- The girls are back to teat seal the heifers which I am fully sold on that it is money well spent. Kerry is joining them today who is a Vet and this year they are pulling any out that are suspicions of being empty and she is going to check them and see if they are.

More milk for longer I thijk
Love your videos! We’re watching in sunny Leeds, England! 🏴🇳🇿
Awesome thanks!!
It’s been a great 3years watching your channel grow 100x since I put that comment on Toms channel. Congrats buddy, you deserve every bit of success you’ve achieved. From Scott sub no.278.
I’m forever grateful honestly! Thanks Scott 👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer just wish that one day we’ll meet and have beer, also congrats on the new little one.
Great job on the vid... your grass is looking good.. cattle as well.. stay safe 🏴
As a keen breeder myself. The variables are stature and live weights of the sire. As the nz BVs are across breed then you do have some short jersey bulls and naturally lighter live weight BVs.
Awesome video as always Andrew! Answering your question in my opinion some of it is down to genetics but same cow and bull can have bigger offspring and some could be smaller, and I believe some of it is down to there feeding as a calf. I find my later calves just never do as well as the July born calves. They eventually catch up after one season of milking.
I think that’s due to the earlier ones being fed milk for longer. I did talk about that a bit a while ago, I spoke to my cousin who said we need to feed milk for longer to get more calcium into them for growth which makes sense.
Definitely agree with what you’ve said 👍
Good video love the landscape
Farming is a good job. Cows play a very important role in our lives. I pray to Allah that you have a good life🇧🇩🇧🇩🇧🇩🇧🇩
Grass is Looking good.
I would like to say that I love your videos ❤ most of them are very helpful as I want to be a dairy farmer when I grow up❤❤❤
Thanks mate and good luck, I hope you come into the industry 🐄 👌
@@TheOnceADayFarmerthanks have a good day or night mate
Like humans we are all different. You should be teat sealing your cows too. Great video
Yep that’s true, I’ve debated it with Martha in the past and have opted not to do it as I don’t think I get to many mastitis issues around calving, but definitely one to look into again
Hi good idea
Holy cow, that grass , 😮😂
Dear Andrew Size and uniformity of heifers and cows is a combination of genetics , sires used and management of the cows from calves to heifers and cows . Broadly speaking on genetics it comes down to cow model of the bull used American Sires tend to be taller in stature , whilst European Bulls from Holland , Scandinavia , Australia tend to be shorter and suited to pasture based systems . On the management side it comes down to growing out the animals consistently until fully grown . Once calves are weaned you would want to start feeding and working towards a high energy carbohydrate diet ration to enhance growth of the cows . So ask your feed consultant and nutritionist to tweak the ration in favour of more carbs and the correct ratio of protein and fats . Useful feed additives and buffers would work well to promote growth uniformity which would prepare the cows for their upcoming first lactation and still be able to grow fully . As a general rule of thumb look for the happy lines in the cows as a visual to indicate cows are in top condition . Looking at the cows in your parlour they do seem to be in good shape , maybe include a bit more silage and concentrate in their ration for height and size .
Thanks for the answer! Very detailed and much appreciated 👍
Lots of grass for nearly mid winter 😮
Winter doesn’t start until June in the Waikato😂
Haha yeah winter hasn’t really started yet 😅
Hi I like your video
Do you teat seal the cows?Because a cows teats are open but heifers teats are sealed naturally
No don’t do the cows, something to maybe revisit again 👍
@TheOnceADayFarmer I am in UK and even cows who get dry tubes get sealant as well.
Also you could apply some basics of the aaa system. I use this in its simplest form, short cows get sire that adds stature and tall cows get a shortish bull that adds capacity to add width. Other traits all bulls must have is wide rumps and strong udders. I understand your looking for uniformity in your heifers and it's annoying have such extremes
Another thing you mentioned at the end about your heifers variation is some mature later. So they Mayne average heifers that become better producers with age.
Think we all get then variables you mentioned. There's the rule of thumb and then there's always those exceptions to the rule in breeding 😂
Haha I like that, good line 👌
can you make some bales of wrapped silage or hay with the extra grass? Pretty sure you've thought of this already but just curious what goes into that decision.
Not at this time of the year, I couldn’t get it dry enough to bale 👍
I'd look up the mother's of the light heifers, and the dates of birth and the sires and see what patterns emerge
I think you genomic tested those heifers, I would be checking those results of the empties to see if any had genetics potential to carry over, but wouldn't keep them if low for fertility.
Haven’t got any genomics done as of yet but from next season all dna sample include genomics which will be good 👍
👍
Hi new bigger cowshed
You should send those 5 heifers up to mervs with next years heifers and give them a second go
Yeah I’m thinking about it, not worth much at the works so probably a good idea
I never worried about size, I just hated getting those scungy poor doers you would get a few of every year
Those seemed to be the ones that struggled
Those ones seemed to be later in AB and not looked after properly by there mothers early on with a bit of bad weather around
Yeah I agree, if they are good condition then I’m not too worried 👍
Andrew ex farmer your question you only have to look at your kids same sire and dam but different outcomes dont worry about all being the same in your line of heifers
Haha that’s true! Never though of it like that but it makes sense 👍
Please don't whack your heifers.
Carry them over and milk them from next season? ( the better ones)
Good idea 👍
Iam surch about Job❤️
Sir halo iam also know all kind of Animals breeds am doctor and sergon
Do you milk twice a day?
no just Once a day
Genetics feed starch
👍
In shed feed system will solve your shed issues
Haha cheaper to mix it myself 😉
Are there no export for jersey heifers in nz.
Seems a shame to kill an empty heifer who may not actually be matured enough to carry a calf at time of insemination
Don’t think so, but I’m not sure
Worth finding out I sold 1 jersey yearling here I'm aus to export and got 1100
What causes the heifers size difference?
Genetics
Milk allowance as calf & how long
Feeding up to breeding/calving
Yep probably agree there, need to feed milk for a bit longer 👍
Genetics. Body condition will give you.an idea of where they are at mor than an average size
Yep I agree 👍
Hi empty cows into steak
What plece teat sealing in heifers?
Just plugging the teats to stop bacteria getting in there 👍
