Bro... we're all one. Bollywood is not India. It's mostly karachiwood sponsored by anti Indian elements. Our south Indian movie industry is actually proudly preserving the whole Indian emotions.
You'll rarely found sanskrit chants in a Bollywood movie but more portraying muslims as good ones, saviour, rich bla bla blah... but actually south industries proudly showcase the Indian/Hindu realistic legacy. 👍
For your information 13million budget is small for india. KGF was made with just 13million with top notch quality. There many Most expensive Indian films like RRR movie ₹400 crore (US$53 million), Radhe Shyam movie ₹350 crore (US$46 million) 2.0 movie - ₹575 crore (US$76 million), Adhipurush ₹500 crore (US$66 million),..etc Note this. Director of KGF (Prashant Neel) he make big movie with very small budget. His next movie SALAAR is just ₹150 crore (US$20 million).
And all the money is on the screen. In the US, a $53M movie could be a small romantic comedy. Certainly a big FX epic would cost $100M+ easily. So the money goes farther in India.

When I first heard about KGF 1, I was like "not another gaster movie". After watching it, I was "WOW!!!!", the best gangster movie I ever watched. Truly waiting for part 2.
This film is from Karnataka, a state from South India but the movie is made with many actors from all over India to give a Pan-Indian feel.
That's interesting. Trying to understand all the different languages and film industries in India is difficult. And using actors from all over India adds to that. I like the term Pan-Indian. I will use it myself. Thanks.

1. Bollywood is not a genre, it is a film industry like Hollywood
2. There are several such industries in India as it is highly multilingual
3. Song and dance is not exclusively a specific genre in India. They are integral part of all genres of films, though variety of music changes according to mood of the scene/movie/genre.
4. While sometimes you find songs pop out of no where (many times they can be fun too if music and choreography is good), in other instances music becomes very important medium to convey the emotions of the movie and move the story forward. Many a times even action sequences are backed by background songs, which elevates the whole mood of the scene.
5. Unlike rest of the world that follows 1st act, 2nd act and 3rd act template, Indian cinema follows the template of two halves I. E. all movies are structured by keeping intermission/interval in mind. This started decades ago by keeping cinema canteen business in mind. Now, it is part of the culture. So, Indian filmmakers have to write screenplays by keeping two high points in mind to keep audience engaged, one at interval point and other at the climax.
Extremely helpful. Yes, music is an integral part in most cinema, but with films from Indian cinema, it is even more integral. The lyrics - even though I can't understand them -- must push the character motivations forward and the story forward also. In U.S. cinema, sometimes music just conveys a mood and the lyrics are superfluous to the story line.

Bollywood (hindi language), Kollywood (tamil) , tollywood (Telugu), mollywood(malayalam), sandalwood (Kannada). Bollywood had bigger market due to huge hindi population but things have changed these days because of dubbing industry.

Very kind words. As we've mentioned many times, this is a door opening for us. We had our pre-conceived ideas of what Indian cinema was. And we were wrong. Gladly to be wrong. What a great surprise for us to see all these interesting films - and I know we are focusing mostly on the bigger budgets epics, but we will get to the smaller films also. Just so much to discover and also keep reviewing films from the U.S. and other countries!
