I specifically tuned the bass on this video around the 251hz range, which is where the lows in my voice are. I also cranked them a few db higher than normal. Why? To see who here has their own bass and subwoofers tuned too high. SO, if you said "Its too bassy!!!" You only exposed that your own sound systems are out of tune.
Well since this time im using headphones, i dont hear a difference :)
when did you do these tech talks live? I watched them before, but I stopped for a while since it was way too late 4-5:00 AM my time. So are they still at the same time and which day are they.
That alesis mixer/eq is really good for the price, and the phantom power is 48V, whereas berhinger shit costs the same and doesn't compare!
Im wearing over ear sennheisers and it sounds a little to bassy
look jay, even on a 800€ monitoring system in a audio treated room, the voice is a little too bassy :) that mic is better suited for female voices, but -3db on the bass knob should do you well.. if you want to step up your audio quality even more, put a nice de-esser, a soft compressor and a limiter on the input while your recording (via software), so you'll have a nice and consistent audio track.. or if you want more of that "warm radio announcer voice" you can try a multiband compressor (most of them already have a radio voice preset)
Watching this in 2019... Jay looks so young!
Same
Hope I can find some of this stuff in 2020
hahaha watching in 2021 LOL
Great tip on the clapping. That makes watching the video worth it for me. Thanks.
thats what the clappers in movies are for. clapping your hands accomplishes the same thing though.
Oh yeah never thought of that.
You can also get one of those dog training clickers and save your hands. They're about $2 at Petco!
Thank you so much! I've been struggling with the noise floor on my Alesis Multimix 8USBFX for months. I watched this and was immediately dismissive because the product was another Alesis mixer - but kept watching because I know you have high quality audio. Turns out, all I needed to do was lower the gain in Windows.
"Røde" was started by 2 swedish ppl, thats why theres the "Ø"
Im from denmark and swedish is pretty close to danish. And "Røde" means "Red". So that might be why some pronounce its red
Wow! That mixer blew me away! I love the warm tones and the bass in ur voice, and the ability to adjust.
It does sound kinda like listening to radio at 7:35.
I think it sounds better when you remove some of the bass a bit later on.
Edit: at 8:35
I thought it was just my subwoofer, glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way.
I used this exact same mixer for my music recordings (both TH-cam covers and original songs). It works great for recording music too. I used the same set up -USB plug into my computer using Audacity. It works great for recording vocals, bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and keyboard synthesizer. The only instrument I had trouble with recording was violin. Unfortunately, it got stolen, so I'm looking into new options for my videos and original recordings now.
I'm not correcting, but just explaining:
'Røde' is Norwegian and translates to 'Red' as in the color, therefore some people simply say 'Red'
*angry comment*
Ja mæn røde kjæm frå Australia
Thank you. This video *was* really helpful.
Also, The Røde was (according to Wikipedia) originally unofficially called the Rodent-1, and later named the Rode NT-1, but he added in the ø because of his Scandinavian heritage. So, yes, it's pronounced like "road".
Again, thanks.
Great video.
BNNOOO
Thank you for this I know its several years old, but I literally just got mine in...learning the best set ups, but you put me at ease listening to this
I made my desk arm from a lamp for 10 bucks :D And it's way stable than standart desk arms.
i just bought an e835, making me feel really confident about my decision over the sm58
Røde is actually Danish. And does mean "red" :)
*Angry Comment*
Yes that is correct - from another Dane, however the company is Australian;
"Welcome to RØDE Microphones - a uniquely Australian owned and operated audio company. Our home is in beautiful Sydney, just 20km west of Sydney's down town area and right near the home of the Sydney 2000 Olympics."
Thomas Jensen it is actually genious that they pronounce it as rode in English themselves instead of trying to get native English speakers to pronounce the Ø right 😂
Torben, I think the founder had some sort of connection to Denmark though. He was born there? Or lived there? I can't remember.
its acurly norwigan too, abd means the same as he said
Great video! There are many videos I didn't watch until the end or even stopped them at the very beginning because the audio quality was terrible. I highly appreciate people like you who invest in good audio equipment (and have a relaxing voice). Your videos are very easy to listen to. Keep up the good work!
haha he says XLR like "eggs-ell-are" great video tho
About the boom arm. Get the RODE PSA1. I have it for my blues microphones bluebirds and I love it. So smooth and really helps my gaming commentaries.
i think the audio was better with the smartlav, that's just my opinion. it's possible to plug the smartlav into the mic jack on your computer and just capture it with audacity correct?
