The true horror of the mummy girl (real name unknown) is that she was awake and aware the whole time she was a mummy. That's how she could speak English, and how she knew all the places she had been, where the exhibit had been displayed. If Giles had succeeded in reassembling the seal, she would have been sent back to that living hell. At least now she can rest in peace.

i'm just really happy that in the moment that xander was answering the "why not willow?" question, he didn't do that thing that all insecure teenagers do and go all "her? gross, she's like my sister, i would NEVER!" and be all accidentally hurtful about it. i'm glad he gave a serious answer and honestly, a pretty mature one. it's fair to compartmentalize your friends, especially the important ones so as to try to avoid ruining the relationship. he's oblivious, yes, but not hurtful.

Something that a lot of people do not realize is the the Inca Princess, her name was not Ampata. Ampata Gutierrez was a Peruvian exchange student that arrived in Sunnydale in late 1997. After his death, Ampata had his identity taken by the Inca Princess. AND, I liked Seth Green's appearance in this episode.

6:52 How is Xander asking if they need to speak Spanish and saying the limit of his knowledge of Spanish is Dorito and chihuahua racist? Did you want him to assume that the teen from South America would obviously be fluent in English? Because THAT would be racist, assuming that if people are going to visit our country they need to speak our language. Xander just wasn't assuming Ampata would have to know English to participate in the exchange program, and making a mocking joke about the fact that he doesn't speak Spanish. But all the derision was directed at himself, not at the expected foreign teen.
EDIT: His speaking slowly and making hand-gestures when "Ampata" had clearly spoken English, though? That you can rag on him for, because at that point, he did deserve a dope-slap for stupidity. Rule of thumb, if someone speaks English to you, speak English back like you would normally, unless they specifically ASK you to speak slowly. And if they ask you to speak slowly, only use hand-gestures if they are confused at that point, and only in response to them asking for clarification. Because if they don't want clarification, then they may be trying to puzzle it out, and upon doing so, they will most likely confirm they are right with you, which will help them learn the language they're clearly trying to learn at that point better than if you rush them.
EDIT 2: And I'm just going to leave the dance theme alone, as it's just the unfortunate side of its time. Honestly, as a person of Japanese descent, I'm actually not too bothered by people appropriating my culture, as long as they do it with the respect and attention to detail it deserves. But a dance like that? So few people actually would. You'd probably at best have some weeaboo who read two manga, and assumed he clearly understands the honor and history behind what he's wearing. So, yeah... "Culture Dances" are just asking to offend everyone from everywhere.

Oz definitely the coolest character in The Buffyverse. Nobody does laid back like Oz, his witty one liners and observations are brilliant throughout the whole show. When he says 'you're only interested in a girl who can walk or talk' reply 'she doesn't have to talk', the look on OZ's face. Inca Mummy Girl one of the weaker episodes of S2 Xander showing his complete innocence and gullibility. We all feel for Willow who at this stage in the show is so meek and quiet, always feeling looked over. We all seem to forget what an awful bully and generally horrible vacuous person Cordelia was, totally putting down Willow at every opportunity throughout the early parts of the show, we see that again here. The metaphor of the show saying basically looks aren't everything, and be careful as things are never what they seem. Jonathan gets a lucky escape here along with Xander also. Xander comes through at the end and saves Willow's life. Great foreshadowing again here with Xander and his 'taste in women'.

I appreciated that it was really the first one to provide some insight into the motivations of those who created the Slayers -- and what it does to the lives of the girls chosen.
    Plus, Seth Green! 😁
Sooo, here are some fun questions:
What, exactly, rates as "cultural appropriation" as opposed to "cultural imperialism"?
If a band in (say) Poland playes jazz, is that "cultural appropriation" of black American culture?
Or has jazz become so integrated into American culture that it's no longer peculiar to black America?
If that's the case, then does a Polish jazz band count as, "cultural imperialism," instead?
Alternatively, if a Nigerian singer decides to make rap music, has he or she "culturally appropriated" modern urban American Black culture?
Or, has that Nigerian become the victim of American cultural imperialsm, because he or she has *chosen* to make rap music, instead of native Nigerian music?
Or, if the Nigerian *chooses* to blend rap with music from his people, has American culture then "polluted" Nigerian culture?
Also, manga and anime have become hugely popular in the United States (and the rest of the world).
Does that mean Japan has engaged in worldwide cultural imperialism -- including, cultural imperialism against the United States?
Or has the entire rest of the world "appropriated" Japanese popular culture -- and, in so doing, increased the wealth and influence of Japanese manga and anime creators?
    What about K-Pop?
Has South Korea "culturally appropriated" American popular music beats and rhythms?
Or have people such as Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Beyonce acted as agents of American imperialism, and have undermined Korean native culture?
Basically, what counts as "cultural appropriation" and what counts as "cultural imperialism"?
Can cultural ideas spread from one people to another without counting as either?
If so, how can you tell what's what?

