it was only 3/4ths of the way through that I realized that this was, in fact, a law lesson and subtle poke very clever and as a music-plebian, I also appreciated the little introduction and hope the series continues lol
Marty, why are these corporations legally allowed to not credit original composers? As a classical musician myself, I'm aware of Liszt's piano transcriptions of Beethoven's symphonies, and even though both the original and transcription are public domain, anyone who is anyone would credit Beethoven as the composer and Liszt as the arranger. And if I were allowed to make a piano transcription of my friend's orchestral work, he would be credited as the composer and I as the arranger. What happened that corporations are legally allowed to sidestep this? If it's not illegal, it should be changed. I get that when one composes music for a company the music belongs to the company, but man, they are actually allowed to take off names too? That's awful... (Going back to being a professional musician, i learned almost nothing about copyright law in music school classes... That needs to be a much higher priority for all musicians to learn.)
Composing music for a company does not necessarily entitle them to ownership of the composition. Whether or not that’s the case depends on whatever ownership/licensing agreement is reached between the two parties.
Marty, a sincere thank you to you, and Michael Salvatori of course, for composing the soundtrack to my childhood. Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, and Reach were my generations' Star Wars.
Oh Jesus, why did it take me until now to discover this man has an actual TH-cam channel... Feeling dumb aside and hoping you might read this, i just wanted to thank you for your wonderful work. I wish you a long and joyful life life along with the ability to just focus on whatever makes you happy. Marty, I'm a lifelong fan of yours. I've been a drummer since I was a little boy, and I've tried my hand at composing music and music production. It's a passion that I've always wanted to expand upon and become at least decent at. I would absolutely *kill* for a series about this! I imagine you have a lot to share and teach about the many skills that go into writing music: composition, music theory, instrumentation, etc, and I would love to learn more from you. You are so damned talented, it's inspiring. I don't know if I speak for others, but man. Your music spoke to my soul and helped shape me to want to create. For that, I can't thank you enough.
Thank you for the lesson Marty, it's important to know the difference between a composer and a rights holder. You and Michael are composers for example, and Microsoft is only holder of the rights (albeit 50%). And renditions can be good, take Halo Anniversary as an example, while many people may not like it for the visuals, the sound design is really good! Paul Lipson, Lennie Moore, Tom Salta and Brian Trifon were the ones in charge of putting the music together and orchestrating it with Skywalker Sound (who also designed the sound).

Marty, yours and Michael’s music has always held a special place in my heart. I listen to the halo themes over and over, actually, the whole albums. I really hope they make it right one day. In my book, you will go down as the greatest. Re playing the old games is amazing.. the new games don’t feel the same without your touch. I thank you for everything you did for me as kid, as it just inspired me in some sort of way.
Much of my music is very much inspired by you and Michael Salvatori. In fact, I collaborated with an animator to compose music for a HALO animation and we JUST posted it yesterday. many elements of the piece are straight motifs from YOUR Halo theme, to which we gave credit.
