Described by Bill Gates as what would be one of the three "pillars" of Windows Codename "Longhorn" (which later became Windows Vista), WinFS was a new and ambitious take on organising and manipulating data. In a world that is still without fully-functioning WinFS as it was originally envisioned, take pause for thought as I (try to) explain the basics of this amazing technology that Microsoft dabbled with at various points spanning right back to the early 1990s!
With thanks to TH-cam user "mahzorimipod" for the WinFS promo clip used at the end of the video.

Here is Microsoft's video explaining WinFS (from PDC 2005, also known as the iWish video): th-cam.com/video/UhWCH8ebShY/w-d-xo.html
And here are the blog posts of the WinFS team related to the video and WinFS' four platform value propostitions:

*points at Windows 10*
The folks at reactOS need to implement this.
Would love to see it added to Windows 10, maybe we should give Microsoft feedback about it? ;)
TechWeekly Yes, we should! I'm using 8.1 right now though, so can't just yet.
i attempted to install WinFS to windows 10, kept saying my OS was too old :D oh well, busting out my XP laptop now, trying it on there
*Bill Gates envisioned Longhorn as having 3 pillars*
By 2006, one pillar (WinFS) had collapsed, another (Avalon) was just a stump, a shadow of its former self, and only one pillar (Indigo) remains
Oh bull. Avalon was only not used by the Shell-that is the major difference. Indigo, as you said, remained. Even though "WinFS" was not included with the operating system a surprising number of "WinFS" features made it into Windows Vista.
Avalon is WPF
Gates said that he thinks WinFS will re-emerge at some point? I think he wants the entirety of Longhorn to re-emerge...and I don't think anyone would have an issue if Microsoft suddenly decided "FUCK IT, WE'RE GOING BACK TO LONGHORN".
What a nonsensical comment. "Longhorn" as a concept is (mostly) woefully outdated.
i also have found an attempted linux revival of Longhorn, development was abandoned back in 2011, but i think the dev was able to get LinFS in there in some degree (a play on WinFS if you don't understand)
Smart calendaring is in the new outlook app
I just noticed that some stuff in Holo Lens looks a bit like some of the design in longhorn or is it just me?
Could be part of Windows 10 eh?
I'd like to take a shot at a WinFS video, which also shows how it worked in pre-reset "Longhorn" build, why it was a resource hog, why it was cancelled, and how the cloud now fulfills the WinFS vision. What do you think, MajorSky17/Windows On Windows?
And also how reliance on the cloud alone could lead to privacy concerns, so the need for offline storage (and so a WinFS-like system) remains
Definitely - do it! :D
@@WindowsOnWindows Already did, thanks. Title is "WinFS: Bill Gates' biggest disappointment - Emir's Balik Tanaw / In Hindsight". Hope you check it out. Can't post links, YT hates me.
where do you download your ISOs for OSs? is it winworldpc?
Guess winfs will come as a windows 10 update
When was the last time you could open disk management and convent a volume to FAT32
Josh Mar last I tried, never, tho for that one beta that was released for XP and vista, it didn't have to convert the volume at all
My point is you can't convert a volume to a different format, you have to format the volume.
Josh Mar and my point is that from the beta's of it the conversion isn't even necessary
Can you download that shit somewhere ?
This is a link to download WinFS beta 1: www.4shared.com/file/7yEedvuz/en_winfs_beta1_refresh.html
ok
thanks
It could be interesting if winfs did work on windows 10
I needed to download that and apply it to build 4074! (or just install 4093!)
+Tech User19 i wil give it a try too ( but build 4093 is acting like crap so i go with 4074 )
3rd... ehh why am I doing this?

So kinda like how ipods save pics n shit with dates

Nothing more than a rip-off of information from Wikipedia. And you go as far as to rewrite the examples included there to make them seem as if they are your own.
Ian It's called research.
It's called plagiarism.
If we're talking word-for-word copying with no attempt to change up the information, then yes. But how many ways are there to write/say the same thing?
That is only one definition of plagiarism-another definition would be "the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own." The words might be different but the idea clearly remains (as evidenced by the recognition of the originating source material).
There are other examples that could have been used instead of the most prevalent one.
Wikipedia doesn't have a video so it's not an issue. That's what he's coming to fix
