid question, no worries. I mainly sing in German, Italian, and French, and i speak varying degrees of each language (and similar words tend to pop up a lot over and over). That being said i have to translate and commit to memory everything regardless! If i don't know the meaning of a word, you can immediately *feel* it as an audience member, and i think that's true of any singer. For some reason you can just tell when someone doesn't know what they're saying, and it's a hugely important part of learning a role or a song!

    Pavarotti is undoubtedly one of the greatest, but the prince of tenors was Franco Corelli IMHO. Cheers

      Fully obsesseddd with Corelli. I'm on a mission to get him as popular as Pavarotti. 😅 (fully unrealistic I know) I looked at his Vesti la giubba a few months ago 😍😍😍

      @@operaanna You are absolutely right. He is my role model as a tenor- my voice teacher (Martile Rowland) sang Lucia at the Met next to his Edgardo and had nothing but wonderful stories about him as both a singer and a gentleman. What a treasure that man was.

    Goddess if you care my favorite 4 tenors are LP, Mario Del Monaco, Mario Lanza, Antonio Paoli but considering Corelli. did you know A.Paoli kept breaking the gramaphone at 20 feet away facing it so they had to turn him away from it for all his recordings!!!

    yes he was a big man with a huge resonating chambers, you can't get the same sound out of a little skinny violin of a tenor as you do with a stand up bass.

    Did you think that this high c is more of a falsetto - a height of musical notes that many teenagers can easily reach? Pavarotti had nothing to do with that scenario - but unfortunately he is to blame. The real opera music stopped at him and from him the new "opera" began, where television is everything. Opera means: Beniamino Gigli. Callas, Corelli ,Mario Del Monaco , Tucker, Merill, and many others, forgive me for forgetting them, but this is the old generation, where voices don't have to be processed to be heard by the public no matter where they play. But if you young people want something else, and you're probably right, because the world is moving forward; ....!!!!!!!!!?????? , continue to glorify the new ones. They don't have voices but microphones, studios where their voices are changed ...... they are just ..... I can't find the right word, but if you find it you put it in parentheses, for me the one who disputes everything. ()

      Hey Dan, thanks for your comment! It's interesting what you say about the high C, although I think it was Gilbert Duprez who first sang the "full chest" high C (which Rossini HATED). I'm not sure Pavarotti himself was to blame for the television-ization of opera. I would argue that theaters themselves backed themselves into a corner with that... I agree that the last 50 years or so of singers has been interesting, and the most famous singers of the time aren't necessarily the most talented. We still have some amazing singers, though! Bartoli, Didonato, Julia Bullock, and Florez(!)
      That being said, I think there needs to be more light shed on old singers - planning a series.... 😉

      @@operaanna You don't even know how happy I am that you liked it? That's what you young people who go to the opera have to see and hear, you have to! The diaphragm and the voice she holds are the beauty of the work and the larynx that changes a lot over time. The diaphragm that he certainly uses professionally is what gives it quality and support. I'm not a teacher, I'm just a 58-year-old man who regrets not following his heart in his youth. And I could easily get to c4 but not c4 means opera .... Corelli was not the happiest when he had to play in c4 because the note no longer offers the necessary quality but you have to make compromises. Keep looking for the old ones. You have to learn from them. The soprano or tenor, baritone or bass used the diaphragm as the propellant of sound. And the halls vibrated at their notes without today's microphones.

      Hey Dan, interesting take indeed. The Top C can sound and in truth is more falsetto in certain tenor voices (both past and present) than others. It depends on the color of the voice, the fach, the periodof the opera, the language AND YES CERTAINLY HOW RECORDED. Dan, please don`t write off young singers. Most of them worhship the demi-gods you mentioned ....why else would they consider for a moment taking on such a brutal profession ...and let's face it...a pretty tough crowd )))

    Luciano's voice was a lot more substantial than Florez with a lot less vibrato. Luciano had none of the nasal sound that Florez has. But Florez has an ability with high notes that few contemporary tenors have, but he will never get to the same level as Pavarotti.
    Within the tenor sphere in terms of voice Luciano Pavarotti was without comparison except perhaps for Lanza from the film world and Caruso from the world of the opera. Domingo was a totally different type of tenor, far more dramatic and without top C and top D, Carreras again was not the same type of tenor. Again there Gigli, Schipa were totally different types of tenor.

    Why only 9 high c´s and not 37. Why not measure who is the loudest, who can hold the longest note, doing most trills in a row, the widest vibrato, the slowest vibrato, the most spinning vibrato. Why not also highlight for example opera Elektra (R. Strauss) and check out for how long a normal person can endure such a piece😀.

Mucha gente prefiere a Caruso, yo prefiero a Pavarotti pero disfruto a cualquiera que cante bien y en este caso también me gusto la versión de Juan Diego. Lo que me atrajo al video fue ver la opinión de alguien que también disfruta a Pavarotti, ver que le apasiona igual que a mi, pero al hacerlo a un lado por Juan Diego pues... Me equivoque aquí no era. Por ello gracias por la invitación al nuevo video pero siento que será fingido o solo descriptivo por eso no estaré pendiente de el.

      @Bandarte haha i definitely enjoy Caruso and the older singers, it's just really hard to find videos of them! Even with Pavarotti that was the case. i will be doing more videos that incorporate older singers in 2023, not just with video. Not sure what you mean by that it's fake or descriptive, I'm just trying to entertain with opera and when i made the video these 2 singers seemed like a good fit for the video!

      Umm sorry i can't read Russian, but if you're asking why i didn't include Rockwell Blake or Alfredo Kraus in the video, there are a lot of amazing singers and I just decide to go with Pav and Floris for this one. I would LOVE to do a video with Blake and Kraus though. They're amazing!

Marie goes to live with the Marquise who tries to make her a 'proper lady' as it were, but she hates it and doesn't want to go through with the arranged marriage, but then the regiment and Tonio come and everyone lives happyily ever after.

    They are so different types of tenors and for this particular role, Flores’ voice seems to fit the character. But my favorite is Javier Camarena, having cuteness and power in one package.

      There are no nine high c’s, i heard only 4 but actually they are bflats.

      @@phoebusapollo4677 well I didn't check the tuning, but in the score they are most definitely C's. Sometimes compression needed to upload to TH-cam changes the pitch. And other than that I literally have a counter so unless you didn't watch all the way through, I don't know how you got 4 😅

      @@operaanna I have perfect pitch. And I have trained as a Hindustani Classical singer of the Benares Gharana , and then trained on a full scholarship at the Rome Conseratoire as a lyric tenor with Gianni Bavaglio.