The pinout on the 3.5mm jack for the Smartlav is specific to the smartphone layout (3 pin style) If there is some sort of adapter, then it may work
***** i think there's 3 pins like that because the port on the iphone is for a mic as well as headphones. 1 pin is for mic, 1 pin for left audio and 1 pin for right audio. i'm just guessing though, only way to find out is if you could try for us to just plug it into a mic or line-in port on your computer and see if audacity picks up audio from it.
Ubu the Tech Guru It doesnt work on the PC, camera or Zoom. I tried that a long time ago, I should have been more clear in my first comment. The pin locations on the 3.5mm are in fact very different than standard mic.
***** Jay, there's actually an attachment available for the tip of your Rode Lav. that costs about 20 dollars to XLR/ 1/4 / 1/8 / and Micon.
***** Here is the adapter
www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-5MM-Female-4pin-TO-2x3-5MM-Male-Stereo-3pin-CONVERTER-for-microphone-and-audio-/151340263184?_trksid=p2054897.l4275
For use with the smartlav you would not need to use the green connector. Just connect the red connector to the microphone in jack on your computer.
I got my Behringer Eurorack UB802 off newegg for about $30 a few years back. It also includes a mid setting if anyone's looking for an even cheaper mixing board.
Could we get an 2016 update? great vid btw
It's a dynamic mic which means direct USB is not going to give you any decent levels without tons of noise. An inexpensive pre-amp (ART makes some) then 1/4-inch to 1/8-inch adapter direct to the computer would be a better solution than straight USB. That Alesis Mix4 though is my travel mixer and it worked great. Recently decided to go with a multi-track solution (4 separate channels) via a Personus 44VSL audio interface direct to Studio One DAW
Perfect timing I was looking to upgrade my audio input and have been a sub of yours for awhile and saw this video the very day I was looking to order the equipment. I was going to go with a Blue Yeti but went with this exact setup that you recommended. I order the equipment on Thursday and had everything at my house on Saturday. I will say that the audio quality is AMAZING! Great video and as always another great recommendation. BTW my VoiceAttack program now recognizes more of my commands as result also. Thanks Jay!
The bass is too damn high!!! its just going to make it very tiring to listen to your voice especially in longer videos, its not as bad as if it was very high pitch because then it would just be painful but this is just too far to the other extreme, much preferable to have the tone set to a natural level imo.
Nope, your subwoofer is too damn high. My bass HZ is cut, and enhanced around 251hz. Perhaps turn down your own bass.
nope, I have my subwoofer turned right down actually (so as not to annoy the neighbors) and could do with being turned up really and I have my audio settings at the default flat requency response, no extra bass being added in anywhere, anything else I listen to sounds perfectly natural to me except for the part of this video where you use the new audio setup, you are going to say to me that professionally produced movies, tv shows, music and games have their audio setup wrong and only you have it set up correctly?
megaspeed2v2 I tested the audio on 4 systems, as well as my 7.1 surround with 12" sub, not sure what to tell ya.
***** Indeed jay. I also have a flat mix of the frequencies and the subwoofer is +0 db. As a musician i think the bass needs a few db lower. Nice audio though, but i liked the RODE sooo much more.
***** Sound quality is good on mobile (Moto G lte 4G).
4 years but that only means too me that time doesn’t really change how good a given product can make you sound. Sold !
I personally think that the way you have your mixer set has to much bass
Perhaps, BUT, the fact that its adjustable, is the best part!
***** Indeed the adjustable part is amazing! But the bass is really really heavy in this video. I think a more natural and clear voice would be easier to hear for longer periods, like in your pod casts.
If you're using a mixer, you don't need a USB model. You can pipe the stereo output into the 3.5mm line input, NOT the mic input. Line Inputs are inherently very clean because they don't go through your cheap preamp in the mic input.
The USB mixer you recommended is discontinued and the newer model is $99. In my experience the 4-channel or 6-channel Alto mixer is only $49 and $69. It doesn't have the problem of excessive volume levels.
The Behringer Xm8500 dynamic mic is only $20 and sounds superb. You can also find lapel mics for $12 on Amazon that are just as good and they can even be found for $3.50 on Aliexpress.
eggs el are microphone
hey there
I have the Multimix4. It worked great at first, but then after about a year or so, it developed this terrible hiss that refused to go away. Then as time went on, the hissing got louder and louder until it was virtually unusable since the hissing itself couldn't be completely removed in post without greatly reducing the quality of the recording.
