Every Saab owner with a 900 knows this trick or should learn this, the 900 came with an unsynchronized reverse gear so it would grind when you go into gear. Essentially what you’re doing when you are going to first second and then reverse is your slowing down the rotation of the gears inside the transmission, allowing it to align easier.
And this whole time I thought it was just my TKO 600 doing the reverse grind. I got into the habit of putting it into 5th then reverse, same result either way.
I learned this trick driving my fathers 56 ford f100 with 3 on the tree. I believe first gear isn't synchronized while second gear is. I believe putting it in second slows the rotation of the transmission preventing the grinding when shifting into reverse. This is sometimes necessary at idle when shifting from neutral to first gear too.
I had similiar problem when the engine was really cold. It seemed like the clutch was dragging just a bit. Reverse was not synchronized so there had been excesive grinding. What I found is if I was to first select any forward gear and then quickly go to reverse the grinding was gone. Don't know why the clutch was dragging like that when it was cold, it started to happen right after a new clutch set made by LUK was fitted. After driving for about a kilometer the symptom was gone so I just kept driving it like that for years.
This is a trick (actually we used 5th) for every T5 transmission in S10s and Mustangs...All you are doing is stopping the cluster gears with the syncros of whatever forward gear you are putting it in before reverse...On old granny low 4-speeds, we would use 2nd gear to stop the transmission before putting the trans into unsyncro'd 1st. - Same thing needed to engage a transmission mounted PTO...need to stop the cluster gears or it will grind!
I was going to say double clutch it, but I suppose that works too and it's easier to make the hand do something extra than the foot. Worn reverse syncro? That would make an interesting video if you ever tear it down. Thanks, Eric!
For the 3 guys still on the planet that have a stick shift Fairmont 😂
TKO600 is a very common transmission tremec makes that people put in old muscle cars because they have an overdrive gear
My first car was a Ford Fairmont!! Got it for $150.00 in 2003. I loved it!!!
I discovered this trick on my 99 zx2. Really helpful when you gotta park in tricky spots.

Thanks for the tip Eric
Lovely and clean interior 👌

How about a video of your Fairmont
My Datsun has an unsyncronized reverse. I do the same. But had I known you had this issue (and didn't know) I wish I suggested it to you years ago.

For some unknown reason, I always just move it up to third and then reverse. 👍
You actually don’t have to do 1st gear, still works if you just go 2nd to reverse. Old school tremec tip.

Seeing that USB dongle plugged into the cigarette lighter (which I suppose is now referred to as the 12V DC outlet) gives me pause.
Really any manual car that don't have synchros on their reverse gear can be applied in this scenario. I've been doing this for years.
I like the elmer fudd shift knob ..huhuhuhu..
T56 seems much smoother
Or just wait a second
The AX15 transmissions in 90s Jeeps and Dakotas are like that, I usually go into 4th first then reverse.
Generally, ANY gear stops the input shaft from spinning. Then go to Reverse.
True. That is the case on my `79 Firebird super t-10.