Love the reaction to Mummy Empata waking up once the seal broke.
From a preying mantis to a mummy. 👍 Xander. 🤣
Recognizing Seth Green because of the fame he gained after this is a little amusing to me as this is where I first learned his name.
I definitely agree that Joyce was trying to "rub it in." There's not enough character growth from the "try not to get kicked out" disappointment mentality to now to show otherwise. And it has been "a week" since the last episode when she said _it_ (meaning Buffy saving everyone and taking care of herself making Joyce not rag on her) would last "at least a week." Plus the fact that Buffy wasn't going to the dance while Joyce commented on how Empata was already fitting in. She was rubbing it in, whether she realized it or not.
16:21-16:31 Its high schooler's in the nineties. With those two facts, this dance was actually accurate to how the time period and what the age group thought of other cultures.

Mark 9:18. Howdy! 🤠 Now that you've finally seen, Seth Green, appear in this series, quickly now, react to, "My Stepmother is an Alien", starring actress, Kim Basinger, as the titlular character. Alyson Hannigan, is the stepdaughter, Dan Aykroyd, is her father, and Seth Green, is her boyfriend! Then you should enjoy their interaction in this series more. 😎👍
    Quote:
Trying to rescue her home planet from destruction, a gorgeous extraterrestrial named Celeste (Kim Basinger) arrives on Earth and begins her scientific research. She woos quirky scientist Dr. Steve Mills (Dan Aykroyd), a widower with a young daughter (Alyson Hannigan). Before long, Celeste finds hers… More
    End quote.

Enough with the 90’s music joke. Buffy had one of the best soundtracks of any TV show from the 90’s. The joke was barely funny in TED and not funny every time you repeat it.

Seth Green dated Allyson Hannigan before this; he was her boyfriend in "My Stepmother Is an Alien," a sci-fi rom-com with Dan Aykroyd and Kim Basinger.

Mark 14:16. Catch 22! Unpacking the case violates the visitor's privacy, but then again, Buffy, knows where to put the contents, and that keeps the visitor from having an excuse to snoop around! (As per Daytime Drama rules!) However, thinking ahead, means that, Buffy, should have a space prepared in advance already, for just such an occasion, and so the guest does not get to snoop, and if caught doing so, now you know that the guest is up to no good! Like planting evidence on you, per Prime Time Drama Rules! 🤓

Hey, I pun the disease name with the ancient country name too! On my fantasy map, that's in my mind for now, it is there with, "Gabrielle Union"! 😅🤣
That odd boy? If he wasn't about to do an experiment, maybe he was about to cast a spell? 🤔
"Drowning Puppy"?! Aha! So you aren't familiar with the movie about the woman that claimed, "Dingoes Ate My Baby"?
So, your attitudes towards, Grunge, tells me that it is finally over! Right? 🤔
I haven't listened to a car radio since 2003, since I no longer have a long commute to warrant it. So I'm not up to date on categories of, Music.

Pike is the name of the Spike character in the Buffy movie. Played by Luke Perry.

    • @sadfaery
      @sadfaery 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I would not consider Pike to be a Spike character. I mean, for starters, Pike wasn't a vampire. He was more of the outsider type getting the pretty girl, which was more of an 80s/early 90s movie trope.

The actor who plays Rodney went on to star in the TV series version of Lethal Weapon a few years ago as the character played by Mel Gibson in the movies. Until he got fired from his own show for bad behavior.