Upon a quick youtube and google search, it seems to be a common problem among the entire Alesis Multimix line, particularly due to their use of faulty capacitors. Unless you're good with electronics, my advice is if you're gonna get it is to get it with a good 2-3 year warranty, or just forgo it altogether and buy a proper audio interface instead.
If you really need a starter usb mixer at this price point, try going with the Behringer Xenyx as they seem to have a better track record, not to mention the q802 has more features than the multimix4 for about the same price (or even cheaper depending on where you look).
2019 anyone?
I bought same Alesis mixer. Awesome rig, I love it!
I am actually looking at buying one of these. Any advice?
Wow
SUCH FIRST!

MANY UPVOTES
Much audio such TH-cam
This is a great video. Should be a must watch for anyone looking to start or improve a TH-cam channel. Now if we can get people to start using windscreens on mics when they shoot outside...
its pronounced red,now u have to reply to me MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Another dream crushed:/
NO I STILL HAVE HOOOOOOPPEEEEE
Its røde or röde not red. Lol i have ø i my main language
LuminaryChief56HD !!!!!!!!!! ANGRY COMMENT!
***** Hi Jay. sorry to comment on the mic but here is the explanation.
Peter Freedman the fouder put in the ‘Ø’ character as a salute to his Scandinavian heritage.
They do pronounce it Rode,
But in fx. Danish røde translates to red.
Keep up the great work :)
As someone who uses the Rode PSA1 Boom, I have had no issues with it what so ever!
i dont like the radio tune
Just ordered this set up you recommended. Really excited. Thanks for the tip and look out for my channel coming soon...
I dont like your voice with bass...
Dude, this is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for all day. Thanks so much!
I think it sounds great! Sounds as good as any radio announcer I've ever heard before.
I really don't know anything about audio so I personally dig vids like this, nice info.
Bit late to the party, but about that background noise:
With analogue cabling (such as XLR or 3.5mm), keep your power cables a minimum of 6" away from your audio cables when running parallel to them. A fair amount of noise can be induced (wirelessly) between a power cable and an analogue audio cable. Cross perpendicularly as infrequently as possible, and maintain at least 6" of a gap between the two cables when not crossing (12"+ is ideal).
That mixes sounds like a great device, I will definitely check that out :) Thank you for the tip!
Awesome video, love the mic setup. Currently getting my computer setup so I can start streaming, I love your setup as well. Any tips would be welcome.
That setup sounds absolutely fantastic, but that noise floor has me seriously worried. That's subject to vary by unit, so if somebody got one that's slightly higher, being that you're at 7/100 Windows input volume right now, they may not be able to turn it down low enough to conceal it. Possibly worth the risk at this price and with Amazon's amazing return policy, but still, it has me worried. I've recently been looking into the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, mostly as a headphone amp but also to open the option in the future of using an XLR microphone. I will say though, that it doesn't have the settings for the amount of bass or treble like that mixer does, it's strictly an audio interface. With the price of that mic, I may end up needing a setup for this sooner than expected! That's crazy! Just wonder if there's anything better for not a marginal increase in cost.
You've just earned yourself a new subscriber. Great video. Thank you.
My favorite: Nady SCM-800 condenser mic ($35-$50) w/ shockmount, Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD USB Audio interface ($60) and Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer ($50). For studio reference headphones, the Samson SR850 phones have an epic frequency response and are only $32. It allows full stereo mixing, 192Khz 24Bit sampling and sounds sublime.
Jay i think the "current noise" is because you need to intergrate a ground loop isolator in your setup. This should get rid of the buzzing noise and its worth it because you can pick then up for a couple bucks
i like how jay just typed in desk boom into amazon and linked it
Thank you so much, ive been trying to channel out RODE from my possible microphone list, becuase ive always thought they were ultra expensive. but i have found absolutely no success with any other brand (even just plain audio recorders) but this i will definitely add this to my birthday list
Exactly what info I was looking for!
Thanks Jay.
If you want to get decent sound quality for a cheap price a good all in one mic is the "Blue Snowball", its USB and only costs £50 or something like $70 - $80 in the US, but yeah its a good mic, all you need is a pop filter to go with it.
quite informative jayz. i know a lot about audio but the examples were good. eq is a really nice addition to the setup too when it comes to those bad low frequencies. cheers
You may find that the high noise floor is due to a driver issue. My XENYX 302USB had a terrible hiss going on until I got the driver sorted out, then the noise was completely eliminated. You've probably already tried it but just in case you haven't I thought i'd mention it.
really awsome how you help the community! Keep it up Jay
I'm blown away by the quality of the mic your wife gave you. Another amazing video Jay
If you are talking Xlr i would recommend the MXL 770 or 990 , both priced under 100 USD. I believe that it has better vocals than Jay's Sennheiser E835, but requires phantom power.
