- Come along as we take a closer look at the ancient cold hardy ichang lemon, otherwise known as shangjaun or Hsiang yuan. This one definitely his a history as deep and rich as it’s flavor. With a cold tolerance around 10F and known to grow all the way in Portland Oregon, this is definitely and underrated tough citrus variety that can be grown in the Carolina’s no problem. Thanks for tuning in fellow citraholics 💪🍊

Would you be willing to do a video on tips and tricks for helping keep citrus trees alive in zones that are pushing the limits? You are so knowledgeable on this subject, I and many others would greatly appreciate a video on how to help push the limits of citrus in zones that are cold. I have never found a video like that and it could be a real hit. Either way, thank you so much for your videos, they are a real blessing. Take care
I got my seed order from you in today. Thanks a million!
Awesome 💪🍊🌱🌱🌱 Thank you 🙏
We planted all four varieties you sent us on 01/28/2024 and we have one Dunstan Citrumelo that has sprouted today!! Cant wait to see the rest show their little faces 😊
That is super exciting 💪🌱🍊 it won’t be much longer now!!
Nice review! If it is anything like the 10° Tang its probably going to be a very vigorous grower for sure
The seeds I have planted are huge and they sprout super fast. Definitely vigorous so far!!! Thanks for stopping by 💪🍊
Do u sell seeds or trees @Toughcitrus
Yes we do!! 💪🍊 toughcitrus.com/seeds
Man I hope you get more subscribers soon bro. Your content is underrated!
Do you have any citrus breeding projects in the works? Do you think you'll ever take over for Stan as he gets older?
I really appreciate that brother!! 🙏 i do have some young seedling trees that are from I can tell new varieties it I do have a few breeding projects in the works but I will keep you posted as n any successes and maybe how I hand pollinate citrus crosses. I don’t think I could ever fill Stan’s shoes, those are some big shoes to fill, Stan is spunky and I keep telling him if he ever retires to the beach and sells the farm, to let me know. But Stan’s kids and grandkids all work and help him at the farm too. His granddaughter was helping pack up plants for shipping when I was there last weekend 💪
@@toughcitrus That's so great to know a guy like that! I want to become that type of person for my local area someday. I might specialize in stone fruit or goumi berry but I really want to do some important work and educate people on something like he and you do!
I got 3 ichang lemon seedlings i got the seeds from Virginia Fruit Grower, just ordered the 3 pack seeds from your website
That is awesome brother!!! Ichang is definitely one to have. Appreciate the order🙏 expect a nice fellow TH-cam gardener surprise since I know I can watch them grow in your videos 🤫 mondays are the days I ship out so you should get ‘em by Wednesday 💪🍊 much love
Great video! Sounds like I should try one here in zone 7.
the problem in colder climate is that it has to be pick before severe frost and ichang lemon is too late for Poland
Absolutely buddy 👍 these are really tasty and if they grow them in Portland and Raleigh North Carolina you should definitely try in north Alabama!!! Thanks for stopping by 💪🍊
@@toughcitrus which is the earliest one to be able to pick before severe frost in December or November in a colder climate ,with a little bit of night frost .
@@piotrwojdelko1150 this one, the ichang is a little more late ripening. But all of the trifoliate hybrids like the citrandarins, citremons and citrumelo are very early. Early November through Christmas. You can even get them closer to Halloween but they get sweeter as it gets a little colder at night I would say. Mid November they taste great 💪🍊
@@toughcitrus I would like to have Citrandarin US 852,but not sure about ripening time .Prague Citsuma looks like it is earlier but not sure .In Switzerland one yuzu clone 1 survived up to -20C 0 F or more .Hana Yuzu it is more fragrant but less cold reistant like 3 F .Yuzu clone 1 is the earliest one can ripe in Provence France in September. Switzerland has a similar climate zone because in Switzerland there are mountains
Sounds like a good one for us over there too!
Absolutely brother, super cold hardy. Do you have tiawanica by you? It’s even more cold hardy and not trifoliate either
@@toughcitrus that’s not one I’ve come across over here either. It’s very difficult to get anything cold hardy other than trifoliate, unfortunately.
hi,
it's a "super yuzu" not very well known.
I grafted this one last year, I can't wait to see it bear fruit! here in Europe it is easy to find.
That is fantastic that it’s an easy variety to get over there!!! I know Europe doesn’t have access to most of the hybrid and trifoliate types like we do in the states. Super yuzu 💪🍊
We lOve our iChang lemons!! 🍋
They are awesome 💪🍋 and make such a great juice too. I have heard they make great mixed drinks and cocktails too but havnt tried yet!! 🍸🍹
My favorite citrus guys in one place
@@BrokeFarmer lol, it’s like a chess club for all the citrus nerds 😅 love my fellow citrus brothers 💪🍊
I have one on it's second year in ground near Raleigh. It took some leaf damage a few weeks ago when it got into the teens but the stems are all green. Hoping it'll recover in the spring 🤞
Post a video on it! That’s awesome!
@@ross2398 absolutely 💯
💪🍋 wow, it seems Raleigh is one place that citrumelo and now ichang. That’s is really cool Eric!!! NC citrus 💪🍊
@@toughcitrus Interestingly I had some little seedling yuzus, no more than 6in tall that I also left out in that cold snap.
No damage on them! Yuzu may be slightly more hardy than Ichang Lemon, which would make sense if it really is a Yuzu x Pomelo cross.
Also no damage on Thomasville or Sinton citrangequats.
@@eric-nc wow!! Tough citrus for
Sure 💪🍊
Mine is surviving it’s first year in ground so far here in Richmond VA 7b
That is awesome 😎 are you covering it for the first few years or is it unprotected? Curious how it does 👀 keep me posted 💪🍊
Covering and using water next to when we get into the teens. But 20s it’s uncovered
@@scotte3728 that is awesome 👍
All of the ichang citrus seed from you I have germinated and they have produced 2 sprouts per seed. Is that normal??
Yea it’s called poly embryonic. Really common with yuzu and yuzu hybrids.
@@toughcitrus very neat. Seems like it's happening with most of the seeds now that I've looked closer. 852, Dunstan and swingle all showing high numbers of poly embryonic seed.
@@Spencer_Plant_Projects that’s awesome 💪🍊
Video оn 9.08 sec...what's name.?grand lemоn?😮
Grand frost lemon. It won first place 🥇 I don’t know much about it but if I remember it’s a mutated variant of ichang lemon from Georgia. Would like to get my hand on one ☝️ almost seedless and darker flesh 💪🍋
