how to make paper • no blender + indoor papermaking [craftvlog tutorial]

  • ☆ in my other handmade paper videos, i got asked if there was a way to make paper without the blender. i took on the challenge and experimented with the process - tldr; yes, you can make paper without the blender, plus you can do it all indoors!

    ☆ notes:
1/ SIZING. Paper internal sizing, and most hand papermakers use a chemical called 'alkyl ketene dimer', which protects and coats each fiber. This essentially makes your paper writable. I'm not sure if this will affect the seeds in any way, but as you will see in the video, I did not use such chemical and I was able to write on and stamp on ink on the sheet with zero bleeding. This can be also attributed to the fact that the paper I used to make the pulp already has has sizing.
2/ MOULD & DECKLE. I had the mould and deckle custom made this time to the size that I want. It is a wooden frame. Unlike my first video where I used an improvised one, a silk screen, this custom made one I use in the video uses a metal mesh. And the metal mesh lifts much easier compared to the silk screen one.
3/ THICKNESS OF SHEET. As I mentioned, my intention behind making this paper is turn them into tags. In order to adjust thickness of the sheet I've found that adding more water in the basin helps. Just to let you know, thinner paper sheets are more prone to tears.
hope you enjoy watching this video!

I also reccomend taking a jar and put some rocks in there. Put the soaked paper in there, close the jar, and just shake it. The rocks will grind the paper into palp. If needed, you could manually pound the palp after for finer pieces.

Oh yeah, it could work as well, I'm gonna try making handmade papers for the first time in my life! I'll try this as well as I'll have to grind the paper, and make the pulp myself, not using the grinder, cuz my mom won't let me do that!

I make my own paper for watercolour painting and sketching, I put my torn paper and water in a large saucepan bring it to a boil and then simmer it until it disintegrates into fine pulp, so much easier and quieter. You could probably leave it overnight in a slow cooker as well.

Thnx a lot i just made them and it turned out well. But the only problem i had was i couldn't transfer them into the cloth (maybe it's because i used a frame made out of cross stitch cloth instead of an actual frame and i used a tissue to remove the excess water.) I let it dry on the frame and it came out pretty easily. 😁
oh also i used a hammer to grind them. So if you're going to try that use whatever you have you don't need special tools for that. 🙂

Regarding what you mentioned about sizing in the description, I watched a video on how to make paper from cotton, and they used a cup of leaf gelatin, which they had purchased from a store. They also said they could have used a cup of starch in lieu of the gelatin. I'm guessing they meant corn starch. They had an about half a blender full of pulp, so you'd use less starch or gelatin depending on the amount of pulp you were making, of course.
Anyway, using gelatin or starch would be easier and safer (IMO) than having to get some weird chemical with a long name. Lol

    • @shacee
      @shacee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks for this info!🧡 Others might fi d this useful if they don't have access to sizing.
I've been experimenting with CMC, it's actually food grade - similar to gelatin and is added to most food so it's also safe for consumption. 🤗

    1. Use her technique for making the paper up to removing the deckle.
    2. Carefully place flower bits and glitter stars around the border.
    3. Use the sponge as she did and peal off paper onto parchment baking sheet so you get a flat surface.
    4. Dry flat on parchment outside in sunny spot.
    5. Once dry, paint with one part glue and two parts water then lay an outer unprinted ply of a napkin inside the border.
Now print each sheet with a wedding invitation using inkjet printer.