Just found this channel through Jerry's channel, awesome stuff so far, loving tech talk, Skunkworks is beautiful, and this video just tops it off. I've recently been looking for a better mic set up (my headset has a garbage mic, all the volumes turned up and my voice is still just a whisper to people) was looking at the at2020 and this mixer might be added to that purchase too, looks (or is that sounds?) amazing and versatile, and best of all CHEAP!
It really sounds like a radio station grade mixer, I'm not entirely familiar with the equipment that professional radio stations use but I listen in my car to a lot of talk radio and the sound signature sounds remarkably similar. I can already imagine the nerdiest talk radio station ever with JayzTwoCents and Barnacules at the helm...
MIND FREEKING BLOWN! great mixer!
The noise floor is high because you're using a dynamic mic in a studio environment without a cloud lifter.
But you should think about getting a condenser mic if the noise floor is an issue.
Not bad! May have to invest in a similar setup
Amazing review. I don't need a mic for any reasons in particular but I feel like I want one now :)
I don't know how it's quality compares but behringer has a similarly priced and similarly featured mixer that also integrates a compressor on its mic channel. Well I will know soon enough once I get my desk set up because I bought one to drive a condenser mic that I'll be using when I launch my channel soon. :). Thanks for the pointers.
What I'd recommend is, for a new TH-camr starting off, get a cheap USB mic like the Blue Snowball since it gives good quality audio for what us required for TH-cam. If you want better quality, upgrade to something like Jay has, maybe get a cheaper mic than this one but use a similar set up, (XLR mic into a mixer/preamp/phantom power etc) and this can if much more useful than using all of the EQ settings in built into the PC - as Jay said...
Thanks for the info Jay, i picked up the smartlav+ and an AT2020 with a mackie mixer. Good stuff and the clapping is a great tip as well.
Alesis is awesome! We use a presonus audiobox USB on our channel, was really cheap and works well. Nice video!
Wow, I was just looking into this kind of stuff, thanks!
The thing with my 600D (t3i) is that the preamp hardware/firmware is that it's so crappy it puts a very prominent hiss behind your audio. The best way to fix this is putting a mic into a H1 (a cheaper alternative to the H4n) and it sounds great!
I have the AT2020 XLR Model passed to a phantom then outputing to USB and the quality seems OK to me but could be better. That is on my Main channel without the 2 at the end. The clap to sync though is something I never thought of. That I will be using now in my Vlogs and Reviews. Thank you.
Jay...Excellent Video!!!! Real true value for my time...I have been looking for this particular info for a while now...the bass might have been al little heavy but sooooo What...Rock ON!!!!!!!!
Very nice! For audio recording, if you have a tripod, I'd also suggest the Tascam DR-05. I've had it for about a month and a half now, and I love it. Quite the fantastic recorder given its price point of under $100.
I actually like the Heil PL2T boom. You have to have plenty of patience while waiting to find a new one on Ebay for 1/2 price. I also like the HEil short boom SB-2. Granted, there are a lot of other boom products out there for less money but to each his own.
If you use Ableton for sound recording, you can mediate clipping by using a compressor, limiter or both in tandem. Great video though!
I'm impressed with this video and your ability to experiment and think outside the box. Sure, it's always easy to get the best of whatever you want if you have the $$$$ but you figured out a solution on a budget. That's impressive! The video is 2+ years old. If I were to setup a system like this today, would I use the same equipment? If not, which models should I choose? Which desk mount microphone boom arms are a good choice today? And lastly, can I monitor my audio directly using headphones without hearing any delays?
Makes me wanna start a podcast now! Hmm I might actually do that!
Nice video! Another great mic for a great price is the AT2005, which has USB and XLR, so you can grow with it.
the Alesis Multimix is now going for 144 on amazon.
Great advice. Definitely will be looking into these solutions. Awesome vid as always.
I've had great results using a Tascam DR-05 recorder with its integrated microphones and occasionally supplementing with a Sony ECM-CS10 lav mic when I'll be moving around. I can also feed the monitoring output from the recorder into the microphone jack on my Creative X-Fi Go! Pro when I need a live audio stream, using the integrated audio works just as well, but I have the X-Fi, so might as well use it. Sorry, no samples, my customers wouldn't be very happy if I gave away what they paid me to make for free on TH-cam.
Oh, and in my arrogant and correct opinion, the audio quality was much better with the RODE smart lav than it was with the desktop setup.
Yeah it's really late i know but hey Jayz, your mic is clipping because it's a dynamic mic on a mixer, so you have way too much power
Discovered this channel only a short while ago and it's turning out to one of my favourites. Well done Jay.
As for the RODE did you happen to put it in your cart? Because every time I put something in my Amazon cart the price goes up! :-)
I like these kind of Videos.
It sounds really great and "voluminous" on a Moto G (speakers) but really radio announcer-bassy on my DT 770 Pro (250 Ohm)
+JayzTwoCents you can get the Behringer USB mixer for $50 or so. I got mine on sale at Guitar Center and can use any XLR mic for podcasts
I believe the reason some people pronounce "røde" "red" is because "røde" is the word, or at least is close to the word, that means "red" in a few languages. The "ø" sounds more like "oh," though, so "road" makes more sense for native English speakers, especially since the name of the company isn't actually "Red." Feel free to write me that angry comment. :D
I don't know, I personally like the Shure SM-58. It can handle aggresive screaming (as I am a metal vocalist) very well. It is a very high quality dynamic mic for $100. I run mine to a Yamaha interface (extremely great quality for $200. I could plug my guitar straight in as well) and I don't get static noise when turning up the levels and gain.
I noticed when I try using a crossover/mixer in my studio I was also getting a hiss. In order to fix that I used my PC based oscilloscope ( Virtual Analyzer) which is wonderful for this use or any use, I fed the output of the mixer ( isolated that is ) into the oscope the mic jack with voltage and current dividers due to the low voltage safety threshold of the sound card. I then set it to a bandpass filter in the oscope and tuned it to where only the hiss was getting through to the oscope. I did the same once more with the mic connected with a signal generator sweeping from average human voice frequency, then simply read the frequency of the frequency counter and inspected the waveform. Then just built a simple active crossover ( filter ) similar to the use for my subs, and tuned it to where it blocked out only the background oscillation or hiss, however you want to call it. Then walla his was gone and had isolation.
I've had this mixer for around a year now and I really like it. It's good for one mic but during recording when I use the monitor port I get a 1Khz Whine in the background but it doesn't show up in the recording. Kind of annoying but it's good for the price.
I'm using a AKG P220, a Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer with my Soundblaster Z soundcard and it sounds amazing. It's way more expensive (about 300€) but worth the money
I have a similiar usb mixer/interface setup as alesis and I prefer putting my windows volume to 100% and only use my mixers output levels when I need to adjust the volume. I think its much easier.
The history behind the "Røde" name is confusing since the company is more tied to sweden than Denmark. However in Denmark the word for "red" is "rød" and if used in a sentence like "look at the red car" the word "Røde" would be used. The swedish word for "red" is "röd" which is pronounced the same way(now the way pronounced in the video though).
So its a bit weird that the danish word for "red" is the name of the company even though the company has ties in Sweden, but it still is a explanation for why some people call the company "Red".
I got 835 too and wondered if it might be a good idea to use it for recording. now I am sure. Just need to grab a decent mixer/interface to connect it.
Sounded great on your battlefield streams, I was wondering why you were suddenly using that mic over the yeti.
love your outro music
Thank you Jay! I have a more informed opinion of what to get now :)
Also, if you point your microphone not straight at your mouth, but a bit lower so it can pick up sound from your mouth, neck and chest, it will pick up more of how your voice sounds for people when you talk to them face to face.
Great Vid. Informative and much appreciated. Sounded quite nice to me, not bassy at all, but then audio is so subjective.
damn Jay, I've once again found one of your older vids incredibly helpful!
I have a boom and a BM 800 on the way to try and clean up my sound over TeamSpeak, and while I was thinking of ordering a phantom power adapter, this particular unit might be better suited to me :-)
the only thing that worries me about a usb or external soundcard though, is the thought of losing the acoustic echo cancelation from my integrated Realtek HD.
"ø" is a danish letter, and it its pronounced like "hurt" if you take out the "h" and the "t" or "bird", if you take out the "b" and the "d" of the pronunciation.
I'd go with a tad bit less lows/bass on the mic, but that's my preference, to make it less boomish.
You guys ever wanna see a difference in audio just see my old videos compared to my new ones.
Yes Blue Yeti's make great Mic's!
